Unless your vacuum will sit in the middle of the living room with guests, I wouldn't worry about color... ;)

The Dyson seems built for easy repair if ever needed. The motor turns on and off with good sounds, and the vacuum is very quiet IMHO. The canister easily moves into and out of it's position on the unit. I wish some of the plastic parts were heavier, but I'm super picky on that stuff. I've read that the cleaner and well maintained you keep the parts, the longer this vacuum will last. Seems to me like a sports car that needs a little more work from time to time, but returns a better result in performance than a less-sportish type. But, that's my opinion and I've only owned one a few months. I'd buy it.

cmakanui wrote:I bought one and am really excited and confident about my purchase. Dyson came to my engineering orientation class as a guest speaker. You can tell he really believes in his product and is always trying to improve it.

What a great idea but for those of you with BERER or SHAW carpet you may want to read this review before purchasing it. I don't know if this is true but I imgine it is.

http://www.epinions.com/content_210703978116
I just bought the Dyson DC14 Low Reach to be used on both hardwood floors and my new carpet. The first use on my brand new carpet produced a horrible noise. I called Dyson the very moment I hard the noise and not once did they warn me not to use it on my new wall to wall. They walk me through a procedure of turning the vacuum on it's back and side and after a few tries the vacuum stopped making the noise. The next day I notice a fuzzy spot on my brand new carpet. I contacted both the carpet maker and Dyson. Guess what? You can not use the carpet setting to vacuum your nylon Berber wall to wall carpet without voiding the warranty on the carpet per Dyson but per Shaw you can not use a Dyson at all. Also, I got a nice little form letter from Dyson stating Berber carpet manufacturers consider their carpets to be delicate and instruct for a suction only vacuum to be used on their carpets. Therefore, we cannot take responsibility for the damage to your carpeting. Well if you read the shaw carpet information for taking care of their carpet it says to use a beater brush with good suction but if you call them they do say it voids the warranty on their product as well. So people don't buy this if you have a Berber carpet. Also, for the record I did read the entire manual before I used this product(I always read every product manual before use). It does states use machine on Bare Floor mode on fine or delicate carpets. But it also says on the very same page to use carpet setting so brushbar turns when vacuuming carpets. Wow! Who knew plain nylon wall to wall Berber carpet was so delicate? Not me and both are going back because I am still within my money back guarantee period.

google "beater bar void carpet warranty" and you will see that most carpet mfg recommend a vacuum with a "rotating bristled bar" aka "beater bar" except in the following

"Use a vacuum with a rotating brush or beater bar. Change the bags often and check the beater bars for burs or gouges, so as not to damage the surface of the carpet. Some thick loop pile carpets will fuzz if a rotating brush vacuum is used. In this case we recommend a suction vacuum only."

"TrustMark recommends the use of vacuums with a rotating brush or combination beater/brush bar which agitates the carpet pile and mechanically loosens soil for removal by the vacuum. Note that carpet with thick loop pile construction can be sensitive to brushing or rubbing of the pile surface and might become fuzzy. For these products, TrustMark recommends the use of a suction-only vacuum or a vacuum with an adjustable brush lifted away from the carpet so it does not agitate the pile. A vacuum with a beater/brush bar can be tested in an inconspicuous location and used if no excessive fuzzing occurs."

" For best results, a high suction vacuum cleaner with a beater bar or rotating brush should be used according to the manufacturer's directions. Make sure you adjust the attachment to the proper height for your carpet. For loop pile carpet, avoid attachments with teeth or ridges."

"Vacuum regularly with "beater bar" type vacuum, or use a plastic or wooden carpet rake to restore matted down pile."

But none of the multiple warranties and companies I've contacted mention anything about dysons specifically. Part of what the company I work for does is MFG carpet, no one I've talked to has heard about the "dyson warranty death clause" Most vacuums come with a beater bar these days as their primary method of cleaning.

works great, there is a setting to switch from carpet to lino/tile/hardwood (adjusts the height of the vacuum from the surface of the floor)

These work GREAT on hardwood floors. Use the 'bare floor' setting. Here in SC during this time of year, pollen turns everything YELLOW for about 3 weeks; I use the dyson on my hardwood floors and it gets every bit with no scratches. It's easier to use the dyson than to try and sweep every nook and cranny.

I love mine, with several reservations: We have no carpets, so I use it in cannister mode most of the time. I notice that this collection of attachments doesn't have the bare floor attachment (for normal vacuuming with the wand) so would have to be purchased separately. Also, in cannister mode, the wand which is not weighted well is a little hard on the hands. And if you suddenly pick up a pingpong ball or other cat toy that totally blocks the hose, the whole vacuum assembly comes shooting towards you because of the awesome suction. Otherwise, great. The bagless container is so easy to empty, that you can keep away contacting the dust - stick it in the wastebasket, push a button, and it empties out the bottom. The non-retractable cord is a bummer, but you get used to winding it around your arm and looping it over the top to store.

They work great. I usually use it in cannister mode (using the wand). You will probably want to buy the bare floor attachment for the wand (extra $$). We have lots of long-haired people and pets and it's great for getting up the hair. We had a cheap Shark Roadster before, but the suction decreases as the bag gets full and I had to empty or change the bag several times to go through the whole house. This is much better. I can vac the house with the cheap one and then go through with the Dyson and pick up lots of leftover hair.

Ok, it doesn't SAY that it has the floor attachment, but the picture shows it so I think it does. I'll be somewhat disapointed if it doesn't, especially since the picture shows it... but really, I have more hardwood floors that carpet, and I only use the floor attachment to get under things like cabnet ledges.... I get most of the floors done without it, using the 'bare floor' setting.

I agree that the non-retractible cord can be a nusiance, but at least they give you a good place to wrap it when storing...

I'm thinking of getting the dyson hand-vac to get into small corners and areas where the long wand is akward; but I've never seen one of those on woot. :-(

We have the Dyson ball and really love it. It does a great job on the pet hair. We have some laminate wood flooring so for that we switch to the bare floor setting which just turns off the roller and uses suction only. (But seriously, wouldn't any vacuum do that?) As far as area rugs, your better off using the bare floor setting. Honestly, it doesn't do a great job so every so often we leave the rollers to pick up the pet hair that suction alone doesn't get. So, if you have a lot of carpet, this works wayyyy better than others. And it's bagless, so that's one less accessory you need to buy every few months.

This is a good buy. Especially at the price. Remember that most web reviews were reviewing this at $500, not $250. Consumer Reports rated it as good to exceptional in it's tests, but didn't give it thumbs up because of cost. Now that cost is in line, you should consider that it might be more favorable in Consumer Reports' eyes...

That's true, except that you'd also need to compare it with the reconditioned/refb pricing of the other brands/models as well since they would also be cheaper than in the review.

Maybe one day I'll buy one, but I keep waiting in hopes they produce one with even a remotely decent appearance to it. Also, when I've heard them in use I found them annoyingly loud to the point of giving me a headache if used for any length of time.

My wife and I were 1st (and last) Wooters after purchasing a Dyson 6 weeks ago.

The unit is certainly not worth the price. I've used Dyson's before and it certainly doesn't live up to reputation. I would seriously reconsider buying something refurbished from this site. When calling to ask for support Woot simply threw their hands in the air with a "not our problem" attitude.

I have a cheap Dirt Devil (which we were hoping to retire) that is still the household vacuum.

Big waste of money.

Big wate of time.

Purchase at your own risk.

It says you can turn off the brush bar for delicate rugs and floors on the Dyson web sight. I have a few delicate rugs. I read dozens of reviews from amazon and of course, from everyone here and no one has really mentioned if this works, (on delicate rugs I mean). There was one review that says this vaccuum eats throw rugs for lunch, lol, but I'm refering to an area rug.

Has anyone used this on somewhat delicate area rug? Thanks

I have some very nice and delicate rugs that I use the dyson on all the time-- the one area where you might particularly want to use the 'bare floor' option on to avoid damage would be on fringe. it doesn't chew it up, but if it's loose, it'll sux it up just like it wasn't supposed to be there. :-)

Other than that, it works GREAT on our delicate area rugs. It's like the new texture returns each time I use it; but maybe I just need to vaccuum more often because we have so many cats. I have one (out of six) cat that wants to use the rug to sharpen his claws and he has done more damage than a year with the dyson... HE might end up being the next throw rug if it keeps up.... X-(

Purchased this one 6 months ago and love it! From what I've seen, this is the best Dyson deal on Woot because of the attachments that are included. The upholstery tool is a must if you have pets. To this day, I can't get over how smart this design is. Clearly every detail has been thought out and no corners cut. Although it's refurbed, you would swear it's brand new! Saw this on sale for $470 this weekend and just laughed . Some reviewers felt it was a bit loud but I simply found the pitch a little different (higher?) from my previous vacuum but certainly not louder. I think there's an assumption that it will be uber-quiet, I know I thought that for some reason. It comes down to this - you never lose suction - so you're picking up everything, start to finish. Plus there are no bags, easy one touch empty button and a lifetime filter which you simply rinse every 3 to 6 months. Great deal and an awesome vacuum!

Can someone tell me how often this DC14 with this price has come up? I am thinking that I would really, really like to get one, but since I will be getting new carpets in about 6 months or so, and this Dyson would have to be added to my current credit card balance, I'm not sure if I should just wait to get one the next time Woot has it. The interest for having this on my credit card for a few months would not be horrible, but I don't want to negate any savings that I would make by buying it at this price rather than waiting a few months. Has anyone noticed how often Woot has them at this value? Thanks.

it does. Hard to get to and seems like it COULD be difficult to replace. (I've gotten curious and taken it apart.) I do have to say though that it seems much thicker rubber than typical vacuums. Also, I believe it has a clutch mechanism which shuts off the beater bar (thus making the horrible noise some have mentioned, (not really that bad IMHO)) where as other vacuums continue to spin on the motor end and will burn through the belt.

Yet another genius change made by DYSON to old tech.
