i did some research and this flip cam is approximately 100 dollars cheaper then the high definition one, steep price, but great result

For all those people with ugly children, sure, go with the low definition one, but if you truly are proud, quality in picture means quality in memory (think about it)

if you are truly interested in being able to make professional quality, this is not your product, if you're looking to throw 75 dollars at a refurbished camera, wouldnt it be prudent to get some background understanding of the other New products available first?

Yes a great result for +$100.

low def? is that what it is called today lol!

STANDARD DEF is a good budget way to do things in today's economy blah blah blah.

I don't know many people who really care about if a birthday party is HD or not lol!

I'm 100% with you on being a good consumer, but sometimes price beats quality (especially when you only wanted to try the product out in the first place like I did).

I'm a "video snob" and I still love the flip.

What do you use it for in your business?

I like my 30min flip. Although there are many flip knockoffs now. So I will have to think about it. Tempted to buy a no name HD flip knock off on ebay.

(Overall signature size was getting large. Recommended signature size is 5k.)

1. Is this HD?
2. How many CCDs does it have?
3. Does it have Firewire?
4. Does it have built-in GPS?
5. Does it work wirelessly?

I hope it has some sort of software to get your videos onto your pc/mac.

Flip has it built-in and it's super easy to use.

I discovered that it's not a 'drag and drop' type of device.

Good luck on whatever choice you make.

1. no...just standard definition.

2. no ccd...cmos i think it said in description.

3. no. built in usb arm flips out.

Today's camera tech really doesn't use firewire anymore...i think they've all gone to usb (from what i've seen on other flash/harddrive cams).

Hah you're completely right, had a brain fart there..

For all those filmmakers out there, imagine the possibility of having multiple handheld (easily mounted to virtually anything) high definition cameras that can be transported by anyone, with instant gratification if you knew you had gotten the shot! this is a dream for editing!

think about the potential, the concept of the flip is amazing, all i argue is that this one is like the balderah stepchild of the real flip

Does anyone know if flip files can be converted into Avid format?

NOTHING CAN CONVERT INTO AVID LOL!!!

Still agreeing with you on how great HD is, but I guess i'm more of a money saver.

I'll put that $ toward a shiny new canon camcorder.

Buy an HD and disregard this Woot. That's the choice you have, open your wallet and pay full price.

You clearly don't know sqaut about these, nor what the word "refurb" means.

this is not a replacement for a regular camcorder. it's more for that quick shot that no one ever got a chance to snag. the quality for this thing is good enough for youtube and other web video sites.

Well, in that case, I've got a cell phone for that (which I transfer via usb)

Yup, got one last time around. Love it. Use it. Would buy it again. Our mino gets used unlike our bigger better dv camera. It's too easy to reach for the mino when you want to capture the kids doing something adorable.

And sure, HD is out there. Go buy one if you simply must have it now. Otherwise pick up a mino and wait for the price of HD to drop.

I use mine with Mac and PC.

ah, i found an answer to my own question..

The .avi format is supported for direct import into Avid. Have you tried it

Actually, once you have it as mp4, that will import directly into Avid - no other conversion should be necessary

dont confuse people, avid is the industry standard. Since it seems Flip IS compatible, the possibilities for shots is exponentially expanded

I wonder why some people are on Woot. No matter the Woot people say moronic things like "Oh, it's not HD, oh there's no optical zoom, oh it's a refurb, oh it's ...."

Sheesh... the thing is $70 video camera. You want to act like Coppola wannabe, go buy a $1000 prosumer camcorder.

You want new, and not a refurb, go somewhere else and buy new. Your comments don't mean squat on Woot when saying, for the 10th time in a night, "Oh it's a refurb, oh my, that leaps into the vacuum, I don't buy refurbs, I am logging off Woot. I only buy HD camcorders. I was on here looking for a new HD camcorder, for $50 or less. Your bad Woot."

Anyway, for the rest of you who know value and are willing to take the word of us who have actually used the product offered by Woot:

I have been using Flip camcorders for the past 18 months or so. I have used the Ultra and the MINO. Both have worked perfect.

I was hoping they would offer a MINO because I like the way it operates. It takes excellent videos and a charge of the battery last way beyond one full use of the 60 minutes. One charge lasts about three full uses (60 min. each).

I paid $150 for my MINO back in the day, so this is a good deal. I use one on my road bike and the other in my car. Both use the metal tripod mount on the MINO.

Some of you have seen my YouTube videos before when I post them in here.

Here they are again:

At night, in car. Make sure to press "HQ" to see the quality:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JisQkpwxE1Y

In this one, riding into the sun, this MINO works really well in direct sunlight. But what it does is turn the sun into a black dot. Which is fine because it still takes good video when facing the sun. My other cameras can't do that:

Can the frame rate be adjusted?

abang wrote:Can I use this with Windows Movie Maker or Virtualdub to record?

I have used Moviemaker for years with AVI files. But Moviemaker does not like some AVI formats. It will crash when you start editing.

For Moviemaker to prevent crashes while editing, open the program, import the AVI file then immediately save the file on to your desktop. This will convert your MINO AVI file into a WMV format.

After that, open Moviemaker, import your just made WMV video and edit all you want.

The reason you do this is that Moviemaker will convert certain AVI files if you immediately open and then save it as a WMV file.

It's only when you try to use Moviemaker to edit AVI files that part way in it will crash.

The other way is to download a FREE program called Super C. (Google it). Use it to convert your MINO AVI file into WMV format. Then open that file in Moviemaker.

Hope that helps.

Bonus comment: although many files have the AVI extension, they are not the same "underneath." There are different codecs used, etc. So even though video from a digital camera or camcorder may have the AVI extension, they may not even open in Moviemaker.

The good news is that the MINO AVI files can open in Moviemaker and you can immediately save the file in Moviemaker that will turn it into a WMV movie. (WMV stands for "Windows Media Video" by the way.)

No, that's getting into more complex settings. These are simple devices meant for the point and shoot crowd.

Moreover, the price goes up when you start adding features.

I bought the 30min flip when it was last out (i think early last month) and so far i love it.. we use it at least 3 times a week, just when the kids are doing something silly at home or when we are out somewhere.. I haven't needed more than 30 minutes to get what i needed in a day and the video are so easy to upload and save. I have family that lives far away so its really easy to send videos or upload and share... we have a cannon video camera that literally sits at home in a box b/c when we need it the batteries are not charged or i forgot to buy a tape etc..not to mention uploading anything to the computer means pulling out cables etc. this we just keep in our backpack or whatever... seriously recommend these for ease of use.

i should say, with my flip, every time i connected to PC it asked me to upgrade my software.. i finally did and noticed that i lost 7 mins of recording time.. i had to format and load old software back on to get the full 30 mins.. thought i should mention that. the upgraded software was not much better and not worth 7 mins!

Yes there are newer cameras but you are failing to realize not everyone has a computer fast enough for the HD version.
I have an amd athlon 3200 with 1.5 gigs of ram and it will not render Hd video very well.

I have a 640 x 480 flip like these and they film splendidly.
I upload to You tube and get astounding clarity.

You would be surprised how much you can fit on 60 minutes. No one in their right mind records a single 60 minute clip. This is great for kids B-Day parties, BBQ's and kids sporting events.

Eeeh, as to 640 x 480, that did not really improve until the first HD tv's came out in late 1990's and the people that bought tv's then ($15,000) plasmas, remember those at FRY's, would never ever want to be caught with anything less than a $2500 SVHS JVC camcorder.

When comparing technologies, you should really compare the user as well.
