A problem with these is that if the two pairs of headphones plugged in are wildly different, one person may get a lot of volume while the other will get very little. I have a splitter, and when I plug my nice Grado headphones in along with my girlfriend's standard Apple buds, she can't hear a thing when it's perfectly loud for me. It has to do with the resistance of the drivers.

Okay...I don't know why people are complaining about the shipping on woot for this one. It's their thing to always charge for shipping (at that price)...Sure these are small and all, but think about the TV they were selling. Same price on the shipping charge. Sure they most likely lost money on shipping with the TV. Think of this one as....gaining back some of that loss.

But there's still not much (if any) good reason to choose the logitech over the other cheaper ones.
The main difference is just the name, not the functionality.

Really? I just looked at them on eBay (not identical physically, but performs the exact same function) and they were $1 each + $1 shipping. Just search for "3.5mm Audio Splitter."

Also, everyone should note that when using one of these devices with two different types of headphones, it is possible that one set will be much louder than the other set. Since you won't be able to adjust each headphone individually, this could present a problem. However, if your headphones have their own volume controls (some do) then you might be able to compensate for the volume difference.

Well, anything in series you simply accumulate, so you would add up the impedance for each component of the circuit.

So, using the formula for impedance (Z = R + jX), you would need to know specifics about the schematics of the iPod, which I'm guessing will be hard to come by.

P.S. I'm a EE undergrad ;)

Sorry, but these types of splitters almost always wire the headphones in parallel, so you might want to re-think that. I'm sure that you understand the difference.

These are really good if you use Skype or other VOIP services. I like to use the external speakers on my computer to listen to music, etc. When using Skype, I need to use a headset to prevent audio feedback through the microphone. Switching audio outputs is a pain, so I have a splitter that lets output go to the headset and the speakers. During a Skype call, I power off the speakers (or dial down their volume), and just use the headset to listen.

Yes, $29.99 & $39.99 + S&H that starts at $6 is a bit more. I think that the target market is a "bit" lower here - but that was interesting to see.

Comments from an electronics engineer:
(Look at http://www.guymacon.com/ for my qualifications)

Ipods have a fairly high output imedence, which somewhat degrades the sound when using ipod earbuds and this sort of splitter. Split it three or four ways and it gets a lot worse. If you are serious about audio quality, get a booster amplifier.

Some consumer products have a very low output impedence, and this sort of splitter works quite well with them -- even with a four or eight way split. Alas, they usually don't list this in the specifications so you have to guess or experiment.

Headphones often do specify impedence. Higher is better if you are buying headphones to use with this splitter.

This sort of splitter works best with two of the same brand of headphones. mix brands and one may be a lot louder, and the frequency response could be changed.

These are great for splitting a line out signal like between your PC and powered speakers.

They make poor combiners (line or speaker).

These don't change stereo to mono or mono to stereo.

You are very unlikely to damage yur ipod. Somone plugging a mono earphone into a stereo jack shorts out one of the channels, so all products are built to survive that situation.

Battery life will be shorter.
