I do a daily woot blog where I talk about the woot, link to CSEs, find reviews, etc. A few people have told me it's useful. Google "useful linkage" and there it is.

The name Whistler implies high technology... mainly cause I think of the movie BLADE, where Whistler was makin' all kinds of gadgets for Blade that were of... well... high technology.

My only problem with this thing is usually I'm driving so fast that by the time it'd go off, I'd have already passed the cops... At least this way I can know to hit the gas harder as I've just been scanned, ahuhu.

I checked out radar detectors a while back and for the most part they work the same. Some are the cheaper ones (like this) and some are better and have fewer/no false alarms and have a better range. I had 2 at one point and just never drove on the freeway.

Something important to remember is that when the radar detector is going off that is when a cop is pulling the trigger of the speed gun so if you see the cop car real close he might have already got you.

Originally the speed guns were on all the time but they changed it so now it only comes on when you pull the trigger... making radar detectors a little less useful

This Whistler's specs do look good but the only trustworthy ones are made by Beltronics/Escort or Valentine1.

P.S. It's missing Ku Band but I don't think that band is used in the US yet.

im not so sure about this one. usually the cheaper they are the less advanced they are. Cops are getting tricky with the economy and all so you need something good to warn you and this isn't it.
If you're looking for a good radar detector (for all you speeders out there) try the Passport series. While expensive, they'll do their job...every time.

yeah, i hear you. I was out there a few months ago and I didn't even want to speed because it would have used up so much gas. no need to speed given how high the limit is out there.

I've had one for more than a year and it works GREAT!

The only piece of advice I'd give to buyers is that when it alerts, pay attention. You may not see the cop immediately but they're there. Ignore the alert and you'll find out just where they're hidden. ; )

I would have said that up until a few years ago, when their quality has really gone downhill. I would go with Bel on a budget and Valentine not on a budget. 50 states speeding experience talking here.

Not only is this not true, but it is a fact most
CHP just drive around with their radar on, and
rarely using a Ka pulse. So, this might help
on the hiway. More and more, in the city they
are using LASAR, and also on the purposeful
speed traps on the freeways.

If you are really serious, spend more and get a
Valentine. You gotta spend Lots to deal with the LASAR.

He might mean they are do to the fact that anything suctioned to your windshield is illegal.

Other than that they aren't illegal at all in CA.

Radar detectors are not directly illegal, but they are cause they attach to your windshield. My dad got pulled over because he had a gps on his windshield once. Look here:

That being said, I'd rather get pulled over for having something on my windshield than speeding :D

Whether you think this is a good radar gun or not, you gotta admit that it's a good price. The next lowest price I found was $65 at Newegg.

What? Ya save your $40 and get a $250-$400 one. Escorts and Valentines are the best, but you pay for what you get. I think these are fine for normal people. Save the HIGH end ones for The Bandit and Snowman.

This is a great price for a reliable detector. I use the XTR-330 (a lower model) every day, and I've written a review here--http://www.epinions.com/review/Whistler_XTR_330_Radar_Detector/content_422929272452

This detects pulse, POP, and instant-on, and has the feature to periodically give you an audible alarm to keep you awake. I paid over $50 for a lower model. This is as good a price as you're going to pay for a model with these features. The lowest price for my model is $58.99. This one is $65 at Newegg.com.

You're going to get some false positives, regardless, but that's better than no warning at all. And you do get warned in time to slow down--even a mile or 2 ahead in the right conditions. For best measure, get a laser-reflective license plate cover, which makes laser detection impossible, whether you have a radar or not. I feel very naked the few times I've driven w/o my detector (left in other car or at home).

I believe we, as American citizens have a right to receive all singles through the airwaves, seems odd that some states can prohibit this. Last I remember that is a federal law and i'm too, lets say, out of it to look it up.

Please don't delete this post, I am trying, honest!

In high-heat areas, don't leave one in your car during the summer - the plastic will literally warp and ruin the device. Also, if you have one of these and a cop does stop you, for any reason, expect to get a ticket rather than a waring. Radar detectors seem to bug cops. And no, they won't trigger on photo-radar intersections. Only high-end model containing a GPS will do that, via a customized database.

that's why most detectors (not sure about this one) either come with a visor clip or one can be purchased for a few dollars online. problem solved.

Would this work on affixed speed traps?

Like on some roads here they have affixed radars and cameras that take your picture and you get a ticket in the mail if you speed. Would these work on that?

The cheapest ones work fine on those. I've had 2 detectors and they pick up the fixed radar stations way in advance.

frankly I'm surprised they aren't illegal in all states. I mean, let's be honest, we're talking about a device whose SOLE function is to help you break the law and endanger the public in the meantime. I think it is incredible that it is ONLY one state and the capitol that prohibit it.

no, the people endagering the public are the idiots going 55 in the left lane

I hate to disagree with you but, lets say you get a ticket for 15 over. How much is that going to cost you when your XTR-550 doesn't pick it up in time? The price of a nice escort maybe and lets not forget those points and maybe even driving school and insurance prices going up? So over all a nice 300 dollar investment saves you money in the long run. And if you really into speeding the 8500 x50 can also be used as a laser jammer, if you get the sensors (my spring project)..

It should. I know in Jersey you cant be ticketed by cameras anymore.

I've been pulled over several times with one and several times without one. the reaction was the same in all instances: the cop could care less. either wrote me the ticket or didn't write the ticket, but never seemed to notice or care if I had a detector. I've been let off with one and I've been ticketed without one. I think most cops know before they even get to your window if they are going to write you or not.

you know what i am going to do?
im going to market a radar detector that is twice the price of an escort and claim it is 5x better.

then i will use the same logic you said here and apply it to my product vs your escort.

see the problem?
