Ordered three of these. We're into e-books and the two major free download (library) sites say the their downloads won't work on I Pods. For the money, these are great. I have two of the 512 mb and they have been going strong for a year.

No, you do not have to subscribe to any service to use it. You will need a computer, however, to move the music files onto the player.

Just because I dig quality means I'm brainwashed? What part of "I owned a non-Apple MP3 player and it sucked" portion of my initial post didn't you get? Sirloin is better tahn T-Bone but it must be the brainwashing, right?

Listen, my friend: the fact that you can buy an MP3 player for less than a hundred dollars is a testamnet to what Apple has accomplished. Cheap, substandard knock-offs are the result of the fact that 1 of 10 people now own an MP3 player (what's Ipod's market percentage at these days? 75%?) up from around 1 of 1,000, pre-Ipod. Show some respect.

My Ipod is not a status symbol. Most people don't "show off" their Ipods out of the house because you can get mugged for it. Anybody ever get mugged for a Sansa?

And you can drag and drop onto an Ipod (within Itunes - which also happens to be the best MP3 software out there; Apple lossy also being the best sounding format for the file size). And what about video? The only other comparable Video player out there is a Zune: how much does it cost? Oh, same as an Ipod? And you have to use Microsoft proprietary software too? Now who's brainwashed?

Whatever. You go with your Sansa. I'm sure its awesome. I just wonder why anybody could post that without taking poorly-researched cheapshots at Apple? Are we that bitter? Or just bored?

You dig quality and are listening to MP3 files? Oh, I guess you are talking about build quality. Let's talk speakers and amplifiers if you want to discuss quality.

Props to Apple for getting competitors into the game to offer inexpensive players that compete for basic music playing.

The fact that you want to watch video on a tiny screen says a lot about your techcentric life. Luck to your eyes (and eardrums) over time.

I listen to the radio every day also. Imagine that! Guess what, Windows XP Pro on a rig that could blow the translucent doors off of your Mac.

Hey folks, there's a REASON the iPod has like 80% marketshare in this space ... if you can't figure it out from the comments, you probably should not be buying one.

PS. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you buy this as a gift for someone who told you they wanted an iPod. This ain't no iPod, nuff said.

Actually, indigo is a blue-violet color. It should resemble the blueish glow of a Timex Indiglo watch.

2. My friend believes her IPod can only use music bought from I Tunes so she could not add any of my MP3 files. Is this true?

Yes she can. If they're on a music CD, she puts it in the drive and clicks "Import" (location on the window varies from version to version of iTunes.) Don't forget to change the option to rip music as MP3's.

If the music is already in MP3 format (memory stick, CD, DVD, whatever), she drags and drops them onto iTunes "Library" window (she'll know what this is) and iTunes will add them to the library.

BUT

Make sure she sets "Copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" - it's in the preferences somewhere. If you forget, iTunes will assume the CD/Mem Stick/whatever will always be available and won't make a copy for itself.

Enjoy

Sandisk web site says it supports audible but not on mp3's or wma. I bought a refurb (rox0rz!) 512 sandisk off woot and it does resume where you powered down. I don't know why sandisk decided not to support audible on this mp3 player.

Also, should I expect a full 17 hours of battery life out of one AAA battery, or is that just hype?

It should read both with no problem

cnet review on E140 indicated that they got 17.6 hours.

Thanks for the newegg tip, I've shopped there before. but didnt think to look for SD cards. the brand I got was Kingston from zipzoomfly anywho. I hardly see it as being ripped off cuz it's still cheaper than buying at retail, but thanks for the headsup.

I think I answered my own question. I am posting what I found in case someone else had the same question.

I’ve been in the market for an MP3 player to play audiobooks in my car. Specifically, I intend to download books from my local library.

The library books are in WMA format and have (here’s the catch) a DRM [Digital Rights Management] file. In other words, I can electronically “borrow” the book but not keep it. The book file gets downloaded with a license that expires after a month.

The SanDisk Sansa e200 series works seems to handle this format well, but that’s NOT the case for the Sansa e140. From the SanDisk web site:
http://www.sandisk.com/Products/Default.aspx?CatID=1073
• Plays MP3, WMA (does NOT play secure WMA content), Audible audio file formats. Does NOT support audio books in WMA and MP3

I’m ready to Woot! an MP3. l just need this one feature, though. Maybe next MP3 Woot!?

I use Juice to schedule podcast downloads, then fire a batch file that clears the contents of a SD card, then moves the contents of the podcast directory to the SD card. When I grab my wallet, keys and Sansa every morning, I swap the SD cards (between my computers card reader and my Sansa), and I have a fresh batch of Marketplace, Marketplace Morning Report, Fresh Air, Dave Ramsey, etc. for my new day. I cancelled my XM service because I stopped listening to it.

Since you are a fellow podcast addict, I was wondering how you overcome the "turn-the-power-off-and-the-podcast-starts-over" issue. btw, I use Juice in Ubuntu (still called ipodder ;)

If this one had the ability to record FM radio, I might have bought it. The voice recorder would have been nice as well, but it doesn't have that, either. For just a little more, I can get that feature in another brand.

Damn right this is no iPod. It actually offers a lot more value, and you don't have to pay for all that Apple advertising. Oh, and the real reason for iPod's market share is the success Jobs and his Apple corporate underlings have had in brainwashing all the people who don't really understand what they are buying.

Just scored a 2GB SD card from NewEgg for $19 to my door. Should work nicely with this Woot.

Additionally, the only thing I'm concerned about is a few of the comments addressing the cheesiness of the armband. I Woot'd this player earlier today and am curious now if there are any suitable aftermarket armbands.

I'd like to add that -- a very useful feature is that it has an f.m. tuner built in, which is what I'm buying it for, so I can take it to the gym.
Also, I won't have to worry about it getting destroyed if I try to take it in the pool, or if I jog with it.

I bought 3 about an hour ago before is started bouncing. my father wanted to give one away and possibly keep one and I know I can make a profit with at least one if not 2 in case he doesn't like it. I can just put it on the company bulletin board in outlook and make a pretty good profit. Not bad price in my opinion. My last sandisk mp3player/voice recorder was refurb (rox0rz!) and seems to do weird things but I may just not know how to use it correctly, otherwise it works fine, I have had a copy files end up not being playable even on the computer with various players. Anyway thats a few more gone so should be sold out pretty soon, now the hunt is on for the lowest price of SD cards, I imagine newegg is going to be my best bet on that if anyone knows of super cheap crackhead prices a link would be appreciated, although I did not go through all of the posts. Woot on!!

In for one. This is a deceptively great player. I have two of the 512kb models, one is three years old and still works fine. I'll give these to my kids. I've been collecting 2gb cards for 5 to 10 bucks AR and am up to about 10, so 20 gigs of memory to swap among the players. You can get about 25 CDs on a card. The SD slot, SRS Wow, ability to play DRM audiobooks, good sound, file management (uses ID tags by artist, album etc.), good display, radio and real volume wheel make this a no brainer. Sandisk were boneheads to drop the SD slot in later models.

Why is the ipod considered the ultimate yardstick of all mp3 players? They have good points, but some serious disadvantages too. What is it about Apple fanboys always having to say it is not an ipod causing some sort of endless boring debate that has been done a million times before? There is room for ipods and other mp3 players as well.

I agree that there is room for other mp3 players, but the iPod is just more popular.. I was torn between the zune and the iPod.. but idk, I just liked the iPod better, plus we already have a bunch of ipod crap like that radio thing.. and I love my podcasts.
