I thought about how I have too many things from woot I don't use, but then I thought it's a 7 in 1 gadget for $49.99. That works out to $7.14 a gadget =D

Found a reviewer on Alatest that gives it 4 stars. But it's in french, so translation is needed.

I do a daily woot blog where I talk about the woot, link to CSEs, find reviews, etc. A few people have told me it's useful. Google "useful linkage" and there it is.

LEM- wrote:Are you connecting Mini DV to HDTV via analog cable (aka yellow, red and white)? If so, you're loosing the quality right there. The proper way would be to transfer video via firewire or USB to the PC and burn them on a DVD. Only then you'll be able to enjoy the true quality (albeit not HD) of the video you record. Oh, and once it on your PC, who cares about tapes.

This one comes with analog TV cable also (and only one audio link = mono = eww), so you'd still have to transfer to PC and burn it to some sort of HD media (blu-ray?) to get the full kick out of it on your HDTV. Or watch on a PC screen for that matter....

Hi thanks for the reply. The A/V cable is what I used for playback. I have transferred some video through Firewire and burned to DVD to give away, and I have some saved on the PC, but to be honest I haven't watched any of it. It is such a pain to do the 1:1 transfer speed from tape to PC (and can't use the PC in the process) and cutting up the scenes to categorize on DVD is a job in itself. Taking 5 hours out of my day to transfer and organize a 2 hour tape just isn't fun.

I think I need to find another MiniDV to transfer my tapes to PC. I suspect a mis-aligned head because ALL my tapes stopped working, even tapes stored in different places of the house. New recordings on new tapes work, though.

Until then I think the $50 should be worth it for now.

yeah, i got one. only my second woot purchase (about 16 shirt.woot, however), to go with the roomba, and this one's going to my mom. she inherited my old digital recorder a couple years ago and it is absolute garbage. you know you're in trouble when there's spelling and grammar issues in the english section of the manual and even on the box. her 8gig card sounds like it will hold a couple hours, which is perfect. she used to record piano recitals and concerts and such but now, i don't know. it's a just in case purchase for the future and a great christmas present. woot, you've done it again.

34 woots for shirts, most recent: 10/23/12: Fresh Cake Remix (L); 9/22/10 - iHome Optical Netbook Mouse; 7/12/10 - Woot Off Lights; 5/26/10 - Jolly Roger Floor Mat; 11/23/09 - Memorex 720p HD Mini Camcorder; 3/23/09 - iRobot Roomba 535 Robotic Vacuum

On the http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1089293 page Huey says "It works fine with 8gb SDHC and ebay NP60 1400 mAH (original battery is NP60 1050 mAH)." I checked and the NP60 batteries on ebay are under $5. I'm just wondering if it will work with a 16 or even 32GB SDHC.

I'm worried about the sound quality. From the youtube videos I saw there seems to be quite a bit of hum and buzz. I guss I can sort that out with Audio Forge, but a bit of a pity.

The youtube videos didn't seem to bad. Going for it.

docflash

the videos on youtube are informative, especially if you turn up the sound and expand the picture to full screen.

the trailer park video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvXjZ4Kel-o

when opened to full screen isn't bad for a $50 unit, and it has an example of the digital zoom at about 56 seconds in. the sounds (at low level) are clear: you can hear the cricket very well, and the sound of the car door closing in the gas station a few hundred yards away is clear, too.

this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOivuLuDvww&NR=1

has a guy picking guitar very, very quietly, recording w/ the memorex hd videocam. he explains why it's recorded at such a low level:

P.S. I have to talk as well as play low due to my wife being asleep in the living room (she sleeps on the couch and has ever since I've known her. She just can't sleep in the bed for some reason), so please forgive these videos being so low. I know you can't hear the full range of tone on my guitar due to this.

if you let the video play thru, you'll get some other links, including an acoustic jam session by the guy who made the above video. it's what you'd expect from a cheap unit. but it's perfect for youtube stuff.

Sounds like the built-in mic, however limited, is sufficient to pick up regular speech perfectly. It does exactly what I need it to do, I'm in for one! Thanks chrisnck.

(Edit: Thanks docflash, too, for clearing up the low-volume misunderstanding. I missed that rather important explanation in the video.)

This would be a good thing to throw in your car to use to use to record the aftermath of a car crash. With HD video, sound, and moving picture the other people will be completely unable make up things that were wrong with their car. Happens all the time.

This camera is a STEAL at $50. Especially if all you do is post on Youtube (which degrades video down to 2 MB/sec anyway):

First link below is the Memorex camera on Youtube at 720p:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvXjZ4Kel-o (press HD to see 720p)

The next link is my Panasonic HDC-HS100 (MSRP $1199) at 1080p

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvG1dAv60i4 (press HD to see 1080p)

The Memorex is looking pretty nice; reasonable color and fairly sharp.

Obviously, it doesn't have the features of my Panasonic, but for $50 - pretty good 720p.

FYI my Panasonic has 5.1 audio, optical stabilizer, 1080p mode, and 17 MB/sec in HA mode.

If ANY of those features mattered to you, you would not be considering this $50 camera.

5.1 microphone is 5 microphones (a tiny flush-mount on the Panasonic).

2 are left right FRONT
2 are left right REAR
1 is center microphone.

That is 5.1 audio (Dolby Digital).

The wind noise is unfortunately just as bad as my standard definition Canon with 2.1 audio (left and right stereo microphone).

The Memorex camera is probably mono audio, but sufficient for Youtube.

I can but the transfer plus the program required to do it eats up a fair amount of CPU cycles. I prefer leaving it alone, lest I have to do the 2 hours again.

LEM- wrote:Let's sum it up:

1. It has motion detection feature - starts recording when sees motion... When does it stop? When motion ends, or it keeps going?

2. It can record in low light - How low?

3. Can it work off the power line (with charger plugged in) as opposed to off the battery?

Now - if the answers to these are all satisfactory, this may actually work as a low budget security camera! Or can it?

I just skimmed through the manual (posted earlier) and I can answer #1. With motion detection turned on, if there is motion for 3 seconds, it will start recording until motion stops for 3 seconds, when it stops recording.

Anyway, I am really considering buying this. Can anyone comment on the battery life?

the manual says:
Storage System–Internal--64Mb Flash Memory
External--Up to 2GB SD Card

The question is does it function properly with 4,8,16,or 32 GB SD Cards?

also:
SUPPORTED OPERATING SYSTEMS
This unit is compatible with Microsoft Windows XP (Home or Professional
Edition with Service Pack 2 or higher) or Vista.

will this function with mac, or would it work it I did something to it... and what would that something have to be?

Am I safe in assuming that the SDHC class rating won't matter? What's the approximate MByte/s for 720p video?

TeamTEOR

quality posts: 0 Private Messages TeamTEOR

After looking a the YouTube videos, I am in for one. I tend to use a tripod so all of the issues those people had with the video being jumpy would not be an issue for me. The colors and video were good enough for me. I normally do not bother with zoom, if I need it I'll use my Sony Mini-8 camera and deal with the pain in the butt USB conversion that it uses, but I still would not have 720p like this camera.

thaskaman

quality posts: 15 Private Messages thaskaman

30fps is pretty standard now-a-days, though semi low end since Blu Ray and HD LCD etc etc is flooding the market

for a camera to sneak into concerts or quickly record you and your friends goofing off, this is perfect

this would be better than a cell phone recording, but not necessarily better than some digital cameras that record video thats on the market atm

expands with SD cards, sooooo dont be lazy just go out and buy 8gb++ and you should be set
receive the camera, check the battery, then eBay Hong Kong for a higher mAh rated battery...not like they all come from the same factories!! lol

im in for one
perfect throw away camera if worst case, but should provide some quick video captures of epic camping trips

cheers
