I noted this in a question over on deals.woot (look at the "fresh" tab in the "ask the wooters" section). Dang, but that site is complicated (and I miss having forums). You can vote questions up, and comment as well. Quickest way to getting things fixed, ackshully.

pooflady wrote:I never did find your question. Honestly, if this weren't Woot, I'd have taken one look at the site and run.
The question was buried by the magic of deals.woot insisting on showing no more than ten things at a time. I wish there were a specific *BUG* section over there, and I wish even more that there was pagination, rather than an ever lengthening list of "more comments"...
I'm pretty close to giving up on it. I'll probably check it once a day to see if there's anything cool in the "sponsored deals" section, but I doubt I'll look at it any more often, really, than I look at sellout.woot (which is almost never).
It's just too painful and kludgey. The amount of browser memory it chews up is amazing (and there's some bad programming going on there, since the browser doesn't un-allocate it after leaving the site).
Nah, I'll just stick with my favorite three (in correct order):
wine, woot regular, and (at least during xmas season) kids.

I suppose that's a subjective statement, but here's what I've noticed. Using three different browsers, on four different operating systems:
The profile starts normally (for woot, which tends to have a high profile already), but moving from woot to deals tends to jump up from around 30k+ to 40k+, immediately. It increases rapidly from there, and doesn't drop back down until the browser is closed.
Selecting anything with the crazy popup windows (I know there's an ajaxy name for them, but I don't remember it) causes it to jump even more, and heaven forbid that I choose to comment on the leaderboard (which seems to be the biggest trigger). On my least tolerant system (freebsd+firefox), it can jump as high as 90k right off the bat (thank goodness I have a ton of memory).
As a good fingerprint, something moderately heavy like woot generally runs mozilla/firefox around 30k to 35k. As an alternative, xkcd.com barely shows up at 20k, and gmail cranks up to 90k until you select the "older version" at the bottom of the page, at which time it drops down to a measly 70k (yes, gmail is a H O G).
What's interesting is that, on those systems where I have more than one kind of browser (IE and Firefox, IE and Mozilla, Firefox and Safari), the memory footprint for either is about the same (for woot, in any case).

Seriously? I use top on those systems that are unix based, and the task manager thing on microsoft windows (I have two of XP, and one Vista). I run multiple operating systems on various hardware, using everything from openbsd to multiple linux distributions (although strangely, no debian).
This provides a nice memory footprint which can be compared from one browser to the next, and from one operating system to the next.
Did that help?

I've been invited to participate in testing deals.woot.com. I had some feedback I wanted to post there, but I find I am unable to.
When I click the "add a comment" or "ask a question" links over there, all I get are javascript errors. This happens with both FireFox and IE.
So here's my new feedback; fix your javascript.

My math skills are fine, but my ability to communicate them, not so much. Substitute 30mb instead of 30k, and so on (as in, 30 megabytes, or 30,000 kilobytes).

While I'm thinking about it...
What picture is deals.woot.com going to display on the other sites? Will it continually cycle through the sponsored deals? Will it just show a picture of Snapster, gleefully running his hands through the piles of money that innocents like me send in?
I'm staying up nights worrying about this.

You've got to go back over and look in the Fresh deals. There's a cheeseburger in a can that needs voting up to popular. Yes. Cheeseburger. Yes. In A Can. I can't decide whether it's hysterically funny, or unbelievably disgusting.

I would like to go back in time... and 2004/2005 seems like a good plan if I can join woot! sooner than I did.

That is actually unbelievably funny... and may actually taste good.

Billlbo wrote:So I just got an e-mail saying I am invited to the beta. But when I go to the site either by the link in the e-mail or by typing it in to the address bar, I get the 403 "Forbidden" page. Any ideas?
I thought that they were just up to green squares, so far. Let me check: You are just typing http://deals.woot.com/ right?
I should add that if I go there without being logged in, it just asks me to log in. No 403 error. What browser are you using? I tried several, all with the same results.

Go to the regular woot site. Log out. Log back in (with the account, of course, that received the invitation). You don't say which browser (the ISP is not significant--you can see regular woot, so we know woot's not blocked), but I'm assuming IE.
Which IE? Do you have other browser choices? Here's the link, all nice and clickified for you to try. Please report back, either way.
