A GREAT charity is Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)
a group of doctors that goes all over the world (even in the worst war torn regions)
to provide much needed medical care to people.

They are also on the front lines of reporting government atrocities/genocides/etc.
Linked below is the donation site.

Please consider them if you have some loose change!
Thanks!

Had something good in the supermarket today. If you buy pre packaged bag of fixings for $7 the store would donate that bag, with a turkey to charity. They had the charity on the bag and the receipt listed it as a charitable donation. It runs till New Years Day.
Only work I had to do was walk the bag with the paid sticker back to the donation box.

Our store had a bag like that for $5, but I didn't see anything about a turkey anywhere on it.

Want to do something good for a local shelter, but would rather donate goods than cash?

For $16.34, you can purchase these needed items:

144 individually wrapped toothbrushes = $9.49/free shipping

144 combs = $6.85/free shipping

Salvation Army, Salvation Army
Put a nickel in the drum
save another drunken bum
Salvation Army, Salvation Army
put a nickel in the drum
and you'll be saved

(politically incorrect song learned in girl scout day camp in the 60's)

Hubby was mad at the Red Cross when they misappropriated funds after 9/11 and Katrina.
He read the financial reports for the Salvation Army and was happy with them.

So folks, you know where the find that drum!

It's amazing how many guys that were in WWII would have nothing to do with the Red Cross. My card club was talking about it one evening (all of our dads were in the war) and most of them said their dads absolutely did not like the Red Cross. I've never heard anything bad about the Salvation Army.

talking about the salvation army......

my brother (who was 10 or 11 at the time) picked up the phone to a gentelman saying:
"Hello this is so and so calling from the Army recruitment center. Is C (sister) there?"
Brother: no - can I take a message?
Recruiter: yes - Like I said earlier, I'm calling from your local army recruitment center and was wondering if C would be interested in joining.
Brother: you're wasting your time... she's already part of the salvation army

really?
besides them trying to convert people who are vulnerable and their stated homophobia, they are a great outfit.

I never did like the here is some food now pray with us tactic.

There are Christian charities that don't play that game, but the SA ain't one of them.

I'm put off by the religious part.
They don't blow as much money as the Red Cross.
Don't all the religious charities throw in the religion part?
Yeah, the WWII guys were put off by the Red Cross, I heard it more than once.
My stepfather liked them, they helped him with something, but most guys were mad at them.

there are tons of organizations that do great work in the US. I personally like Habitat for humanity (you can donate to a local chapter) though they are religious they don't try to convert. I also like Southern Poverty Law Center. I haven't researched disaster relief in the US, though.
