I had mine for about 3 years. I only have one handset though. Another feature that works out good is custom ring tones for each caller. BUT.. you can also set NO RINGTONE for people you don't want to talk to. The base still rings but the handset won't.. You can shut the base ringer off for all calls, and you won't get a ring from the people you don't want to talk to. Of course you need caller ID to make the feature work.

Recently had to replace a handset battery (about $12 for an Energizer on eBay). That's it.

This is a very good deal.

I already have a 4-handset Uniden digital cordless set from Woot (with the same features as today's set, including voice mail) and love it. But I need a walkie-talkie system so that my 86-year old mother can let me know when she needs my help. Will this set work with the system I already have?

Yes, it can be turned off although I always have mine on to deal with phone ID's I don't recognize.

I have had this exact phone set for at least 3-4 years. Recently, we lost one of the handsets so we were down to one. The battery was pretty shot so we got a replacement for it at Radio Shack. Good as new now. In-use battery life for a new unit would probably exceed 1.5 hours though I can't say I've ever really pushed it that much. It was only in the last few months that it started really losing juice so we sought a replacement.

For us, this is a total woot. Exactly what we needed.

Another reason I like this unit is that the handsets each have speaker phone. BIG plus for us.

I have 2 boys who regularly play hide and seek with them, throw them across the room, and generally treat them like soccer balls, and they have survived. Well, one did, the other did not, but it was under extreme duress.

They're tough units. I wouldn't worry about it too much. I'm in for another one for the replacement handsets. They're hard to find--my hubby has been looking everywhere for them.

I'm not sure about integrating it with another system, but i know that ours does have an intercom feature (so you can use it like a walkie talkie).

Audio quality is excellent. Range is typical. I have a 1300 ft^2 single story concrete block house. Indoor coverage is good. I can only go outside another 5 to 10 feet. Of course range varies depending on placement of the base, obstacles, etc etc.

You can use more than one handset simultaneously, but as far as I can tell the base does not support multiple-line operation.

The automatic answering system is excellent. I really like that you can easily retrieve messages using the handsets. I hardly ever retrieve messages on the base.

We have used the DirectLink "walkie-talkie" mode a couple times (handsets can communicate with each other independent of the base). It has enough range to talk between cars driving down the interstate (about 4 or 5 car lengths), but they do not have enough range to replace FRS/GMRS radios.

The only real con, in my opinion, is the base does not wall-mount well. It comes with a wall-mount adapter, but the base stays horizontally oriented and sticks out from the wall a bit. Placing the base at the typical height makes accessing it a bit awkward. The handset charger base(s) do not come with wall-mount kits.

I entirely agree with this review. That, too, is my main gripe with the unit--the wall mount.

No, this is not set up to be wall mounted.

We have this exact unit and it's been great. Every once in a while both handsets will be off the charger long enough to die (days for an adult, 1 call for a teenager). You can still answer or call out from the base.

I have mine mounted on the wall. It sticks out some, but it mounts just like any other wall-mount phone.

I have an earlier model - TRU8866 (no answering machine). Mine doesn't function correctly with Comcast's VOIP voicemail. The Uniden (base and handsets both) won't release the VM signal unless you delete the voicemails at the very end of the message options -- in other words if you hit 7 to delete when Comcast VM asks you to, the system will delete the msg but the Uniden light stays on as if you still have a msg. For success, you have to wait until there are no other options (save msg, send to someone else, etc.) to hit 7, and sometimes not even that works.

Then I have to leave a new message on my VM and try to delete that one in order to get the lighted screen to go black. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. Real pain.

Anybody who has this phone on Comcast? Does the VM work properly?

Ethelron wrote:This may seem trivial. The system I have doesn't emit a beep sound when there is a message and because it is not in our living area I forget to check it sometimes. Does this unit have a sound alert for message waiting?

Yes, it beeps loudly every 20 seconds until you listen to the VM. It's actually a little annoying when you first arrive home, because by the time you've brought in the groceries and one kid and gone back to get the other kid and whatever else you left in the car, you've listened to it beep like 7 times and you're like, "OKAY already! I get it! I need to check the messages!"

If you're easily annoyed, like me, you'll wish you could set it to beep just once a minute or every two minutes.

We've owned this exact same model for years and it's always worked perfectly for us.

The only issue we had was the batteries stopped holding their charge as well after a few years. I found some replacements from Amazon for a bit over $3 each and they were back to normal.

Excellent and very durable phone system, though range is not the greatest. I have had this system (with 4 handsets) for over 5 years. Still works great.

Wooted the -3 version of this about two to three years ago. Great setup! I grabbed this because one of my batteries is sickly and the base handset speaker is distorting. I'll use this woot to replace the base handset and add #4. What's not to like? ;)

Mine does not beep. Perhaps it's a setting?

All the handsets flash a red light when there are new messages. And the main screen on the base unit lights up and stays lit when there are new messages. If you place the base near an entrance, it would be hard to miss on your way in/out of the house.

It's a krap! We cannot repel bags of this magnitude!

I've had this set for several years and I'm pretty happy with it. The features, clarity, battery life and range are good. I have 3 handsets and all work fine anywhere in my 3-level house and out to about 90-100 feet outside. I only have a couple of complaints, and they are really only nits:

On the handset-to-handset intercom function, both the caller and the callee handsets ring (loudly). So you really don't want to page another phone and then put the receiver to your ear waiting for them to pick up.

There is no way to selectively mute the ringer on an incoming call when the handset is on the charging base. So if you get a call that you don't want to pick up (say, in the middle of the night), you have to let it ring until the answering machine cuts in. You can silence the ringer on all incoming calls, but then you have to remember to un-mute later.

The base and each handset has a separate, independent phone book. Great, except there is no way to update an entry in all the phone books at once. You have to enter the update in a handset, then copy the entry to each other handset (and the base) one handset at a time.

The caller id can map an incoming number to a distinctive ring if the number is in your phonebook (good), but it won't map to the name in your phonebook (bad). So the only display you get is what comes from the caller id.

Probably not deal breakers, but annoying.

4-5 days standby per charge.

We've owned this for several years now and it works great. Lots of options and excellent sound quality. Calling in to check messages from outside the house is easy and works great with our all-in-one printer/fax machine as well.

Never used the internal phone book, but have frequently used the call history to browse through who has called while away. Also has a very long recording time.

Last thing is the speakerphone which works great and has pretty good sound quality (certainly not the same as when talking into the phone as normal, but still better than most other speakerphones I've tried.)

I can't really think of any negatives.

I picked this up on Woot 3 years ago for $70 but with 3 hand sets instead of 2. No regrets. Battery life is just beginning to shorten some, 3 years later.

Seems like a steal at $20. Maybe I should pickup the replacement...?

We bought these a few months back. We got 4 handsets. We love these phones. No complaints at all. As for your mute question, On the base of ours, above the 1, is written mute. So, when you are on the call the numbers have different functions. My guess would be the button 1 would be mute on this one too.

I bought the last set that came through Woot, they can't handle normal ringing voltage of 90v @ 20hz (like from the old-timey telco office). These are great if you have voip (I've connected them to a Zoom Skype box where they work fine.)

Perhaps the problem was with your phone line, I have a Uniden & it rings fine on the POTS!

I have owned this for probably 4-5 years now. Bought a third handset to go with it. I paid a lot more than $20 and its worked very well. I work from home and use the base station's speakerphone functionality several times a day without issues.

The batteries don't hold a very good charge anymore but that's to be expected after this long of a time.

It also works great if you have a VOIP solution like Vonage or your cable company's offering, because only the base station needs to be plugged into the VOIP router, the other handsets just need power from a wall outlet.

This is a great deal if you are in need of cordless phones.

Even with the dimished capacity of my handsets' batteries, using the handset still gives me at least a couple hours talk time. Its when you plug a headset into the handset or use the speakerphone capability on the handset where the battery life drops WAY down.

You can turn the ringer down to 0, but I've only seen the mute (soft) button appear while in a call and using the wired headset. Not sure if it is available otherwise.

After 5 years, I was noticing the batteries weren't holding a charge. I've found replacement batteries for these phones online. Paid $10/piece. Since then, these phones have been working excellently and battery life supreme.

Was a sucker for 2. I have additional handsets as I bought a 4 handset setup a couple of years ago. A couple of handset went missing and I bought the V-tech setup six months ago which was total scaffolding as the additional handset have a range of less than 6 feet from the receiver. The missing handsets turned up in the son's room when we cleaned it.
