Remember when you first saw a flip phone like the Motorola thang we're selling today? Didn't it seem like the wondrous future promised us by Star Trek and The Jetsons was finally, tantalizingly near? In addition to being filled with a renewed sense of childlike wonder, didn't you also wish everything in the world would flip open like that? Yeah, neither did we, but we have to put something in this paragraph.

This week, we want you to relive those nonexistent memories by modifying a boring old non-flip-top object into a thrilling new flip-ready one. Flip-top coal mines sure would save the miners a lot of tedious elevator trips. If Sammy Sosa had a flip-top Louisville Slugger and a handful of cork, maybe he'd be worth that $16 million the Orioles are paying him. And wouldn't it be a breeze to fix your car if you could just flip open a large metal door and gain easy access to the engine? (Oh, wait, never mind that last one.)

As if we needed to tell you, prizes are $20/$50/$100 for 3rd/2nd/1st. The rules and criteria for winning: our panel of geniuses can and will make stuff up as it goes along. Use Photoshop, pen and ink, collage, MSPaint, lomography, Lite Brite, whatever, but it’ll only be judged if it’s visible in our forums as a jpg, gif, or png. Try to keep your maximum width to 450px. If you need a place to host your pictures, try www.imageshack.ws or www.photobucket.com. We have no connection to either, but they seem free and easy to use.

Titanic was an enormously well-publicized flip ship from the beginning.

The fact that she was the most luxurious flip liner of her era and, at the time, the largest flip open object ever built immediately captured the popular imagination. The unimaginable disaster of her sinking and the great loss of life quickly took root in this fertile ground, and a large number of myths and rumors sprang up about her.

Of course, the first myth about Titanic was that she was "unflippable." This was not a claim advanced by either Harland & Wolff, the shipbuilders, or White Star Line, the owners. It was probably first made by the press.

Another popular myth that sprang up was that Richard Simmons aka "one wierd son-of-bitch" was rumored to have morphed into a 100 foot tall giant and this is what in fact caused the ship to sink.

Of course, most of the mythology arose from the sinking.
It is sometimes difficult to sort the truth from the rumors, since the accounts by survivors are notoriously contradictory, and some seemingly impossible events appear to be factual. For example, Joughin, the ship's baker, is said to have climbed out onto the poop-deck rail and held on as the ship's stern rose out of the water and then sank. He followed the ship down to the water-level, and was later pulled into a boat with his hair still dry.

But if the truths were sometimes strange, the fictions certainly rival them.
