The slicing knife alone is $288 on the Kershaw site (they make Shun)

For $500+ they better cook a gourmet meal for me all on their own. This is one of those items that are for people with more money than cents.

I have friends who are cooking nuts and they post pictures of their knives to each other on their Facebook page.

Another subculture I was unaware of...

Check the lower portion. There are TWO knives as a scissors. So totally 9 pieces of knives.

schonste wrote:Admittedly, this IS kind of a steal. Apparently it's worth $1000.

Define "worth"

MSRP does not equate to worth...and very few people see the value in a $500 set of kitchen knives. Some do, and they can get a decent set for that price...pretty much any day at any number of stores. Wüsthof, Henkel, whatever. Heck, even at a boutique retailer like William Sonomoa, you can get a high-end 9 piece "set" with six knives for this price.

Sure, this guy may be the Hattori Hanzō of kitchen knives, but seriously, so what? Time to re-evaluate priorities if you are salivating at this deal.

Either way, it's a woot-killer.

Better hurry, these are almost gone! At first I thought this was a joke. It would be fascinating to know who bought these--no one I know would even consider such a purchase. Maybe a top-tier professional chef, but how many of them can there be who are wooters too and who don't already have the equipment they need...

kevitra wrote:Great reviews for super expensive knifes. Do they really cut that much better?

Yes. You may have to get used to using them if you have never used good knives before. Just look for cutting techniques.

If you have ever watched a cooking show and after seeing the chef slice something went, how does the chef do that? The answer is good knives like these, and some practice. You can practice after you get the knives.

I knew there would be dolts yelling "Soultaker (1990)" when they saw this.

They clearly don't know how well-respected these knives are or how much some people love quality cutlery.

That said, I prefer to buy knives individually to avoid ending up with knives that don't get used.

Still, this will sell out much faster than some other drek that will, no doubt, be trotted out later.

You snooze, you loose. Well I have snost and lost.

i'm somewhat of a knife geek, and IMHO ken onion is the most talented knife designer in the world. i've used a CRKT m16-le as my daily carry for years - but I recently added a ken onion kershaw folding black drop-point chive, since it's incredibly sharp and beautifully designed.

i'm overstocked w/ kitchen knives now - but if I were in the market, these would be at the top of my wishlist.
