With 512mb dedicated video memory do not expect to play blu-ray discs in BLU-RAY quality. yes you may get HD quality, but not blu-ray, this card just isn't strong enough. You can try, but you are going to get lags about every 7-9 minutes as the processor tries to cooldown and the memory resets.

ehh...no, I have this and it plays them in HD, stutter free. Expect away.

The ecost.com model isn't blu ray and the Hard-drive is only 320 GB. I'd rather have the space. Also, isn't the processor better on this one?

[Customer service? Well, you probably won't need it if you know how to run a computer.

EXCUSE ME??? That's idiotic...I perfectly well know how to run a computer and will put my IQ against yours any day. If your computer components are defective and it needs to be repaired under warranty, yes you do need costumer service. On the other hand, if I had bought this HP from my regular retailer, I would not have had to deal with it myself..they would have stood behind it. My first HP laptop (and first laptop) worked great with no problems until the HD crashed 6 years later, Was a big believer in HP printers also, but my last 2 lasted less than a year and both models discontinued and unrepairable... fortunately had the warranty. Just think HP quality has gone significantly down in the last few years.... (LOVE MY MACBOOK PRO!!!)

I can verify it plays Blu-ray nicely. Fits the wide screen nicely. Screen has a nice picture too. You do need to update the "DVD Play" software to the latest version first to enable Blu-ray. Best advice would be to clean off junk first then spend some time on HP site getting everything updated to latest version.

One annoying note is the "HP Mediasmart" software really wants to uninstall the "DVD Play", so get all the Mediasmart updates (which uninstalls DVD Play), THEN re-install & update "DVD Play". The DVD Play is essential to watch Blu-ray.

I can't believe I'm posting but seeing some of these comments I have to.

This freaking laptop is a steal at this price. You are getting mid-range 3D graphics, Blu-Ray and 500GB of hard drive space and HDMI out. All for $635.

Yes, it's a refurb, but that means whatever went wrong with it is past. They've replaced it and it should be better. Yes better because they fixed the fail and then stressed tested it.

Ok, the warranty sux. 90 days is pretty bad, but if you buy with your VISA card that warranty is doubled as long as you register it with HP and provide proof to VISA. So 3 months is now 6 months. Or if you want complete piece of mind buy the Squaretrade warranty for a year or two.

This HD 3650 card can easily play Call Of Duty 4 and World at War. It should play Modern Warfare 2 without too much problem as well and Left 4 Dead 1 and 2 and Half Life 2.

The processor is pretty good and you should be able to rip and encode DVD movies to DivX with this thing in two hours (maybe less). Plus it plays Blu-Ray which looks fantastic. And with HDMI out you can display it on your HDTV. Oh and your games on your HDTV.

Will it break in less than 3/6 months. I highly doubt it. Will one of these? Probably. Will it break in 12 months? Not likely but obviously anything is possible. I manage IT and build computers. This laptop is replacing my ASUS A8JS which has lasted 3 years (one year beyond the warranty) and costing me half what I paid for the ASUS but giving me better graphics, processing, ram and hard drive space while including Blu-Ray. So yes this is a deal and if you "need" a laptop that does these things, I'd grab it. I'm amazed it hasn't sold out yet.

I'm a user, not a technical person, and trying to figure out if the whole thing is messed up or if I just need a new cord (and possibly a new battery since it's totally drained at this point).......

Thanks!! Since I am not the technical expert, I read all these blogs before buying anything -- appreciate all the "chatter"!

When does it say that? Have you updated the BIOS? Since I bought it on woot I have updated at least twice.

I'm awfully tempted to buy this thing. I've searched and searched some more and it seems near impossible to find a laptop with these specs for a cheaper price. The only thing really holding me back is all the comments about HP being junk. I've never owned one, but I know how people come to the internet to complain.

I bought this same computer in April form another seller refurbished, other than the box it came in would never know it was not factory fresh. I love working on it, I travel a lot and do stock trading from my computer, it has enough screen to be able to see the charts easily etc. fast enough to run several charts at the same time. I also like that at home I can hook up to a 23 inch flat screen monitor and run dual screens easily. It does run a bit warm but I work it hard with charts and video etc. running at once with never a problem. Do have trouble with it seeing the DVD drive but that is a software issue not hardware. Go for it great machine!

2 years is appalling life expectancy. Up until last year, I was using a 600MHz Compaq with a Pentium 3 for work duty and Quake. And before that, I had a TEN YEAR OLD Cyrix machine that still worked. I don't care how hot the parts are, if it doesn't last AT LEAST 5 years, I'm not buying. That's just poor design.

has had this laptop. worked fine until just after the year warranty was up and then it stopped turning on. Went to go see what was wrong with it and was told that unless I wanted to keep replacing a part every couple of months, spending a couple hundred each time, there wasn't really any way to fix it.

Well, I have a Midwest Micro laptop I bought in 1994/5 that still works. It has Word, Excel, Powerpoint and a 20 meg hard drive (I think). That doesn't mean I haven't replaced it. Sure, it's a quality machine with quality hardware, but 20M just doesn't cut it any more. It has a good card game on it, so I still fire it up occasionally. I still use a 5+ year old Dell that needed to be replaced a couple years ago. Works fine, but again, the 20G (I think) hard drive doesn't cut it any more.

I'm seriously considering this. Hoping that I consider it just long enough for it to sell out.

just to chime in:

I've had nothing but HP laptops for about the past ten years. Yes, the one i bought 4 years ago was very different from the one i bought last year. Brand loyalty is a disease, but I've been very satisfied with HP, and will continue to buy them, until proven otherwise.

Every major PC manufacturer has awful tech support to some degree or another. My definition of 'awful' is pretty open-ended, but i haven't had good computer tech support since the IBM i bought in 1996. And so does everything else - my cell phone company, my power company, cable/ISP people, everything that has sales on par with HP has reasonably bad tech support, and the majority of them only stand behind their product to a certain point once its paid for. This is true because people aren't raising nearly enough hell about it.

I've had so many HPs because i ABUSE my laptops - i carry them everywhere, to stupid places where laptops have no business. I'm i pilot - i travel a lot and i need ("need") to be able to connect and compute. I dirty them, drop them, punch them, get them rained on, they get bounced around in turbulence and the occasional terrible landing (incidentally, i'm not an airline pilot)and so on and so forth. and they take it, in stride.. for the most part. all the lappy's i've had, i've killed (except the one that got stolen, which is what this will be replacing....bastards) and i'll freely admit i overdid it.

For what its worth. I like HP lappys. I've bought many of them, and have recommended them to many people, most of whom took me up on it. I may be off on this part but - the HP laptop i bought in '01 had media buttons (play and so forth) on the chassis, none of the others around then did. now the all do. HPs had remotes in the PCI slot before anyone else that i noticed, HP has those nifty little touchy buttons now (that don't do anythign but look cool... but they look damn cool) and now more manufacturers have them.

Just putting it out there for folks that don't know any better. Just like anything else, there are bashers and promoters. The thread needed a recent post from the latter.

Very low and tempting price. However, I've had an HP desktop for 2 years that I've only been mildly pleased with. I had to replace the RAM sticks after about a year of use, and now it's having start-up troubles again. The fact that it runs on Vista may be one reason for my dissatisfaction, so if Windows 7 is a significant improvement, maybe this will be worth it. However, I've been using a Sony Vaio laptop (with XP) since 2006, and it's been a beast. That's the way I'll go when it's time to buy again.

This is utter garbage. Any ATI card that is UVD capable can decode Blu Ray at full Blu Ray spec (H.264 @ 40Mbit/s).

This means that any ATI card based on the M71 mobility platform (HD2300), the RV610 desktop platform(HD2400), or better have hardware decoding that meets the Blu Ray standard.

1920x1080 @ 24p or @50/60i, or a maximum of 40Mbit/s for BD-Live is easily done on most modern PCs.

Do you really think that the $99 LG BluRay player, for example, has the computing/decoding power of a C2D PC with a dedicated modern GPU?

Got a WAY better laptop from Toshiba Direct..
$880 total for an HD w/HTMI out, 17" 3G RAM, 500G HD, 3 yr warranty, windows 7 with a year of Norton.

Toshiba's last a good long time, and they AREN'T allowing China to put in programs to block the Net from their people like HP, Dell, and Acer. So I want to support Toshiba!

It *does* have HDMI output to connect to that 1080p TV

*AND* have you ever seen a 17" screen with a 1920x1080 native resolution? Makes everything *but* HD playback look super tiny.

Having recently purchased an HP laptop, and found
their "customer care" to be essentially worthless,
I can appreciate the validity of these many negative
comments.

Yet, it did sell out. There were only 445 units,
but still, this has the look and wail of a real dog

I have a dv7 without the Blu-Ray. It is a great laptop. My only gripe is that the keyboard is very difficult to see in low light situations. I have bought a USB kepboard light, which helps. But the keys are reflective, and the lettering in white - it just washes out.

It's a real good looking laptop - keep a lint free cloth nearby for the fingerprints that get EVERYWHERE. The screen is super sharp; super bright. I'm running Vista 64, and waiting for Win7 upgrade to get delivered.

Without the Blu-Ray, I got mine for $550 at BestBuy with an AIO HP wireless printer.
