MHMANK - Can you please tell me the difference between the Dyson 07 and the Dyson 14. I have the 07 and love it except for the awkwardness of using the extension hose with the tools. I am getting a little more used to it, but I wondered if the Dyson 14 was any easier to use. Thanks for your answer.

I just got off the phone with Dyson and the rep had me remove two thin, foam seal strips that are under the plate that covers the brushbar. This made no difference when I went to vacuum by the bottom of the sofa. The unit still made the terrible ratcheting sound. Now I'm supposed to take it in for service.

My issue is why does Dyson sell a unit that has this known problem? The rep said taking off the foam seal strips usually fixes the problem. I don't know about you, but I don't like removing parts from a product I just bought.

If you get close to the edge of something like when you vacuum against the bottom of the couch (and I don't mean cramming it under the couch or pushing hard) it starts making a terrible clicking noise. I'm guessing that the brushbar is beating against the plastic housing some how. When the vacuum is put completely upright it will stop making this loud, clicking noise. I'm wondering if this is why the unit might be refurbished. I'm going to call Dyson today and ask them about this because it isn't normal for a vacuum. Is anyone else experiencing this same problem?

Yes, and 'clicking' is a gross understatement! It's a very loud rapid wacking noise.

Mine would do it when pushing the vacuum forward over a thick pile rug that the vacuum seemed to want to suck onto. Definitely sounds like the beater hitting plastic parts. Cleaning the beater seemed to help a little.

Mine did this too. I took the sole plate off and put it back on and it has worked fine since. I think you are hearing a ratcheting sound that is like a cllutch that slips to keep from burning up the belt. I assume you are getting into a thicker pile of carpeting or similar and making it do that. It stops when you stand it upright because the beater bar only runs when the unit is reclined.
I am sure it is a feature to keep from causing damage to the machine or your rugs and carpets.
I am going to look for the foam inserts if mine does this again.
Instructions for removing the sole plate are in the book, near the end I think.

Mne did this 2 times the first time I used it and it also stopped as soon as I put it upright. I had remembered reading something about the noise in the comments from the last Dyson that was on Woot and it didn't concern me, especially since it stopped so quickly. Both times it occured when I switched from one carpet to another. I must have learned to adjust to it because it hasn't happened again.

I have a question though - What are the tool attachments supposed to be like on the vacuum body? Mine came with all of the tools, and all of the tools have the spot they are supposed to sit in. BUT they do not click into position in any way. I can get them to sit in position correctly, but if I so much as bump the machine they all fall off. There seem to be very tiny plastic nubs in these areas, but they kinda look like some clips or something are missing.

Got mine yesterday. Two of the tools snap into place easily. The crevice tool fits into a C shapped clip that was broken, in the bottom of the box. Called the help number and one is being shipped to me. Good service.

Did attempt to post earlier but there was a server error. Here goes another try.
Got our unit yesterday. My wife unpacked it while I was at the office and she was intimidated by its looks and parts. I put it together and discarded the extra fittings that were in the boxes of attachments. They are for other models of the vacuum. A clip to hold the crevice tool was broken but a call to the 800 number took care of that with no problem.
Looked the machine over and found no signs of earlier use or abuse. All parts present but my wife was quick to point out that there was no tool to get under furniture. We have a Roomba for that.
Gave it a try. We have no cats or dogs. We aren't shedding. Our grandkids aren't messy. Couldn't believe how much stuff got picked up in less than half of our living room only three days since the last vacuuming. Very pleased with the purchase.
My only concern is all the comments on the "clicking" problem. Hope that is not an issue to be concerned about.

I did take off the sole plate too and that did not correct the problem for me. I just think you should be able to vacuum up against the edge of your couch or by the kickplate on your cabinets without hearing this terrible ratcheting sound. It is a loud sound too. I just think this model isn't a good choice if you want to have normal clearance in these types of situations. Perhaps the clutch in mine was already having problems and that was making it do the ratcheting thing more. I would guess that the original buyer of this vacuum when it was brand new returned it for this very same reason. Oh well!

Compfan03,

The DC14 is very similar to the DC07. The extension hose works almost the same way and has the same awkwardness. Most of the time when we use the tools we remove the solid metal tube and just use the hose.

This is the first Dyson I have ever owned. There is a reason for the high price tag. This things works better than any other vac I have ever owned. I have only used it a few times, and I am convinced that I will never buy anything else. The stuff it cleaned from the carpets in my house was amazing, It cleand so much dirt not visible to the human eye, its amazing. What a great WOOT!!!

Got mine!
Have cats!

Swept the same floor twice & it looks brand new!

No wonder the carpet looked like carp with all that cat hair in it there was no chance of it having a life of it's own!

Love this sweeper - not sure how we lived without it. Can't wait to vacuum the whole house down from celing to floors!

Been underwhelmed with mine... until I noticed that I've been vacuuming without the brushbar moving at all. I called dyson customer service (no holding BTW.. straight to a person) and she had me "tighten the clutch". Works great now

We vacuumed this morning with our old one... and the dyson picked up so much.

I did end up returning the unit I bought since I could not get the ratcheting noise to stop whenever you came close to the front of the couch or cabinet. The repair guy I talked to at the vacuum shop said the clutches can go in the Dyson's about every two years. I take anything with a grain of salt that I hear, but it kind of bugged me that a vacuum should need things removed (Dyson telling me to take off two gaskets by the brushbar) and you needing to adjust the clutch. Sounds like they need some better quality control. Any other respiffied product I have bought has always been like new. Woot did give a good price so I hope it works well for you.

I agree with everything you said - it's like you wrote my post for me.

I'll just add, the cord it so long, it's so lightweight and I've found using the motorized head is great for the fringe on my rugs. It works on my area rugs just fine and it's so easy to empty. Yippee, I was on the fence about this purchase - Thanks Woot!

I love mine. Got it as an early bday present. I kept bugging my husband to buy me one and he kept telling me to wait and it will be on Woot. Assembly was easy and everything fit into place great. I haven't had a problem with the loud sound that has been discussed, but I did have to fix one thing. The intake that attaches to the bin had slipped a bit and it was running loud. I just slid it back and no problems. I vacuumed with my old Eureka and then went over it again with the Dyson...I was amazed. My Eureka is only 2 years old. Dyson has found a new customer in me.

I also loved the mini turbine. I have winding carpeted stairs and I was able to reach all but the top two stairs with it on the hose. I have berber carpet and I can't change it (rent) but this machine works great on it.

Well I bought a Dyson DC14 and something is wrong with it. It goes one sweep and and beater bar gets hooked up under it and hits the brush under it with a blood chilling noise. Dyson said they know this happens but to use it on bare floor. Well it doesn't happen to pick up any thing on bare floors. They also suggested taking it apart and removing some seals??? Have you ever heard of such good customer service? Anybody want a Dyson DC14 with no guarantee or return?
