The speakerphone on the base unit is also very effective and can pick up even a whisper at 5-8 feet away. You can also transfer calls between handset, base, and second handset or even conference all three together!

I call B.S. okay no I don't... they work really well for the brief time that they do work, butw when it starts to go out, there's no going back.

He he! I got these for my in-laws, and my mother-in-law's cheek would randomly hit the talk button which acts as flash during a call. She didn't really understand the function of flash, and would swear at the phone every time this happened.

On the other hand, at least there aren't seperate on or off buttons. I hate that in a handset.

Clarity of the unit was good, and the room monitor function was excellent to use as a baby monitor, or whatever.

actually.. sensitive conversations (ones you SPIDERS! GET THEM OFF! other people to over hear, at least not easily) should always be done through use of land lines.

Secondly, the 911 emergency response system is about 20 minutes more accurate (on a national average) when an emergency call is made using a land line instead of a cell phone.

Third, they look tasty, so buy them

There's a privacy mode on these phones so that someone can't listen in on a call from the base unit or another handset.

I don't think that would prevent someone from plugging in a corded phone, though...

I have 2 Unidens of exactly this model, bought from Woot in 2005, set up as a network. No interference with WiFi. They seem to have improved it since 2005 - larger phonebook. I can copy the phonebook from one unit to another and sync phonebooks that way.

The Uniden phones have worked well for me since 2005 and they are durable - but their batteries now have declining ability to hold a charge. This woot is cheaper than getting new batteries.

I do wonder how much radiation these cordless phones give off, since they are near your head all the time.

I have had several of these phones for about two years: work great, no significant gripes, though the battery life is just starting to get to the point where I am considering replacing them - they now go dead after less than two days off of the cradle vs. maybe 5-6 days when new.

So, If I buy 2 or 3 sets of these phones... Can I use all 4 (or 6) as part of the expandability or do I have to purchase the remote units without the answering machine/base?

I've had this same system for over 2 years and have had no problems with them. Range is good, answering machine portion works fine, and no problems with any interference from the wireless network in my home. Great price for this -- makes it very easy to have extra phones without jacks, etc.

Does anyone know if the handsets support 2-line operation? I know the base does not, but I'd actually buy this just to get replacement handsets for my existing Uniden 2-line system.

In my 2-line Uniden cordless system, my handsets look EXACTLY like the ones in the picture. I'm wondering if the handsets are 2-line capable, but they are crippled with the base unit.

Is there a model number just for the handset so I can look this up?

ahh. Poop... I have the phone but with only one handset. I just forked out $10.00 to buy a replacement battery for my handset. I could have bought this phone and 2 handsets for $10.00 more.

Its a great phone. It can take a beating. I have dropped my handset several times. Even left the handset on top of my car and drove off with it. Found the phone in a ditch a few weeks later, put it back on the charger and it still works.

It has some interesting features. A bunch of ring tones that you can customize for each caller. You can tell who is calling you by the ring tone you set.

The only thing that I don't like about the phone is the clock doesn't set with the caller ID. You have to manually set the clock. Otherwise its a great phone.

The handset doesn't have any button that would allow you to select the line. How do you do this with your current handsets?

I got the set with 3 handsets from woot in aught six for $70. Only trouble started recently after we got FIOS, and I'm not sure if it's coincidence or the phones starting to go out. Occasionally when I try to dial, I get no dial tone. Sometimes hanging up and trying again works, sometimes I have to unplug the phone jack...

Love:

Speakerphone, room monitoring, intercom (use it to call the husband to dinner)

Only complaints:

I can't get the volume loud enough for my liking...I have a preschooler and I work from home, and sometimes hearing over him is impossible.

I can't figure out how to clear the caller ID from all handsets and base at once. You have to clear each separately. Pain.

here's your receipt...
on 7/27/2006, you successfully wooted.
ORDER 20492871
You want 1

Uniden 5.8GHz Digital Cordless Phone with 3 Handsets & Answering System
You ordered 1 Uniden 5.8GHz Phone w/3 Handsets & Answering System TRU8885-3.
which each cost $69.99
for a subtotal of $69.99
plus tax + $5.77
plus shipping + $5.00
minus discount - $5.00
for a total of $75.76

This was the second item I ever Wooted - obviously I paid way more back then than they are offered for now. These were refurbs back then, and they are still going strong.

I've had no problems at all with these - I typically put all the handsets on the cradles at night, but sometimes a handset gets misplaced and spends a week or so off base, and it still usually has a charge left on it.

If you were so inclined to do so, you can operate these as walky-talkies...they have a feature where you can take them with you wherever and chat between the handsets. I haven't really tried that feature to see how well it works...

My first Woot, March '07, was This Uniden TRU 8860-2 and they're still holding up fine.

Our answering machine is now on the fritz, and I'm thinking of getting this set, but Uniden's compatability chart doesn't cover previous systems, only expansion handsets.

So, does anybody know if I can use my old system with this? Can I have both bases going, or lose old base and use old handsets, or none of the above?

I've used refurbed Unidens for decades. Literally decades. First set was a two-line, first-generation DSS (900mhz) phone that I paid close to $200 for from DAK (refurb, remember).

At the time, the best phone I ever had. It's the same phone seen in in-hand in a famous publicity shot of Phil Zimmermann -- I figured when I saw that, that I'd made a wise decision -- if it's secure enough for the father of PGP, it's secure enough for me. (Later on, I stumbled across a trick for using the handset to coerce itself into a base without going through the official synchro, which left me a bit uncomfortable, but in the real world, such tactics are most likely do-able on ALL phones, and, NOT done by other than a very small cadre of bad guys and gov't spooks (presuming there's a difference har har).

But, I digress. It was definitely good enough for MY usage, i.e., NO worries about the schmuck down the block listening to my credit card number on his scanner. Heck, the thing won't even show up on a frequency counter held right next to it -- you need a spectrum analyzer to even know it's on the air.

It had excellent range, but not very good battery life (first generation, remember). I didn't care, I just kept it in the base. I did like that MOST Unidens let you keep a spare battery in the base -- it kept it charged, so a fast-swap was easy -- and, if the power cut out (around Michigan, that means "WHEN the power cuts out") the phone will NOT cut out. (Most cordless phones are useless during a power outage.)

The NEXT generation I got -- also a Uniden refurb, but I forget the vendor -- made the FIRST gen phone look like a crude instrument. Instead of a few hours of battery life, it'd go for a couple of days -- and, instead of maybe 200' range, this sucker went *forever*!

I can, with the base in my house, ground level, deep inside the house, use the handset down by my pond -- about a quarter mile down the road, with a big barn in between (one of those HUGE hundred year old barns, with a METAL roof someone put onto it a long time ago) -- and, a LOT of trees and brush.

I got another of that generation for the inlaws -- and, had them run a test. In short, with the base in their house, at the bottom of a hill, my brother inlaw was able to talk to me as he drove down the road, uphill, then back downhill, into their barn, UNDERGROUND level, thick concrete and metal all around him -- phone worked perfectly, range about a half mile, with TONS of Planet Earth in between (the hill, recall).

He then got back in his car, and kept driving down the road. The "connection" was lost after he crossed the intersection, about another quarter mile from the first test.

That is just absolutely astounding range for a cordless phone. In *good* conditions (i.e., FLAT land, phone UPSTAIRS), I'd be shocked if it got less than two miles range.

I've NEVER gotten that kind of range with ANY other phones, and I've tried a LOT of different types, including a variety of 5.8GHz phones. IMO, the 900MHz band is a "sweet spot" for range -- it's BETTER than "true" line-of-sight, has incredible ability to punch through/around all sorts of obstacles.

But, there are apparently issues with OTHER services, which forced the industry to move away from that band. So, I'll hold on to my "old" Uniden DSS "generation 2" gear as long as I can.

Meanwhile, I did buy one of tonight's deals, because we don't have anything with this particualar feature set (two-handset-plus-base conference any-way-you-want, and handset-to-handset comms WITHOUT the base) -- and, it has DSS (one of my baselines -- I don't like being snooped).

Thinking about contacting the Woot service address to ask them to add one more to my order... (so that we can use four handsets, and keep one base "for spare")

They can work with up to 10 handsets.

If you buy 2, you can "link"/"register"? the handsets to the other base.

However, you would be short a charging base, since you can't use the other base for charging a handset without it trying to take back the phone set in it. Changing a base/charger into just a charger is PROBABLY just a wire cut, but do you know which wire to cut?

If that is what your TWO-line handset says, then these should work, since that label seems to indicate that your handset was originally manufactured to be third handset? of one of these.

"Unlinking" these from their base, and
"re-linking" to your existing setup may require some special incantations.

BTW, there is also a "submersible" handset that will work with these (in either 1-line or 2-line mode)

Been needing to get a two-handset one-base system for my loft apartment (I went to walgreen and got a $5 phone just so they could install the line.)

Got my first spam call on the new line tonight, so I need the answering machine and ability to ignore it or just hang up from upstairs without having to get out of bed and go downstairs
