Oh, wait. Didn't see the Linux. Nevermind!

Woot!

I am starting to tinker with Linux and I was thinking about picking up a scrap machine to do it with. Would this be a good buy for someone who is getting into Linux, or should I punt and play with the junker for a while?

That woot screen makes it all worthwhile if it comes loaded with it.

Worthless spammer.

Why would you compare these to those 7 inch netbooks? this is a slow and heavy beast. Not bad for $300 but you probably won't enjoy the experience, these specs are from a normal laptop from 5 years ago.

Wow, a 310,000 Megapixel web cam! How large an Internet connection would you need just to send that stream out?

A 310K megapixel webcam, eh?

Sort of overkill for...anything, as I don't think anyone I talk to really needs to be able to see every single skin cell on my face.

edit: prattk993 and I should obviously hook up. We could have video conversations with our new computers! ;-)

Wouldn't be too bad for messing around with, but Celeron's are garbage. I guess for $300 it's not horrible though...

It's running Linux, so you'll have far less problems than you would an emachine with Windows... I'd think anyways

Here's an interesting feature:

310K-megapixel resolution

WOW... 310,000 megapixel resolution. The camera is worth lots of $$$$ since it's future technology...

Here's a subject idea: What's the picture size in pixels (considering a regular 4:3 ratio)?

Need my ΒΟC fix.

I'm sitting here using firefox, listening to last.fm(through a desktop app), developing for the web, opening/creating office docs, reading email from an exchange server.

It's called Ubuntu. The woot post is exactly right.

The fact that it doesn't come with Windoze is a major plus.

I hear most of the virus, worms, trojans and hackers target Microsoft operating systems, so I'm thinking this LINUX will make it greatly less vulnerable and my purpose for this notebook would be e-mails and internet for mobile use. Do others think this is a good choice for that and for those reasons? Any further advice is invited.

For those who don't have the skills, or are just starting to play with Linux you should know - laptops are quite a bit harder to get working 100% in linux. Often times they have custom MB's, and other random and strange things that can be a huge hassle to track down. Desktops are much more standardized in that regard (and much easier to trouble shoot).
That being said with every linux kernel update more and more hardware is supported, and if you use a disto with a large and helpful community you might be able to get this bad boy up and running with little to no headaches. (no promises!)

also eMachines could do worse then Linpus for the installed disto. I'd drop some names, but I don't want to start a flame war.

Too bad you won't receive this before the Windows 7 freebie ends.

I'm not sure what version of linux this is running, but You could probably install a desktop over it right from the command prompt provided you have root acess and an internet connection/cd containing it. I know in Ubuntu you would simply type "Sudo apt-get install ubuntu_desktop" from the command prompt, or something like that.
Or you could simply go to the ubuntu site, download the latest distro .iso file, burn it to a disk, pop it in and boot from cd. After that it is pretty self explanitory.

this seems like a much better alternative than getting a stupid netbook. Anyone know what the odds are of turning this in to a Hackintosh? I've got a ton of white apple stickers just waiting to be misused.

orbs.

1999 called, and wants their high-tech back. Seriously? $300? You can get stuff like this at Geeks or EggHead for half the price. Maybe $200 with Win2K pre-loaded.

Don't get me wrong. This is a great laptop for linux, since it will perform well. But really, at this price? I've got a closet full of these. F A I L!

I'm running Windows 7 Beta on a machine with similar specs. It runs better than either XP or Vista (fewer hiccups/hangs, less taxing on system resources, etc.) and it's free.

Depends what "getting into" means. Development-wise, you can probably get GNU for it and have some development capabilities. I don't offhand recognized the "brand" of Linux, but I've been out of development for a while. The price is nice, but the machine is heavy. You certainly can use it to play with.

The only downside I see is the Celeron chip.

I think it's a good deal for someone that wants this type of puter with Linux.
For the buck you can't go wrong. And it's not *r*e*f*u*r*b*! :-)

Probably want to play around with a machine if you have one. Just hope your computer has all the drivers needed in linux form. For anyone also interested, linux has a program called WINE, which attempts to run windows programs on linux, though I have had little sucess playing games with it.

As long as you have your key and completed the iso download before the cutoff date, activation should work anytime and on up to 3 machines.

When they warn you up front the learning curve is high and not user friendly, I'd take it seriously. The hardware seems adequate, if you want it as a cheap laptop then install a different OS, you'd probably be fine. They mention Ubuntu, which is pretty user friendly.

But a netbook doesn't have a large 15.4 inch screen or a 2 ghz celeron either. The keyboards are also cramped. The prices at this time are about the same too, and this machine would do more, because it has an optical drive.
However it is an E Machine. I don't like them.

If this is the case, you could have installed windows on the new laptop and re-used the product key from your old computer.
