Probably. Most units that I have seen have disposable pads that have to be replaced after each use. The pads are disposable EKG pads, so you can probably pick a box of them up from a medical supply house or on ebay. I have seen reusable pads - basically they're a rubber pad that you reapply a conductive gel to and apply to your back. I would go the EKG pad route though.

they cost 19.99 for 4
You can use the pad only one time.
So, seein as i would have to use this daily, seems to be a big money pit?

Although I haven't worked with this particular unit, I can say that if they are like any other electrodes from any other modality unt, they should last a month to six weeks.

I'd like to say if you use a little isopropyl alcohol on the the area of electrodes before placement to get the lotion/oil/skin flora off the site, they will last you a little longer.

The other wooters are right, using heat as another modality ensures a good connection

As a 35 year licensed therapist, this is a pretty irresponsible item to put out to the general market. A TENS unit can really make a back problem a lot worse if used incorrectly. If the unit has removable electrodes that can be placed where "needed" THEN it can be used by someone with some knowledge. How many people will put these electrodes on their ears for fun? that's the real question. Great Libel case. dumb woot. Most people with PT training will think this pretty scary. But, hey we will make money off the people who have to seek treatment after using this.......

I've had one for over a year and paid $129 -- and I consider it money well spent! I injured my back over 30 years ago and had back surgery 10 years ago, and this is just about the only thing that provides relief when it starts acting up. I -- I mean "my friend" -- has about a 42 inch waist and this fits fine, in fact it could go much bigger. Someone asked "how much does it move?" -- well it doesn't move at all, it's not a massager -- it provides electrical signals, the intensity of which you control with two rotary knobs, one for the upper pair of patches, one for the lower. Put it on 10 and it's almost painful, but ramp it down a bit and you will get almost instant relief. There are 8 different "programs" or patterns of signals -- you'll find your favorites quickly. It makes NO noise and fits invisibly under most shirts. You can put the controller in your pocket and wear it all day if you want. I usually wear it for about an hour and then remove it, after my back feels better. It has a timer with 15, 30 and 60 minute presets, but of course you can shut it off whenever you like.

Is that enough info for ya? ;^)

The pads that came with my (not this) unit were the self-adhesive type, and lasted a bit over a month.

And to get rid of my back pain, to help it relax and heal, was easily worth $20 a month.

Also, keeping the pads in the refrigerator when not in use is supposed to extend their life considerably.

Cheers.

Yep... it goes right up against your naked flesh. Electrodes... moisture in the skin... electrical pulses... (get it?)

That is... unless the back of your office chair has been bad and you want to shock it as punishment.

That's my point, people, do not think this is something to play with. It can put you into deep spasm and pain that will cost you $$$$. But, do what you want. I learned my lesson years ago and that is why I am a detractor. If you are on a pain med and you use this thing and turn it up, it WILL put you down and I would not call that Nirvana.

These units can be very helpful for someone who's musculature is very bound up, especially after an accident. I have no experience with this particular unit, but I've been wanting one for myself and the price point is good so I am pressing the big orange button

You lost me here. How will this interact with pain meds? I had this treatment for several months after PT and had no problems at all. (Though I did have to take off the lidocaine patch--but never stopped taking Vicodin.)

I'm wondering if there's any reason I can't use this on my hip.

I have a mini version of this. About the size of an ipod. Electrodes are re-useable. Had it a few years. Still works fine, but the trouble is it's a PITA to place the electrodes but it's great for sore muscles.

This one looks great since it's pretty much a belt and just strap it on and you're done. And yeah they can hurt if you crank em. Amazing how you can get that much of a jolt out of a pair of AAA batts with my little one. But I assume the 9v is just because it's so much bigger.

And it does run rings around my shiatsu!

As someone who lives with chronic back pain that will never go away and has had my PT use this on me and got relief (talk about run on sentence)I'm happy to buy one I can afford. Replacing the pads every few months is a small price to pay for this kind of pain relief. I would advise following the instructions to the letter. If you leave it on too long it can cause problems.

Anyway, I Wooted *excuse me*

1) It won't interact with pain meds! It's just an electrical stimulus.

2) The back back... (strap device) only serves as a holder for the stimulating pads. Each pads is attached to the Tens unit via wires. You can stick the pads on any part of your body. Stick two on your hip, on either side of the pain, and "slowly" increase the stimulation until you get relief.

I think it's time to see a medical doctor about your back. Could be someting more serious like spinal tumors. Don't want to scare you, though.

I don't think this should be dispensed without proper medical supervision.
There could cause injuries if not used properly. Also, you shouldn't drive if the effected leg (where the stim is going) is the one you use the break/gas with. Your muscles can become quite tingly and sort of numb, with a lack of sensation. This will linger for awhile after the treatment. The leads cannot be placed in certain areas. (Depending upon the settings you use). You really should be advised on that, as well.

PLEASE BE CAREFUL AND SPEAK WITH YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE USING THIS IF YOU DECIDE TO BUY IT. INSURANCE COVERED THE COST OF MINE AND I WAS INSTRUCTED ON HOW TO USE IT; AND FOLLOWED UP TO SEE HOW IT WAS EFFECTING ME.

BE CAREFUL!!! PLEASE.

So, one more recap

1.Meant for your back, and back only.
Any other place, can cause major damage *if humorous please record, put on youtube, and post link here*
2. The pads need to be replaced once a month *even if used on a daily basis?
3. Pads run about 19.99 for 4 pads

*Question, the 4 pads all used at once? or like is that 4 months worth of pads?

Spinal tumors... where did you get your medical license from? That's crazy to throw out there without seeing a patient and doing a complete H & P along with the proper diagnostic procedures.

This is another reason why medical equipment of any type shouldn't be sold or dispensed without being properly trained.

This is crazy.

Already was prescribed a TENS unit from my doctor. The pad last a long time if you're careful with them and place them back into their bag/ziplock after you're down. The pads that came with my unit lasted well over a few months (you just have to be careful with the ends that connect into the wiring). Yea, these little guys only need 1 batt in it, trust me, that's more electricity than most people need. I can't comment on this actual unit, but I can say that these machines can do wonders for you if you do have lower back pain.
