Actually, this is a perfectly ribs idea... the only two problems with this machine as I see it is that it's not designed to flip upside down and mount under a cabinet and that the screen is simply too small.

Maybe the rest of you are single or something, but my wife and I have been wanting to build a touchscreen kitchen computer for awhile now... this ALMOST fits the bill.

Latest update for this puppy is from Feb 2005. Nothing new since. Here's what the FAQ is about the upgrade.
============================================

Your new iCEBOX includes the following additional features and enhancements:

Remote Desktop Mode
Your iCEBOX can connect to any other PC in your home that is running Microsoft Windows XP Professional (tm) and through this connection, your iCEBOX can run any application on your PC as if you were sitting in front of the computer. We call this feature "Remote Desktop" because it allows you to use the keyboard, remote, and touchscreen attached to your iCEBOX to remotely control your home computer. With this powerful new feature you can run any application directly from your iCEBOX. You can run Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook, or PowerPoint. You can also run custom software previously available only for PC's such as home control or automation software. The possibilities are endless. .

Audio in Internet and My Kitchen modes
Your iCEBOX now supports playing audio in Internet, My Kitchen, and Remote Desktop modes. Whenever you switch to one of these modes, the iCEBOX leaves the audio source unchanged. We call this feature“Follow-audio” because it allows you to hear audio from the prior mode when in My Kitchen, Internet , or Remote Desktop mode.

Jump directly to any DVD title
We now have the capability to jump to a specific title on a DVD disc by typing a number using a keyboard or remote. You can use this feature to skip unwanted introductions, to jump ahead in a DVD without using the menus, or to skip past looping DVD content. The player will then attempt to jump to the title corresponding to that track number. If the operation is not allowed a message will display. If the track does not exist, a message will display.

Internet mode keyclick volume control
Added the ability to control the volume of the keyboard clicks when in Internet mode (and not using audio from another mode). Can be set to loud (default), soft, or off.

Beyond Smart Appliance Coffee Maker support
Added the ability to control the Beyond Smart Appliance Coffee Maker. Using the My Kitchen mode, you can add a coffee maker, and then get status, brew now, and set weekly brewing schedules.

My Kitchen mode available only for compatible iCEBOX units
In order to use the iCEBOX as a controller for the Beyond Smart Appliances, the iCEBOX must have a SANI module. If your iCEBOX does not have the required hardware, we now disable this mode so that you are not presented with an option that is not available to you.

Support for French and Spanish language
You can now choose which language you want your iCEBOX to use. Spanish, French, and English are included with this software release.

Can change channel order for European television
Televisions sold into European markets support the ability to rearrange the order of the stations to place them into a standard order. The iCEBOX now supports this feature for European models. In addition to the ability to add or remove stations from your list of favorites, you can adjust a station upward or downward in the list. On these units when you press a numeric key to change stations, the number applies to the station order number and not the actual station number.

Oh, and woot doesn't owe us anything, that line is immature and annoying.

If you're looking for a nice computer-related present for non-computer literate grandparents, try http://presto.com/. It's an HP printer that hooks up to a telephone jack. It receives email that is processed through the Presto site, so only "approved users" (list maintained online by whoever buys the thing for someone else) can send email to the printer. It prints email and can handle jpg attachments--it phones in a set times everyday to check for mail from the Presto server. I got one for my 85-year old mother for Christmas and she totally loves it--she gets email now from grandkids, kids, and friends. The few times it has stopped printing, she has been able to get it fixed by calling the people at Presto. There's a $10 monthly fee, but it's well worth it. (I originally saw it reviewed in Circuits in the New York Times.)
