HD in 720p is 1280x720. This TV supports more than that. The intelligent thing to do would be to not use the extra pixels and just show it in full 1280x720. If they are scaling the 720p to 768, then, yes, I agree with you. I guess I'd be hoping that they were not dumb enough to do that...

My walks through the electronics sections at various retailers lets me know that is exactly what is typically used and my inspection of the manual does not lead me to another conclusion.

I would not buy "Toshba" (Japanese pronunciation) anything. Also see previous comments about their out-sourced quality.

Yea, they sold technology for the Russians to build submarine propellers that were so quiet that the US's matrix of listening devices on the bottom of the ocean could no longer follow their every move, or perhaps hear them at all.

How does one get the $395 price? No tax and recycle fee?

First if you are in TX you will pay tax there as well. I live in OH and didn't pay tax from the Philips site? Only in CA do you pay the recycle fee and 11%+tax. I just bought the 50" Plasma HDTV w/ ATSC + NTSC tuner for $999 from them 3 weeks ago + free shipping. Bought the wall mount from Buy.com for $34 no tax + free shipping and the full theater cable kit from there as well for $25 including HDMI and DVI cables (8 total actually) Not a dead pixel or a scratch on the TV. You can buy extended warranties from lots of companies as well. Even bought a home theater this week to go with it from Philips. Didn't need it but for $99 (who cares?) Now will it last? Don't know. At 136LBS its only going up on the wall once, then it becomes a piece of crap art if it craps out.

Actually, now, anything in the US must have an ATSC tuner. There is some argument that there are exceptions: such as if it does not have an NTSC tuner, then it doesn't have to have an ATSC tuner either (i.e. it can just be a monitor with NO tuner).

I

sorry, I should have been more specific... the person I was replying to was comparing NTSC and HD . He/she was concerned and called the company where a "tech" said that it had an NTSC tuner...which satisfied them and they were going to buy it.... An NTSC tuner however is NOT HD, if that's what they wanted that's not what they're going to get.

Ah, they just picked up my cracked 32" today... I splurged on a Samsung. Half the trouble was getting the wife to take to the new TV idea in the first place. After that, the upsell was easy...

The worst part about it is that SCTV isn't on the air anymore. Funniest thing on TV!

Check out the wiki link above; SCTV had an ensemble of funny Canucks, back in the day. If you don't get the humor, sorry we can't help you...

Jose you should get one.

I got the 32" in the bedroom, hanging on the wall. It also has both a built in ATSC and QAM tuner. Moreover, native 720p.

Then you sir need to get your eyes checked out. I have a tv literally the size of a piece of standard printer paper, and I can read everything absolutely fine. And I can even read things like the subtitles in Lord of the Rings just fine, which is even smaller. Don't lie to these innocent people like that. My opinion to that person, just go out to a best buy for a bit, and find a tv of the same size, and make the decision yourself, because, obviously, opinions, and vision abilities, vary from person to person.

I believe he was referencing the text, or possibly more specifically, the text via web ON THE Wii, Not A Flippin Movie. Which with my better than 20/20 vision on my 20inch tv, sucks terribly. Also, the tv he was using was probably fullscreen aspect ratio with 640x480 resolution where as this is wide at 1366x768. Even if I'm wrong on this one you should ponder everything before you tell someone they have bad vision.

Why did you hang it on the wall? The ceiling would have been better to minimized neck cramp...when in bed.

The same thing just happened to my television. In addition to the red component video input, the red audio input on the component connection also stopped working.

Was using this as a combo tv/dvd in a guest bedroom and now using as a computer monitor. Works great for my purposes, isn't going to supplant my 42" plasma as my primary display but does it's job well.
