DragonXman wrote:Upconverting is marketing bull! I have an old digital camera that is not even 1 mega pixel and no amount of upconversion would make pictures from that camera look good. Try uping the resolution of any photo in Photoshop and printing it out. Put both prints side by side and they will look the same even if you blow it way up. Basically you can't add image information that isn't already there. Still if this things build quality is as good as everyone says it is, it sounds like a good replacement for my $90 Toshiba divx dvd player that died after only 6 months of less than normal use.

Might I suggest the program 'Genuine Fractals' for your photoshop upconversion needs. Just enlarging your image will make it look jagged and terrible, but there are a variety of techniques to enlarge an image by guessing at what the data would look like, genuine fractals is a nice program that works great for photoshop. I took some 3mp photos and printed them out on canvas 3 ft x 4ft without any jaggies or pixilation.

Bought one. Been processing for 20 minutes or so. Woot, take notice!

If this is successful, my Tosh HD-A35 will be for sale, an A2 will do HD duty for my remaining movies, and the 981 will be my upconverter, with a PS3 40gb handling Blu duty. Nice combo.

PS, throwing my sources at a Marantz VP4001 projector, through an Integra 9.8 pre/pro (with an Emotiva MPS-1) onto a 120" Greywolf screen.

I do at least understand upconversion.

Short version: firmware controls the operation of the unit. You can downloaded upgraded firmware to fix issues, etc. The new firmware seems to have a problem that it won't recognize SACDs and will not play SACD (as it should), which appears to be confirmed as a bug by Oppo: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=14260419&postcount=4803

So if playback of SACD is important to you, do NOT upgrade to the latest firmware, and wait to see when Oppo gets it fixed.

There are quite a few of us who would like to pound on the Woot servers, both tonight and on days such as Woots birthday. Just kidding. We do however, need something to entertain ourselves with during the "still processing" torture. Woot should sell their old servers some day so that we can each have a part of the thing that created so much anguish and distress for so many wooters. I would love to have a piece of Woot history. I would mount it on a shelf with a sign telling everyone the history of Woot server crashes. As much as I dislike Woot some days, I will always be a loyal Wooter ready to open my pocket book at a moments notice.

By the way, can I please have my DVD player? I am being oh so patient.

I've had my Oppo for almost 4 years now. They sell units for low $300's that have out performed $950 pro units.

If I didn't just buy my Panasonic Blu-ray I'd be in for 1 in a heart beat.

no, you download the firmware, burn it onto a DVD or CD as an .iso image, and put it in the DVD player and it will flash the firmware.

I'm in for 2. I have one of these and its the best upconverting DVD player I've owned. Great reviews for something in the $300 or less price range. I have a 52" HD tv and it shows recorded DVD's perfectly. Never had a disc that it wouldn't play. I've was sold on Sony until I got this Oppo.

You have to download the file from the internet and burn to CD.. pop the CD in the player, and it recognizes the update and applies it.

Here is the page for the 981-- basically, DO NOT use the July 7, 2008 firmware if you want to play SACD

The October 2, 2007 firmware sounds ok.

If its still available in the morning, I'll get it, but I'm a little put off by all the delays people are experiencing with checkout. Plus, I don't even own an HDTV, but have been looking for an upconverting DVD player as a gift for my sister, who does. Then again, I can guarantee she wouldn't notice the difference between this and a $50 department store model, so I'm not going to lose any sleep over this Woot. Speaking of which: Good. Night.

Man, I was just about to drop the gun on a PS3 even though I've been wanting an Oppo like p0-rn but couldn't see myself dropping $250 on it when I could go Blu-ray with the PS3 for just a little more. This keeps me from feeling reamed (I'm more of a poser Wii gamer so I'm just interested in upcovertng my crazy DVD collection and teased by Blu-ray). My order hasn't showed up on my account either but I got in on the recent Blogging Old CEO and it took more than an hour to finally show on my account so if you ordered and got to the waiting page after hitting the golden button, I wouldn't sweat it. Otherwise, it just wasn't in your stars. Good luck!

Yeah, probably the safest bet, although many players don't get firmware updates-- usually it's either the only more expensive models (because the company has to want to continue to support them as well as produce them with reprogrammable chips...). Although strangely some of the SUPER cheap models get firmware updates as well... but the more "middle ground" players by brand names don't always. So don't be surprised if you don't find upgrades.

You have to tweak it with the remote (no big deal):
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=760726
MAKE REGION FREE:
The latest shipment of units are not region free. To change to region free mode do this:

1. Press Setup on remote control to access the setup page
2. Enter 9210 on the remote
3. A secret menu will pop up
4. Select 0 to 6 in region code (0 is region free)
5. Press Setup on remote again to exit

Most likely yes. I bought one of the Philips units from Costco for my parents a few months back and was very disappointed with the video quality. It pales in comparison to my OPPO DV-970HD. If you are on the fence, I would say go for it as it is less than half the price of what these run normally. Plus OPPO actually produces its own players unlike Philips, which slaps its name on the lowest bidder from China. Believe me, this is what they really do. There is a huge spread when it comes to quality with Philips products. Some are decent, but most are poor to marginal at best.

I am so happy to see that a fellow Idahoan has the desire/stamina/need to post here well into the night. Idaho rules. It is also one of only a few states where you can regularly (as in daily) watch people jump off a bridge untethered and not kill them selves when they land. The Perrine Bridge over the Snake River Canyon is a great place to B.A.S.E. jump legally year round. It is pretty cool to watch. I am not brave enough to try it yet however.

I have the same set up, and as long as your projector has HDMI ins, it makes a HUGE difference. I paid $200 for this model and it has been worth every penny. You can still see a difference between the upconversion and true HD, but with the Faroudja chip the difference between playing back a DVD on componant outs and on this DVD player is night and day. The Faroudja chip makes all this the difference between this player and the craptastic upconverters you can get at BestBuy.
