Greetings Dodgeball 37 players and fans! A signpost pointed you to Dodgeball 37, a settlement in the strange place known as World of Woot… you’re traveling through another dimension, a journey into a wonderous land whose boundaries are that of the imagination blah blah Twilight Zone blah blah blah.

But seriously, around my house it often feels like the Twilight Zone. Objects disappear into another dimension, coat hangers multiply in the closets, and crockery smashes to the floor of its own volition. And while our hearts may be true, the walls? Not so much. All creatures live somewhere, and some of those places are, um, extraordinary. Your assignment:

Depict SurReal Estate.

What makes a place surreal? Is it scale or proportion or juxtaposition? You might show:

  • an interior where all the furniture’s distorted and hanging on the ceiling?
  • a floating subdivision?
  • a furnished beaver lodge?
  • a psychedelic honeycomb?
  • a rendition of an Escher drawing?
  • a boy in a bubble?

Animal or human habit, interior or exterior, rural or urban, mansion or cave, built or natural environment: it’s all available to you. Charm us, delight us and make us think, keeping in mind the usual stipulations about materials and deadlines.

Get it done and make it visible in this thread, using whatever media/file type you like and limiting yourself to 500 pixels. You have until 11:59 pm WST Wednesday, July 18th to post your creation(s). Submit your votes via PM to me within the following 24 hours and results will be posted on Friday, July 20th.

    Here’s one:

I can't wait to see what my fellow choppers create! Have fun, all.

Hah funny. Honestly I had these gnomes left over from an idea I didn't use in the main contest with the helicopter. I couldn't just let them go to waste! They are watching the spray paint lady make clouds. I'm sure each person will have a different interpretation though!

This is great: all of you are doing really fine chops that both respect the theme and expand it... terrific!

Looks good, with the exception of the ship being see through. If you post the original picture of the boat on water I will fix it for you.

    Something neat I found.

I wanted it to look like it was fading in, but you are right, it needed fixing. I increased the contrast of the riverboat so only the stern is transparent, which I hope looks better. I appreciate the comment and the offer of help.

Thanks KT. I hope you agree, now, too.

The tools in Microsoft PictureIt! are not as versatile as GIMP. The variable transparency works sort of like a layer mask with a gradient on it, but there is no mask, and the change is permanent. It does have layers, though, which is very helpful. To preserve the layers on saving, you must save as a 'special' png file.

Heh, my early contest entries were made using PictureIt! v3.0. It was pretty primitive in those days, and I pretty much sucked. Nice entry, sorcerer.

I thought it was a riverboat floating over a sunken city, which wouldnt need fading, but very ribs idea nontheless.

have you tried GIMP Portable and Portable Apps?
All you need is a usb drive and a little time to install it. The programs run completely from the usb thumb drive so even a locked down computer will usually let you run them.

    and great picture.

Thank you so much! It really worked a treat.

Here it is done with GIMP using a layer mask and radial gradient on the water.

this one, I think of like a fantasy world where the boat takes the place of plane travel. i.e. there is a river/ocean in the sky (magically, or through a trick of technology) and the boat is traveling on it.

... but surreal landscape is kind of a neat sub-genre of fantasy art. I don't understand a lot of it, just kind of go, wow that's neat. Salvador Dali is one of the better know surreal artists, I am sure there are lots of others.

I think you should work on the losttrains one and do a deathstar for the moon perhaps, its very nice on its own. I suggest making multiple versions that make fun of people on woot or woot itself or any number of other things. The moons could be a faded face of someone who posts on woot alot. I like those myself, but you should try doing different versions and we can vote for one of them.
