I bought one of these on a previous offer from woot. It broke within the first week (bad wheel module). iRobot sent me a replacement for this and it worked for a short while (couple months) but now it is dysfunctional again and I can't figure out why.

Probably true story -- forwarding from an email list:

****
True story:

I was working from home one day, dialed in to a team teleconference.
The Roomba woke up for its scheduled cleaning pass, and started noisily
trundling around the living room. I was in the middle of giving my
status update when I simultaneously noticed (1) the Roomba was leaving
weird muddy-looking tire tracks (2) my cat had barfed several times
around the room and (3) the Roomba was headed straight for one of the
larger juicier piles.

Randomized exploration algorithm my ass - that perfect trajectory was
nothing but pure robotic spite.

Time seemed to slow to a crawl as I lept across the room. I got to the
Roomba with my hand outstretched just as it enthusiastically ran down
the barf. In slow-motion horror, I watched as the overwhelmed vacuum
consumed what could be consumed and its brushes sprayed the rest in
every direction. I snatched the Roomba off the ground, using the
removable bin as an ill-considered handgrip, my thumb right on the
"detach" button.

The arc of my energetic lift resulted in a dramatic stage separation
about hip-level. The main body of the Roomba shot off at tangent
towards the couch, trailed by an explosion of partially digested cat
food and barf-coated dust bunnies. It went everywhere. *Everywhere.*

I stared at mess in shock, shaken back to reality by a muffled
"Beep-boop" coming from the eviscerated machine on the couch. The
Roomba sounded vaguely accusatory as it declared mission failure.

Nothing lets you know that you've arrived in the future (and the future
is very weird) like signing off early from a global teleconference with
the phrase "I need to go clean up after the robot."

Had that happen to mine after only a few days. If you've cleaned the brushes really well (and the bearings as another poster suggested) and you still get the error message, try this. Put the Roomba in "demo" mode (press and hold the "dock" button for a few seconds). Does each component work when its being demoed? My problem was that my cleaning head module quit working completely. If you bought it new and its still under the 1 year warranty, iRobot will send you a new one for free.

I bought a similar refurbished one from Woot about 3 months ago. The first month, the battery lasted for about 2 hours. Now it only runs about an hour before it needs to be recharged. But, I still love it!

No, this one has the mod that was designed by the Gov to monitor your home while it cleans your floors. You're thinking of an older Roomba model.

Woot OFF?

shawshah

I bought this same model on 6/29/09 in the last Woot! offering. It replaced an older Roomba I had. This new Roomba rocks!!! It is so much better than my last one, it's amazing. Goes over my persian carpets without hanging up on the tassles...moves from my carpets to the hardwood floors, over the threshhold into the tiled kitchen without even the slightest wimper. The cleaning assembly is better and seems to have a better seal...easier to clean. Anyway, I love my Roomba!! I used my Kirby for the deep cleaning when I "really" need to dig in. But, for pet hair, crumbs, little bugs and such that accumulate in the craziest corners, this thing does the job. Love it for "in between" deep cleanings. Someone mentioned that they were wondering how to deodorize their carpet/rugs...I take a bottle of the heavy duty Febreeze (sold at Costco in a monster dark blue bottle) and give a quick spray around the rugs...then set the Roomba off to do his thing. Freshens great, while the Roomba picks up the Febreeze saturated dust bunnies It's all good! <3

punder wrote:I got a roomba model: 4110 a few years ago from woot. It worked for about a year. During that time, I couldn't say enough good about it.
Once that first battery went, though, it just ate through the rest of them. After buying several replacement batteries, I have now spent more for the roomba than I paid for my Dyson. But the roomba is lying on its back in the garage, because the last battery (another $60+shipping) lasted less than 3 months.
I would love to get today's roomba because that first year with the 4110 was sooooo good.
But it's like that boyfriend, the one you'll never get over, but then he got into drugs and you want to believe in him so you keep taking him back but you can never let your purse out of your site when he's around because he's always trying to grab sixty bucks here and there to feed his habit.
I just can't live like that anymore...(sob)

Bought a Discovery model in Jan 2008 and with about 2 weeks to go on warranty the battery died. Kudos to iRobot for replacing them for free.

Then the machine started to just circle once it hit an edge. Put new brushes in, cleaned extensively, smacked it around a bit - I think its the cliff sensor (lots of reading of other users' write ups of this problem).

Customer support says the cliff sensor cant be fixed and is offering the 530 (new w/1yr warranty) for $199.

Buying refurb worries me because of the 90 warranty, but with extra warranty plan it might be ok. Is that plan worth it?

I have the older 4290 model and also the Scooba both purchased from Woot and both refurbs.

The Scooba no longer holds a charge and the Roomba's battery charge only lasts about 5 minutes before it starts flashing red.

I am not sure if the refurb batteries are just not that great or if I just do not know the best way to keep them charged and how to lengthen the battery life.

The other thought is about go green. I have started going around the house and checking to see what all is using power that really is not needed and since the Roomba charging base is always plugged in I am wondering how much power is it using??? Time to put it on a power monitor plug...

I am a Roomba-phile with 2 and 1 on the way. I urge you to back away slowly from the refurb. Even a new 535 fresh and shiny from the box has its limited lifetime, what with battery quick to lose its charge (1 hour, then 15 mins, then 5 mins...reset...1 hour, then 5 mins, then DNR). If you need iRobot help, call customer support FIRST thing in their time zone (EST, I believe) and prepare to bonk your head against a wall of frustration. Email support is even more frustrating as you receive canned response after canned response. Persist, though, and you may be able to get a new battery or brush module under warranty. If the part you need warrantied is out of stock, they should extend your warranty out for that same amount of time you waited for the OOS part.
Do yourself a favor and buy a new Roomba and stay on top of the maintenance and check the Roomba Review boards frequently for tips.
