Good point.

Hmmm.
"Feature," huh?
You must be either a marketer or a software maker by trade. :-)
I hear that almost every day.
Nah, I work for a hospital to deal with all the "Undocumented Features" that come in medical software. <think bugs>
If it won't matter when I'm 90, it's no big deal.

I have about 2G of tunes on my hard drive, about 1,000 songs: This should hold about half my collection, easily enough tunes to get me through my workouts without having to hear the same songs over and over. And AAA's are cheap to replace.
Only thing I'm wondering about, will this work on a standard USB, if I don't have a USB 2.0 port? Will it just be slower? And if I do need a 2.0 port, how much will one run me?
yes it will work with usb 1.0 it will be slow to transfer songs. you can get a usb 2.0 pci card at newegg.com best place to be looking for computer hardware.

Do I get a swift kick in the ass with these, or does that come later when someone seems me using this?

I hate to badmouth my own kin here, but Macintosh people aren't known for reading all the documentation, ya know? I'm a tri-platform guy, so I can see this kind of problem coming, but there are more than zero people who'd say, "What do you mean, the disc is too small to come back out?!"
My 12" Powerbook spits out the mini CD's too, but I think that it's probably when it tastes windows drivers... It's likely that the CD is not needed. And if it is, copy the contents on a desktop, put it on the mp3 player and load it from there.... It will show up ad a storage device without any software. Or, burn it to a CD (like you would do of you were going to put .M4p iTunes music onto an mp3 player. My guess is that the software is some mickey-mouse drag & drop window that might try and get you to join Napster or some other service. On that sized CD it's probably very small.

It will work fine. This is likely not the fastest. My Sony NW-S705 has a setting to pick between high speed and slow USB, which is handy because I use a PC with USB 1.0 to transfer songs (because of the *&%$(*&^ SonicStage software that needs XP to crawl along) and it's not a huge deal unless you are swapping the whole thing at once. USB devices all work with one another, but at the speed of the slowest device.
If this were a 20GB player, that might be a concern, but at 512mb - you are not likely to change all the songs at once. I had a 20 GB USB 1.0 Drive and survived it. It makes one more selective of what gets transfered.
