Per Crucial, this laptop has 2 slots (pretty much standard for laptops). Both are being used to give 4gb total. However, each slot can handle a 4gb chip giving you the 8gb total. You'll have to remove the existing chips to get to the max.

There are only a handful of laptops out there with video cards with dedicated memory.

You are absolutely right, dedicated memory is a must these days with such editing software as photoshop and final cut pro, if you ever want to render your image before you finish your morning shower!

The dedicated memory labels progress like this, 512MB like this latptop, 1Gb, and 2Gb.

1gb is the best you can get in a laptop these days, 2gb are reserved for custom desktops with uber power. This is the lower end of dedicated, but its still dedicated. you get your money's worth with this one if you want to edit photos/videos/regular flash gaming/low end gaming.

solid purchase for just about anyone... it has a good processor and 4Gigs of Ram with 500 GB Harddrive. The video on they system is very good quality to run bluray and most videogames. Unless you in the market to fork out over $1000 you not going to find a better buy for this price.

Best deal on laptop in last two months was from best buy (expired now) offereing the G60 for $429 with 2.0Ghz, 4GDDR2 (Max), 250GHD and DVDrom. the average bluray drive on laptop runs about $100 that would put the cost at $529, the 500GHD is about $90 which means you getting the upgrades video card and upgraded processor for free.

Quite often, refurbished laptops come from organizations (businesses, schools, military, etc.) with hardware leases. Once the contract expires, the OEM takes back all the old laptops and refurbishes them. If the contract is renewed, the organization usually gets new laptops.

Also! Speaking of refurbs, I think that if the box is open (i.e., someone buys it and doesn't like the color) and it is returned, those go back to HP and are 'refurbed'. Basically they make sure it works and all the pieces are still there.

Hope that helps!

Thats the equivalent of a 2,000 dollar Apple MacBook Pro and it has things like Bluray, HDMI, and upgrade options that Apple would never have. In fact this laptop is on par with the best of Windows-based Laptops and its still cheaper than the cheapest Apple Macbook.

Within months the power jack developed a short and it could no longer be charged. I opened her up and soldered the connection only to have the screen go bad 2 months later.

I also own a Hp z1000 model that was purchased in 2006. The laptop has developed a short on the motherboard that will not let the motherboard start the fans up causing the CPU to over heat and to protect itself the laptop will shut off. Average time until power off is 15 min. There is a pending class action suit for this and 2 other defects on this model.

I need a new laptop, but I will never own a China made HP again unless it comes with a lifetime warranty.

I find that negative post like this that are factual will eventually consume a company like HP and either force change or a buy out. My mission here is not to start an argument but to inform people of my mistakes to give them ample warning before making a decision.

I have my father's dead HP tablet (the z1000 series as well, I believe) sitting downstairs as I type this. It has had one of the other common problems you elude to, a known issue with other HP laptop models, and yet because he is out of warranty, HP will do nothing. The other model with the same problem has been recalled. We are awaiting a recall on this model. Until then, he is borrowing my Lenovo, which is ugly as sin and doesn't boast some of the same features, but has been purring like a kitten for longer (now) than his HP.

In summation, HP is junk. Buy this laptop if you are interested in wasting some unwanted time and energy struggling with technology.

With 512mb dedicated video memory do not expect to play blu-ray discs in BLU-RAY quality. yes you may get HD quality, but not blu-ray, this card just isn't strong enough. You can try, but you are going to get lags about every 7-9 minutes as the processor tries to cooldown and the memory resets.

Video memory doesn't have much to do with playing Blu-ray movies. If anything the fact that this laptop has actual dedicated video memory is a credit to it.

Also of note is the fact that the screen on this laptop is 1440x900. The 1080p resolution would be 1920x1080. So no matter what, you're not going to get the full resolution. It's physically impossible for the laptop's screen to show a 1080p picture.

I think you'll find the important points (which this card has) are hardware accelerated decoding.

" * Dedicated unified video decoder (UVD) for H.264/AVC and VC-1 video formats
o High definition (HD) playback of both Blu-ray and HD DVD formats
* Hardware MPEG-1, MPEG-2, and DivX video decode acceleration "

Note that they don't say "Full HD".

Now stop getting stupid all over my internets.

Also, I play Aion & TF2 on my HP dv2 for hours on end without issue. It's got a 3410 graphics card in it, so this laptop should be just fine for gaming if you don't mind not being able to run everything at absurdly high settings.

Nope, it's an ATI card. You shouldn't have to worry about it overheating because the manufacturer lied about its TDP. Nor should you have to worry about the chip flaking out as it cracks its connections when it warms & cools.

The Nvidia chip that got so many people caught out was the 8600 series (and possibly a few others, who knows, nvidia isn't talking). It affected both desktop & laptop chips but was mostly noticed on laptop chips, their lovely solution was to force the fans to run at a higher speed at all times.

HPs suck, and this is coming from an HP user.

I have to blow my HP notebook (dv4) out with canned air every week if I want to be able to watch Hulu without the video stuttering. Yeah, that's right. The circulation is so bad that streaming video makes it overheat and stutter.

Also, unless I put it in 'power saver' mode, the fan runs at its top speed at all times. This makes it really annoying to bring to class. People get visibly annoyed by how loud the fan is.

Oh, and the battery life is only 1.5 hours so it only lasts for about 1.5 classes (in power saver mode with wifi off and the screen at minimum brightness).

So, if this is anything like my hp dv4, SPIDERS! GET THEM OFF!.

ewww. yes I want a computer that randomly isolates with their new faulty updates. at least I can fix a bsod, but an Isolation error is the end of a 2k+ laptop.

My current laptop is a DV6125SE. It was a special release at Best Buy. It looks like a mac because the white glossy look. Treated me good till early last year. Speakers stopped working, battery dropped to 34 percent at a full charge, things gets super hot, power button is hard to push now, oh and screen ribbon broke (sometimes screen gets really dark, but by slanting all the way forward without closing I can fix it).

barely got two years out of it. It did fairly decent for games as long as I didn't have a high setting for graphics (and that's with the lower Nvidia card that came with it > 9150). I spent 999 + warranty, which I used on a wireless problem that started happening after a new HP firmware install.

I think I might try ASUS next.

I bought the DV7 DX1245 off woot with similar enough specs to this.

The laptop is cheap because the most expensive part the screen is (1440 x 900). It is fine for text, and older graphics applications like DVDs. A better graphics card would not be worth it without a high res screen. I agree, with other this is not the best choice for Hulu and similar, although I think a faster connection might solve most of the problem.

I have a laptop stand that just props the back up, no fans, so heat is not trapped under the laptop. It works fine. Once a week I put the nozzle of a vacuum against the grill on the laptop fan to clean the fan.

The sound system is very good. And even the speakers are good considering they are inside a laptop.
