I am a Kindergarten teacher and I use this in my classroom everyday. I got it off of woot about 3 months ago and have had zero problems. It is so easy to use that I have taught my students, who are 5 and 6 years old, to use it. The make it very easy to email home, which parents love, and also to post to our class website. My school recently bought a whole bunch because they saw how useful they were.

I returned mine when I heard distinctive and periodic noise from the mic in my recordings. Very annoying.

I have 2 of these... first was HD version I won in a contest. Loved it so much, I bought a few of the non-HD ones for family and another for myself. These are good to toss in a bag, and whip out for on-the-go video. Image quality is better than you might think.

Now, audio doesn't work on those - only works on the Flip editing software. Big issues removing it. Just using Windows Explorer to manage files on camera. Camera is easy to use - just caution you on the software it comes with.

If you need more "oomph" to edit your videos with, try the AVS4you video editor 4. It works great with the Flip format videos and is also easy to use.

The flip camera was my first purchase on woot a few months back. I gave it to my kids ages 6 & 8 and they have loved it. Easy to use and works like a dream. It will not replace a true video camera, but excellent for the kids to play with.

No, No cards. You get 60 minutes of video record time. That is really plenty unless you're recording long form video. Try to shoot for creating productions that ultimately come out to 5 minutes or less - your audience will love you for it.

We've had one around the house for a few years and it's good for what it does. It's simple to use and takes decent audio and video. As for pepople saying it doesn't have image stabilization, it really doesn't need it with the lack of zoom. This is worth the $70.
I've used mine with Windows XP and Vista with no issues.

I picked one up last time these were on Woot! and I use mine all the time for quick videos of my 1 year old. The picture quality is not amazing, but it does a much better job than my phone, especially in low light situations where my phone gets so choppy it's not worth trying.

On the other hand, though, what sort of advantage do these have over a compact digital camera with video capability? If I wanted stills and video, would I have to take this in addition to my camera?

We took one to the Taylor Swift concert. More to record my 6 year old's reaction. They're great for most situations, but horrible in lowlight conditions.

Well it's not the most technologically advanced product in the world, but my wife loves it because it's simple and easy to use. It would drive me nuts because it's too simple but for her, she absolutely loves it and all her friends are jealous. So you have to think of the user. Don't buy this if you want a high end video camera, but if you want a functional one that take surprisingly decent standard def video with great audio quality, then this is a darn good deal.

This is an OK price, but its recertified. Walmart had a sale on these last week - the 60 min Ultra was $79, and the 30 min was $39. The resolution is the same as most digital camera video recorders, 648x480 -

With a bit of research this "woot" shows at least a $20 discount (after tax/shipping comes to $81.18)

~Take note, these are NEW Prices~
Newegg.com $129.99
Staples.com $149.99
Wal-Mart $99.88

I'm guessing that they have gone back to Flip and have had some work done, but if this thing lasts me a year I'll buy the HD one next time.

None. It comes with the cable you need for a TV hook up.

I've owned one of these for 3 years, back before they become Flip and were just called "pure digital."

These things are great for the price. We can throw it in our pocket and shoot scrapbook quality video in seconds. The device itself has never given us any problems in 3 years, its been dropped, survived trips around the world, etc.

No, the quality isnt the same as a full-fledged camcorder, but for family memories, or just plain fun, its just dandy.

I'm quite impressed with the one I got. Easy to use, small enough to carry in my purse for impromptu recordings, and works great in low light. I'm thinking of getting another one for my 9 year old.

This is a true "grandma" gem. I take short bursts of video when we have the grandchildren. When their parents pick them up, we plug the Flip into the TV (with the included cable) so they can show mom and dad what they did. Then I send them home with pictures I printed while they napped. My granddaughter has proof for her skeptical dad that she really did touch a shark! We currently have 2 - Flips, not grandchildren.

It's preloaded with software that somehow kills my computer whenever it attempts to load. Seriously, you plug it in to Vista, service pack 1 (32 bit) and three seconds later your monitor pretends it's in 'The Matrix' and you have to reboot the system. I've been working with their customer service, but they haven't found a solution yet. If it wasn't a gift I'd return it.

This might reflect more on customer service and technical assistance rather than the product itself. From what I've read, some of these were just poorly formatted and sent out to consumers. Lots of people had to send them back to the company and get a new one...then it worked. I'm still laboring through that process. Once it works I'm sure I'll love it for simple videos.

dyip32 wrote:Hm. I hope this isn't some other Flip Ultra camera you have.

My Flip takes AA batteries. I doubt that Flip would make different style Flip Ultras, so in case you haven't found it, there's a little slider-button thing at the very bottom of the camcorder (just next to the tripod mount) where you can slide over. Slide it towards the tripod mount and on the side of the lense, slide the cover down towards the tripod mount... not trying to be a jerk, but just letting you know.

If my instructions were confusing, which I usually am... see this YouTube vid at 4:05 (for version1 and the current version2) for removing batteries.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAK489IhTHY

Recharging is probably capable only on rechargeable AA batteries (x2). I say "probably" because I'm not sure if there is some on-board backup battery supply or something.

Thanks, but I have the Mino and I just checked it and it does not have a spot for batteries anywhere on it, even where you said.

And it's white...I know for a fact in shopping for these elsewhere, the Pink, Green and Orange ones are kind of hard to find. The Black and the white are everywhere. Woot has all the colors!!
Now colors my not be important to some, but to a 11 year old who wants a pink one - it is.

The one you have posted about is the 30 minute version.

The one being sold here is the 60 minute version.

They are different, and thus the different price.

The 60 minute version that is sold here will cost you $90.00 at amazon right now.

So, this one is still 20 bucks cheaper.

The Mino has a built in rechargable battery. Plug the unit into a USB port and it charges. The Ultra uses 2 AA batteries. Kodak makes some fairly decent rechargeable batteries.

I purchased one of these the last time they were up on Woot. The "recertified" model never did work. Since Woot requires you to work through the manufacturer, I contacted those folks (with the help of Woot customer service). It is a slow, agonizing, and often repetitive process, which I am still working my way through.
That beind said, I did go out and buy my 9 year old a new one at the store. He loves it. However, my quest for a deal ended up costing me since I will eventually have 2 of these.
It's a shame there is a no return policy at Woot. But, I imagine that is why it is called a "deal".
