Anyone know if this All In One will come with the software that might allow you to scan documents directly into .pdf format?
I know that some of the more expensive HP "all-in-one" devices come with a software package called the "HP Solution Center" and it gives you the option to scan to a .pdf instead of .jpg, .gif or .tiff format.

Had one of these for over a year with no prob. Sent it to college with daughter and she still uses it daily. Ink was spendy, but found a refill place that guaranteed compatability. Now everyone's happy except HP, as I understand they make more on ink sales than printers.

I actually have two in front of me right now. My wife had one for work, and she loved it, so I got one.

If you set your preferences right, your ink will last you a long time. I do a lot of "Fast Draft" printing and rarely have to change the ink. I'd buy one right now if we didn't already have two - and I'm still tempted to get another!

Am I missing something. I see a few ppl talking about it being respiffied and other saying they can get it "new." The product description says, "new."

As for the photos, who cares. This is primarly for copy/scan/fax. Good enough. What a good deal. You can also get the #56 cartridges from Cartridge World for 12 bucks (that's the big one.)

Damn! I looked at Solution Center, and you're right. I've been using PDF conversion software unnecessarily. Thanx. But sorry, I have been the happy owner of several HP's, and I don't know if it came with the 5610.

HP is ink efficient!

Go for this one if you are using it for 1-10 people. Much more than that and you'd want to step up to the HP 7590 which has excellent print quality and efficiency with a much higher duty.

I've got a PSC 1401 (not pricey - not pricey at all) that came with HP Solution Center software and
it can scan docs into searchable PDF. I like HP printers. Have had them for years.

You have a right to complain, but at least make your complaints TRUE. Many people have already pointed out that this is NOT refurbished but NEW. Your statement regarding this being over-priced compared to thenerds site is bullsh** also. They are selling this for $99.99 PLUS $19.99 shipping...in case it's the math you have a problem with...that's $119.98 which is $44.99 MORE than Woot (NOT $5 less). Good all in one printer. My only issue with it is that the ink cartridges that is uses are so small so they need to be replaced more often, but pricewise you'll pay the same in ink regardless so its just a matter of convenience. Excellent scan quality too.

Have an older Epson Stylus CX6400 that is really sloooow to scan. Drives me insane when time is critical. Is this printer's scanner faster than mine? You techy guys and gals may know.

I may consider this HP, but my printer does read SD cards and such...a real plus for us as we take many pictures of our kids' sports teams and make videos for their end-of-the-season parties (for free). Sorry, got off topic...I do love that card reader though....

Thanks.

These aren't very reliable machines - it'll last a year, maybe two at most. The first failure will probably be the paper feeder on top. Then expect to have problems with the ink cartridge holders.

If you're looking for something dirt cheap and it doesn't have to last for a long time then this may be a good choice for you - lots of features and it prints nicely while it lasts. But don't buy one if you're expecting to get more than a year's use out of it.

FWIW, Epson's ink cartridge prices are much too high...found cheaper compatible ink cartridges at PrintCountry.com. Great prices, fast shipping, blah, blah, blah. Maybe the website will also have cheaper HP-compatible ink cartridges as well. Sheck 'em out.

Good all in one for most people. Quality and speed are acceptable particularly when the price is considered. I haven't had a problem in about two years of ownership though HP doesn't seem to think that the VIA processor in my recently purchased Everex Cloudbook is good enough for the printer. Every time I try to install the driver, some sort of incompatible CPU message pops up mid-process. Not a big problem considering most people don't use computers with VIA CPUs.

I've owned this machine for about a year. It uses separate cartridges for each color, so you save money by just having to buy cartridge for one color instead of all of them. The only downside I have is that if you put the computer to sleep before it finishes printing, you may have to restart the printer to re-establish wireless connectivity.

This is a great price! I already have one, about 3 years old, that I use for one business. I bought another 2 years ago for a second business. They both still work great and I use them heavily. I'm buying this for in the shop. Yes, scans into .pdf and faxes about 15-20 pages from document feeder. With photo paper and newish ink cartridges, it even does decent photos.

My 5510 was a slow scanner, too. I'm pretty sure this one is on par w/ the 5510.

These days, most any desktop PC -- and many laptops -- have card readers built right into them. I've always found the printers' built-in card readers to be mostly unnecessary. After all, 99% of the time you're going to do some photo editing first, right? Which means you have to boot up the PC anyway. Of course, if your PC doesn't have a card reader, I can see the advantage.

KB3NRY wrote: HP has a memory on their ink cartridges that FORCES you to replace the cartridges after a certain amount of time, whether you used it up or not. There is a way around this, buy saving spare cartridges because the memory can only hold up to 3 cartridge codes so you can "fool" it, but that is ridiculous to have to do.

Here is more info: http://www.hojohnlee.com/weblog/archives/2005/02/27/how-to-reset-hp-ink-cartridge-expiration-drm/

I've been reading this blog and the reader comments for quite some time now. It seems that it's more efficient to have to just use one set of cartridges. The site has detailed how one can accomplish this: reset the printer's memory by removing the CMOS battery.

However, seeing how difficult it was for some to get to the CMOS battery (seems HP has been noticed that people are getting around using this method, and so have made it harder to get to with newer models), I think I've come up with an even better method. (Got the idea from reading the above-linked blog. It is pure theory at this time, but I will test it out and post back when my printer is delivered.)

Before you initially install the printer, ink cartridges, and drivers on the PC, set your PC clock ahead a few years. After the install is completed, the install dates on those cartridges will be set in the printer memory. You should be able to get them refilled again and again for years without the cartridges expiring. By the time they do expire, it'll likely be beyond the true life of the cartridges, if not the printer itself.

You mean your fax immediately answers the phone without waiting for a few rings ?
Usually faxes wait for like 3 or 5 rings, and then if you don't answer the phone they will pickup the call.

If you receive a lot of faxes and a lot of calls on a single line, you might consider installing a PBX, a real one or a "digital" one such as Asterisk. I have seen PBXs which are able to detect when an incoming call is a fax, and which then direct them to the fax without having the phone ringing.

When there is an incoming call, the PBX takes the call and plays a message like "Please wait, you are being connected. Someone will answer the call soon..." and it waits for like 5 seconds without doing anything. If the typical BEEEEEP is received by the PBX, the call is connected to the fax. If no BEEEEEP is received, the phones start to ring and you can pickup the call.
You can also setup the PBX so that people calling you have to press a key to talk to you. It's very good if you are annoyed by telemarketers... "Hello, you have reached company/the Satellite of Love of xxxxx. If you are a telemarketer, press 1 to leave a message. Otherwise, press #.".
This will kill cold telemarketing calls, and you can feel free to hang up on telemarketers who press #. As for the 1... it's up to you if you want to listen to that mailbox or not ;)

PBXs are good !

As for the ink cartridges... eBay looks full of cheap refill kits and cartridges.

I think that HP is less competitive than before especially given the price of the ink cartridges nowadays.
I have a Canon PiXMA iP4000 (without the chips on the cartridges) and I pay like $1 for each compatible cartridge. Some people may argue that using cheap ink will kill my print head, but I bought a spare one for $49 and I have yet to use it. Given the price difference between the Canon cartridges and the cheap ones, it makes sense.

Unfortunately Canon added chips to their cartridges (for the newer printers) and now using refilled or compatible cartridges is a pain, while it's still possible.

I think that HP is good is you seldom print. Or if you're rich. This was less true back in 2000 when I had my HP DeskJet 840c color inkjet.

No I meant to say, even when we answer the call, the fax machine starts communicating during the call. (i. e. trying to answer the call) It only does this occasionally, say 1 out of 4 or 6 calls, but man is it irritating. We only use the fax once or twice a month, but it needs to be ready to recieve. I am frustrated
