Wow! These are legendary as the best looking dvd players (picture quality) around, they have the best upconverting as well! $229 on amazon.com too, what a deal! I wish I wasn't dirt poor.

I own an Oppo DV-970HD player and am VERY pleased with it. It only upconverts to 1080i, but that works out because my LCD TV isn't 1080p.

I would highly recommend this brand based on my experience. Awesome performance, picture, and price in one package. If my TV supported 1080p I would jump all over this!

Enjoyed the story woot. But I'm afraid possibly buying an Alive player is a risk i cant bring myself to take ><

they sell a phillips dvd player that has all these features plus a usb port at best buy for 60 bucks, but I don't know this brand the upscaling may be better. I really love the usb port though for playing divx files in the living room away from my pc.

Never heard of Oppo, but I guess they are legit.

A hundred bucks isn't a very good deal for an upconverting DVD player. I've seen several that do the same things in Costco for around 75 bucks. Does this upconvert the DivX format too? I'd honestly expect a better deal from Woot.

I have to post it and laugh back at music a decade or so ago...

Are you down with "O.P.P." ?

(not sure what to do with the other O)

Great deal. A lot of my co-workers all have one model or another of Oppo and love them. They only seem to replace them with newer models when they can afford to. So tempted, but it's neither near my birthday or Father's day.....

Oppo is one of the best players you can get. For those of you thinking it's some cheap no frills brand, think again. Just go to www.avsforum.com and read some of the reviews.

Oppo players use the Faroudja DCDi chipset to do their deintelacing/upscaling and they do a hell of a good job. Much better then the Sigma chipsets found in the big brand upconverting players like Toshiba., Philips, etc.

An Oppo 1080p player w/ DCDi is the way to go if you have a new HDTV and are looking for the best upscaling player without shelling out hundereds for an Onkyo or Denon model (which also use the same Faroudja chipset)!

If I didn't already have two of these, I would be wooting tonight as well!

An Oppo player will outperform almost any store bought Upconverting DVD player. And yes, they do upscale Divx/Xvid as well, which is one of the best features. I load CD's with divx movies and pop them in there, and I dont have to worry about pixelation on the larger screen!

NIce dvd player, is this a bit pricy even for a upconverting player?

If only more universal remotes had Oppo codes. Until then, you have to put up with the awful remote that comes with.

I think Honda/Acura followed Oppo's remote design with their latest interiors. Lotsa buttons, can't find anything.

OPPO is one of the best DVD makers out there right now.
This is a steal.
I'd buy this if I didn't already own it.

I already use a ps3 to play my movies. Would this give me a better image on standard dvds though?

Seconded! I own a DV-970HD myself. Anyone who needs a 1080p upconverter should pick this up!

Wow, one of the most amazing woots I've ever seen. I have this exact player, bought it from Oppo a year or so ago. Oppo isn't a household name but they make the best upconverting dvd players out there. Definitely recommend.

"(Note: The DV-981HD does not play Blu-Ray nor HD-DVD discs)"

Can someone explain to this Philistine what that means? If it's an HD player, how can it not play HD DVDs?

One of the best upconverting DVD players you can buy. I have one and still use it to play regular DVDs. I have a PS3 for blurays, but this player trunps the PS3 in DVD playback performance.

Sometimes better products cost more. Its a strange concept.

I bought this player when it was first introduced. I replaced a Sony which had poor upconversion, and I was a bit skeptical at first, but oppo got it right. The quality of dvd's and divix discs is amazing. The disc drawer feels a little fragile, but I have encountered no problems over nearly two years of regular use. Woot's price is great.

Check out some of the home theater forums - Oppo is THE brand that is coveted for upconverting players. There are cheaper, but none better. I've read of people paying significantly more for Oppo players.

A great dvd player. Always on top of ratings. NEW not a respiffied.... WOW.
If I didn't have 2 HD-DVD players that already up-convert and a playstation 3 that does a great job. i would get this in a NEW YORK MINUTE!

If you need a DVD player...... BUY THIS FAST. IT will most likely sell out.

I've got the 1080i version of this player. I wasn't sure about the Oppo brand, but after ordering one from overseas (through HKFlix.com) I am entirely pleased with it. Picture quality is great, regionless playback and the support for multiple formats makes it worth it.

Anyone know if this is any better than doing up conversion via VLC on my HTPC?

No, thanks. I will go on using my Vaio laptop with Bluray driver.

Some people care about image quality, though. This unit offers up-conversion that competes with $500+ players...

This price is a steal, and I'm very tempted...

HD-DVD was a disc format, not a technique to play DVDs in HD.

This player upconverts standard definition (normal) DVDs to high definition quality... and supposedly quite well.

This is a good deal for a player that plays SACD and DVD Audio. I have a good size collection of these discs and have wondered if I would ever find another player at a reasonable price.

hardly worth $100, and i dont care how much it is elsewhere.....worth $50 at most....it is not going to make my dvd look 1080p......got to have a tuner to be competative with the products on the retail shelf....admits it might not play that avi or mpg dvd you created last night......the niche for this item is too narrow bec there are more versital products out there for this price and a flood more on the way to ride the hd coattails.........so, you say it has 1080 out but if i play a dvd thru it, its not going to turn it into hd.....gargabe in, garbage out.......this is overpriced any way i look at it but i am glad for those who like theirs... has anyone bought one yet?

That's how good OPPO's are.

Yes. And for the record, VLC is a crummy media player for HD or subbed content...

http://www.oppodigital.com/dv981hd/dv981hd_index.html

This is arguably one of the best upscaling DVD players available now, packed full of other features such and DVD-Audio, SACD capability, Region Free, as well as DIVX/XVID capable... at an AMAZING price...

They have received amazing reviews among audiophiles and videophiles, and are an online favorite. I love mine, and have owned it for about 6months. Not to mention this is LESS than half price.

I'm tempted to pick up one, even though I already own one.

It's NOT an HD player - only plays SD DVDs, but 'upconverts' them to HD quality. I believe upconversion only works via HDMI connection though - cannot upconvert via component. (I can say for sure that's how upconversion works with a PS3 - I believe it's the same in this case)
