Best thing about Vornado fans is that they LAST. I have one that I bought about 9 years ago, runs damn near 24/7, and it still runs just as quietly as it did when it was new. Great deal, I'm sure I paid $70 or so for mine when I got it. Vornados are worth the slightly higher price because you're getting a motor that runs on ball bearings instead of just brass bushings like the cheaper brands do.

This wootoff seems to be taking an ugly turn. I've never seen a decent item like this last so long. Must be an entire warehouse full of them. These fans are really awesome. I bought two of the smaller ones off WOOT last time and use one in the laundry room to air dry the "delicates." These are so powerful. I also used it in the summertime to circulate the air throughout our lower level when the dehumidifier was on. As for the cooler weather, these would be great near a space heater or to bring the warm air down from the ceiling. Just my two cents..... NOW BUY THEM UP AND GET THIS WOOTOFF MOVING!!!

Um, hate to tell you, but no lights and no bar means the wootoff is over...ended last night

These things are cool! My freshman room mate had one. We kept it right by the window and it was powerful enough to get the room down to outside temp when we wanted it.

Ok, listen, these are good fans but I bought mine new for $10 at Bed Bath and Beyond 4 years ago and have bought a couple since then for similar price so this is no deal. Look around.

We have the clip that was sold previously at woot as well as the flippi and zippi models that woot sold. Love them all. This new bigger one will be the one by the wood stove. The clip will then catch that wind and push the air down the hallway to the back of the house. Hello comfort!

sdc100 wrote:A lot of people mistakenly believe that a fan is for cooling. That's false. Fans don't cool the air. All the fan does is to push air around. You can prove this easily. Close the door in a room and turn the fan on, aimed at a thermometer. The temperature won't go down no matter ho long it blows. In fact, technically speaking, the motor actually adds heat to the air. Fans can help cool you, however, in two ways.

1) Evaporative Cooling, which applies mostly to living things (or anything with surface moisture). When liquids evaporate, the phase change carries away energy (aka heat). That cools the surface with the liquid. Sweating serves one major purpose and it's to cool the body (and NOT detoxification as some New Age healers would have you think; sweat doesn't detoxify). A fan blows air on the sweat, speeding evaporation by carrying the vapors away. This does not work, however, on very humid days where there is too much moisture in the air to accept anymore from your body. A fan would be useless.

As an aside, evaporative cooling is how those misting fans work. You spritz water on yourself and then the fan sppeds its evaporation, cooling the skin. Again, it won't work on very humid days.

As another aside, this is why you actually need to drink MORE water on hot humid days, not less. Unlike plants, which need less water because they can absorb moisture from the air, we dehydrate more easily. When it's hot, our body reacts by sweating, hoping to cool it through evaporative cooling. But since your sweat can't evaporate into the already saturated air, your body stays hot. It then reacts by sweating more, still trying to cool it via evaporation. All this futile sweating leads to water loss and dehydration.

BTW, the fact that moisture is needed is the reason the above thermometer doesn't experience any cooling from the fan. The same goes for your computer and other electronic equipment. Yet we have fans inside the computer and other electronics. For example, the bulb inside a projection TV could burn out if there was no fan. That's due to the next effect...

2) Air Circulation. When you blow air on the CPU of a computer or hot halogen bulb inside a projector, the goal is to displace the hot air with cooler air. The fan doesn't actually cool the air, it merely pushes the hot air away. This works great if the surrounding air is cooler. For example, if you have an open window, a fan can pull cooler air in. And certainly, the air 12" away from a hot CPU is cooler than the CPU. It's not as useful, however, if you're in a closed room, with no temperature differences throughout the room. You'd be circulating the same hot air around. And while you may feel cooler because of the above evaporative cooling, non-living things won't experience any cooling.

The bottom line is not to expect miracles from a fan. If it's really humid, turn on an air conditioner which will actually dehumidify the air. And to answer Kizzbot's original criticism, a fan can circulate warm air just as well as it can circulate cool air. This Vornado can then be helpful during the Winter.

Whew!

Probably not a great idea since this will suck the soot and circulate it around the room. Worse, it may also circulate toxic gases meant to rise up the chimney. A better idea is to place it on the side of the fireplace, where there is less of a chance of it sucking anything in besides hot air. Even then, it might be risky. Check with people who might know.

Or put it at the far end of the room near the door, or even in the room you want warmed up, pulling the air in.

No you didn't. Not unless it was an open box return or damaged or employee theft.

I challenge you to show a valid proof of a "VORNADO" purchase for less than $20.

I bought 2 of the earlier woot! Vornado 2 speed fans, with the clip-on function. The first one lasted about an hour before the low speed died. The second one lasted a couple of weeks on low speed, but once I used it on high for a while and turned it back to low it sounded like a truck. Both were junk, both are history....good luck if you buy these.

Vornados are the best portable fans in the business. Quiet but powerful. And they seem to last forever. Not like other fans that "freeze up" after time. Vornado is the only brand fan I buy.

I have 3 of the smaller Vornados and one of the largest Vornados. They move the most air with the least noise. I use the small ones in a choir loft and am very sensitive to noise issues there. The big one can move tons of air with less noice than a regular 6 inch cheapee fan. I'd buy this WOOT if I owned less than 6 Vornados.

You can still see some stats when you go all the way to the top of the screen, where it says "Welcome sdc100" (in my case). Placing your cursor on the colored square will tell you the number of Woots you've purchased, the number of Quality Posts and how long you've been on. It doesn't lists the number of Total Posts though.

Yes, just like an "automobile" and a "car."

it's a fan.

Let me stress... Who cares? It moves air. I don't think any cares what you have to say about the actual technical name for this product. Its a circle dealy with another circle dealy that has blades on it inside, and that bladed circle dealy pulls air in the back and shoots it out the front, in the direction of your choosing. Don't be an ass

The Honeywells ($10-$20) and Vornados are completely different creatures. I have both and compared them side by side. While the Honeywells are made to look like Vornados, it's all cosmetic. For one thing, Honeywells use conventional blades, no different than your normal fans. The Vornadoes have a deep computer-designed pitch (aka angle), which circulates air more efficiently. That's why even the small clip-on model is rated to blow air up to 65 feet. My apartment is too small to test that but I can say that I could feel the air about 20 feet away on low. The Honeywell honestly claims to move air about 27 feet. The Vornado's grille and case also twists the air into a tight vortex, again improving air movement. Honeywell makes no such claim. The Honeywell is noisy even on low. My clip-on Vornado is silent on low, but moves more air. Finally, several people here have described the closed ball-bearing motor on Vornado. That should make it very durable. In fact, many Wooters have said that they have run their Vornados 24/7 for over 10 years.

The great thing about Vornado air circulators (as oppose to normal fans) is that the airflow is meant to be diffuse and indirect. Although you can aim it directly at you, it's normally aimed at the ceiling or a corner. The air then bounces around the room, reaching you as a gentle breeze. If used like that, there should be minimal paper movement.
