Seems a bit useless since its disposable. I bought one of these marked down from a local department store, its called a Turbo Charge, and it runs on a single AA battery, and can be reused.

http://www.adrenalinetechnologies.com/

It came with the mini usb adapter i needed for my motorola phone and many others. They will even send you a free adapter for your phone if its not one of the many included. I got an adapter for my gfs LG Rumor from them. I think i paid a total of like 1.99 for the shipping fee of the extra adapter.

Disposable chargers would be good for emergency situations, but 1 time use? I can use rechargeable AAs in my turbo charge!

On their site they say disposal is the same as a regular alkaline battery, so I'm going to *assume* they are alkaline based.

That being said, *if* they are alkaline, the shelf life would be pretty good, actually. Just like your normal energizer/duracel aaa, aa, what have you types of batteries it will be good and not lose much of its juice at all until around the 12 month mark.

I'm in for a few.

Do they come with 'feet' ?

Would be better if the battery was reusable and the cap disposable, instead of vice versa.

LEM- wrote:Why is there a switch Motorola<->Blackberry?

Isn't mini usb a universal standard, that is supposed to provide a specific amount of power no matter what is on the end of it?

So is it just Moto/Blackberry device then? How do I set the switch, should I plug it into my G1? Or should I not????

Motorola and Blackberry phones have one tiny charging prong different in their Mini USB seemingly same looking chargers.

Motorola is almost the only one like that
You would set it for Blackberry if you had like a HTC Windows Mobile smartphone like the Wing or Dash or Mogul or Diamond or TP2 or Blackberry

WHAT DOES THIS DO???

I assume that this is only for devices that normally charge from the Mini-USB port, as many cellphones do. Since computers provide power to the USB port, not consume it, powering a laptop with this thing wouldn't work. Even if it could, a laptop would probably suck all of the charge out of it in a couple minutes...

Why, in a fire, of course! Everybody knows plastic is flammable, so of course it will be disposed of.

Really? I didn't know that. That's interesting. But I've charged my HTC WinMo phone through my old Moto charger before. How does that work?

You could try throwing them in a fire. I would probably double check the instruction manual before doing that though. : )

The only way I would consider buying one of these would be if the phone's battery was drained, I had no other charging device on hand, and it was extremely important to make a call. Otherwise, it seems rather wasteful.

I do have a number of the Cellboost iRecharge battery packs that Woot offered before. While they don't likely hold a charge nearly as long as these, they're rechargeable, making them useful for something other than paper weights for years to come. Plus, they use standard USB, so any USB charge cable should work with them. Also, Woot sold them for less than these, which is why I have a stack of them. I suppose that was due to them being intended for the first generation iPod Shuffles, but they work fine with other devices. : )

I completely agree. Less waste!

This is kinda disgusting. It's NOT recyclable. BestBuy and Radioshack offer battery 'disposal' because of federal laws that demand they offer the consumer some way to safely throw their batteries out.

Sad face

Not to mention Woot from time to time has little rechargeable things like the Xpal they cost a bit more but at least they last for years.

prateeko wrote:If you're not going to use these I've heard storing them (or any battery for that matter) in your freezer keeps them from depleting (as they all do while sitting there) for longer.

Although, I wonder how long you could just leave them sitting in their package before you'd see a noticeable loss in capacity...

Storing batteries in refrigerators or freezers is not required or recommended for batteries produced today. In fact, cold temperature storage can harm batteries. To maximize performance and shelf life, store batteries at normal room temperatures with moderate humidity levels. Also, freezing alkaline batteries will cause them to go bad.

Dude, $2 for a long phone call that could be VERY important? Times I would have paid $100 to eke out 5 minutes of cell time!! 2 for $2 even if I never use is is cheap at three times the price!

editorkid wrote:A few months ago, I bought a few of these to charge my cell phone, but they don't work. Does today's battery work?

(It's the 2007 Sidekick LX, but that shouldn't matter... as others have pointed out, USB chargers are standard and should work.)

Not necessarily. Some phones detect the charger that is plugged into them and will refuse to charge if the charger is an "unauthorized charger"

However, my Motorola will still turn on with an unauthorized charger (as in it will supply the phone power without charging the battery)

So regardless of whether or not my model is listed, I'm still going to get a couple of these cause they might come in handy. My job often involves lengthy phone conversations while out in the field... there's nothing more frustrating than a dead phone when you have nothing to plug it into.

For recycling, i bring all my batteries to the Batteries Plus down the street from my house. They told me its best not to throw alkalines in the garbage since some places still use incinerators.

I got one of these on clearance at Staples a year or so ago. It never worked and after I opened it up it was basically 5 AAA batteries soldered together to a small circuit board. One of the batteries had exploded inside and trashed the entire thing.

I am sure the technically inclined could make this into something more reusable. It seems like a good deal but the $5 shipping makes them retail price.

"Disposing of Cellboost is no different than disposing of any conventional alkaline battery."

OK, now we know it's an alkaline battery inside. That answers the shelf life question: two to three years from date of manufacture is typical of alkalines. Of course, these may have been sitting around for awhile before Woot got 'em, so figure one to two years to be on the safe side.

Disposable? Meh. If they're exposed to heat, say, like if you stored them in your car, during summer, which is a likely place for them to be, they'll lose their capacity and become useless.

HOWEVER REACHING for an upside to this product...

Do they contain either AAA or AA inside?
Can one rip them open and get a few out?
And still use them individually?
And would the price match the no-name equivalent from the local grocery/pharmacy?

And disposing of Alkalines in California is illegal? What do you do if you're a traveler there and you have dead ones? Lug them around like Grandma on your station-wagon's roof until you're back out of the state?

I picked up some of the iPod versions of these a while ago when they were offered in a WootOff. I used them with my 1G iPod Touch - they were best used as a "boost" to the battery.

I normally used them when the battery display was showing 50% of battery life or less - it didn't recharge the battery so much as it prevented the battery from draining any further.

I'm in for these - I plan on using them for my bluetooth headset that's charged via mini USB primarily but won't be leaving them in the car for emergency use. I can't tell you how many times I've left some sort of emergency device (flashlight, battery pack or so on) in the glove compartment for "emergency" use and then when the emergency arrives, it's completely discharged...

Over FOUR HUNDRED Woots and counting.....

people are using this and tossing it in the trash.

Hell why don't they put edible on the package? just use them and eat them.
