If any (non-iPod Fan-Boys) have any questions concerning this player, I have several of them (actually, I have over 150 different media players... I'm a reviewer), and would be more than happy to answer questions.

That's great, but unfortunately, all those (so-called) options only ad additional cost to an already rather expensive player.

okay i gave in, my 1st woot

so how do these hold up for everyday use at the gym which i'll likely use it for...any reviews?

here's my rundown of previous mp3 players:

dell dj 15gb...no idea where it is, lost it or it was taken lulz

40gb creative zen xtra, spent aobut $190 at the time, good value, but like a brick..too bulky...its collecting dust

currently using a creative zen nano 512mb, got it for $20 from buy.com while ago. serves its purpose, enough music for a workout. small, hangs around your neck

so hopefully i get more use out of this one, just worried about the refurb (rox0rz!), hopefully it holds up

The surface itself should holdup very well, as it is very scratch-resistant (ever somewhat rubberized in texture) though I'm assuming that you'll be purchasing some kind of case.

I do offer you this, hard-drive based DAP units are not really well suited to gym/active use, because of the very nature of the hard-drive itself (a fast moving data platter).

For the gym, you'd be much better off with a flash-based player, as there are no moving parts to wear prematurely.

Microsoft's Zune player does not work with either iTunes or the Windows Media Player music software that comes with a new PC. It requires new Zune software that was just released, which means it doesn't have all the kinks worked out yet.

If you currently use the music software built into Windows or iTunes, you'll have to move your music into the new Zune software to use it with the Zune player.

The Zune also won't work with other players that use Microsoft's PlaysForSure, or the PlaysForSure online music stores, including Napster, Amazon, WalMart, and MTV Urge. It also does not work with Apple's iTunes music store. Any music you currently have that was purchased anywhere online won't work with the Zune.

A new, completely revamped edition of the Zune software will be released 13 Nov 07 along with new Zune firmware, which unlike the iPod, will add a multitude of new/extended features to the player (Yes... even the 1st generations one like those here on WOOT) to bring it the same feature set as the brand new Zune 4/8/80 models.

and Yes... Both the new Zune marketplace and the Firmware will be 100% Free!

well, why are you surprised about a counter intuitive microsoft interface? these are the people who have you press a start button in the OS to stop the machine.

WRT the zune, it looks pretty nice, interface issues aside.

again, for those 'on the fence' about this purchase,

13 Nov 07 Microsoft will make available a completely new Zune Marketplace, and completely new Zune firmware free to all user of 1st generation Zunes that will upgrade the player to all of the features of the 2nd generations players.

So if you're concerned about buying older technology, I hope this sets your mind at ease... MS is in this for the long haul, and actually seems to care about its customers.

WOOT!

I've been a 'gadget guy' for many years now, and some of my freelance wittings caught the eyes of some people in the industry.

I started witting them when I was stationed in Okinawa in the mid 1990's for some Japanese publications, and upon retirement, moved back to the states and continued.

This is really an outstanding deal on a truly great player.

I just ordered the brown Zune... and my question is: how was the packaging on he refurbs? If they send them out in some brown box and not the original packaging, I'm gonna be ticked. But I'm stoked either way, I just returned an 8 gig iPod touch for $315.00 and picked up a 30 gig zune for $80. Besides... the hell If im gonna take an ipod touch down a mountain this winter. I'm glad I went with you on this one Billy Gates.

If I could sell my black refurb (rox0rz!) Zune for $104.99 like I paid I'd buy this brown.

I got a brainstorm.. woot should have them on 2 for tuesday for this price. Then I'd definitely buy two.

No, it doesn't support lyrics (a rather dubious addition IMO)

No it does not have a note pad, though it will have limited text messaging via WiFi after the firmware upgrade.

Yes, the back-light can be set to turn off after a specific time period.

Remember, MS markets the ZUNE as a premier Media Player, and does not intend on it supporting a bunch of features that have little/to nothing to do with audio/video reproduction.

im not knockin the price....its a steal even if it is refurb (rox0rz!)....i just have issues with it....its good to know that they are upgrading it....finally....initially it was a pure headache when i went to intall it.....5 times it took me to get it intallled before i could even begin to upload music....for the price to size ratio its up in the top 5....but it was a real pain in da azz from the beginning....now that it works i use it more for movies than anything else.....great for work when we have downtime at JEEP
