Would be nice to also get the remote, but I'm not holding my breath for that one, especially since this is quite a bargain.

But if you can get the remote, would love to have it :D

Dude...we are on the same page! Why pay for HD and Tivo service when its free. I have basic cable (80 channels)for $20mo and OTA HD signal with 40 channels free. PC is a Tivo and streams to my other PC's, Cell Phone, also any PC on the internet and watch my recorded shows. Not to mention games, HULU.com, Netflix.com etc.

akwebb81 wrote:1- this is a little complex, yes, it will tune whatever channel you have selected on the cable box. BUT, if you want the most functionality, use a Vista/Windows 7 media center to tune all your channels. To do this with a settop box, you have to get a pc remote with an IR blaster (little cable to sends IR signals to your cable box). This way, when you change your channel on the pc, it syncs with cable box.

You will not get your HD channels from the box, only the SD channels (as it only uses analog signal).

2-My suggestion. Drop the cable box, use the basic cable for the analog connection. Then use either OTA signal for local/HD channels OR setup the ClearQam signal (comes through regular cable like analog, but gives you all local stations and some additional in HD). ClearQam can be an issue as it doesn't play well with Vista MC.

I recently built a htpc with Vista Ultimate and use a analog card for basic cable and a HDHomeRun box for ClearQam signal. The channel guide in Windows Media Center is AWESOME, way better than Time Warner Cable. While I miss some of the HD channels I had, I don't miss spending the extra $50/mo. I purchased 2 of the pci tuners to build my parents a htpc. Also a note, in Vista, you are limited to 2 ATSC/QAM tuners and 2 NTSC/Analog tuners. There are work arounds for this, but it can be a little involved if you're not used to working with registry edits. From what I hear, Windows 7 doesn't have that limitation.

And remember you degrade your signal everytime you split a cable, so if you split your cable 4 ways when it enters the house, each cable is automatically 25% of the original signal and if you split it again in 2, that's now 1/8 of the original signal strength. To address this, take out unnecessary splitters or buy a cable distribution amp.

Most likley not, but you can either cut or modify the existing bracket, its not that hard, or you can simply remove it, most brackets are held on with only two screws. i would suggest just modifying the current one.

combo tuner = one port for analog, one port for digital. Both can be used at the same time.

hybrid tuner = one port for both analog and digital, but only one can be used at a time.

Thinking about buying this, but before I do, does anyone know where one could pick up the remote for this? Will any Windows Media Center remote work? If so, any recommendations? I bought the Pinnacle one in a previous woot!, but a capacitor in it exploded. Worked great though.

So is the 650 going to include the composite/s-video cable? A sibling of mine was going to order the 650 but ended up just ordering the 600 due to the lack of a composite/s-video cable with the 650. However, if the cable is now going to be included with the 650, a quick order change might be needed.

That is the question.

Of course I have to wait until I get home to know if I have an open PCI slot. Got lots of PCIe slots and like the Boggy Old Creature, I will likely be too late to get one dongle/cable or not.

I thought I was buying an ATI card?

Look this is still a great deal...but if its a Diamond TV Wonder HD card then why dont you advertise it as such rather than advertising as an ATI card? You should say its a Diamond TV card with an ATI chipset if you wish to be truthful. Getting to that truth by having to wade through multiple blog pages is pretty sad. Please correct or clarify the product web page.

If you plan to use Windows Media Center then any Windows Media Center remote will work. Purchase a remote that include an IR receiver (most should).

This is the one I have which I'm happy with:

I'm in Chicago and get 48 channels OTA (and I haven't rescanned in a while.) YMMV, but to say that OTA is just "5 major networks" is to speak from ignorance.

I'm probably going to be using Mediaportal still, but it supports MCE remotes. I still have the receiver from my old remote, but I don't know if it's really worth trying to find a remote without one in relation to how much cheaper it would be. Thanks for the remote suggestion, looks a lot like the one I had :-p

I don't have the windows version, but I've been really happy with Beyond TV's software. I just bought a second card to record two channels at once.

joehrule wrote:Does anyone know of a DVR software program (be it the one that comes with this card or another) to be used with this that is easy to use for recording clear QAM channels broadcast over cable (i.e. FREE HD channels on cable)? Doesn't have to be Windows Media Center "easy", but I've tried this with another brand in the past and the software was horrible...wouldn't trust my must-see shows/games with it at all.

The distinction isn't what it used to be historically when thinking about ATI / ATI chipset cards. ATI is now an AMD company - they license their reference card spec to other OEMs but do not market cards without cobrand anymore.

see the manufacturers page on AMD for the ATI TV Wonder HD 600 PCI and click "Compare prices for ATI TV Wonder TV tuners." (you'll get this: http://wheretobuy.amd.com/us-en/tvtuners.html)

Diamond isn't mentioned in the title for efficiency/clarity sake, not for marketing purposes. (see box pics on front page above specs as well for reference)

I have used the 650 for about three years now. It is wonderful for analog cable but only works on Windows platforms, best with media center. Tried to write a linux driver for it but failed and others provided did not work after compiling. Great price otherwise for the 650.

If you have the ability to take the panel off the side of your computer, know how to plug something into a wall socket, and are functionally capable with a phillips screwdriver, then you've got what it takes.

It's really as simple as opening your case and finding where to insert it. The PCI slots are almost always towards the bottom of the motherboard, and should line up with the opening slots along the back. They are also typically white. All you have to do is find the slot it fits in, and make sure the cable connectors are sticking out of the back of the computer. Secure it with a small screw to the frame of the computer case, close the case, and install the drivers for it and you should be good to go.

Close the computer case, of course.

Just a quick question on whether model number confusion has been cleared. When I orded the PCIe i clicked the button with model TVW650PCIE, and the order review and confirmation both had TVW650PCIE, and my screenshots have TVW650PCIE. My online invoice now has this showing as TVW600PCIE instead.

I know alot of details about these products have been challenged and issues are being looked into. Am I going to be shipped the TVW600PCIE or the TVW650PCIE?

Sure - any remote will work, as the capture card doesn't care...the software you use to drive it will care a little. I have the ATI remote...it's still in the box. I got a Firefly remote when I bought BeyondTV, and I love it - MUCH easier to customize (edit an xml file and restart). You can also use a cordless mouse (the Firefly remote has a mouse mode, but it's not as good as a real mouse).

Yes, there is a breakout box/cable. Where are you seeing audio inputs for the composite or S-video?

Just bought a Cable AIW 128 INPUT (purple adapter) from ebay - item 360215719132 - This is the cable WOOT stole (I mean left out) of the card package. I Paid 8.99 (buy it now) + 5.00 shipping. Didn't spend much time looking at prices since I figure the rest of you guys would be breathing down my neck and bid this up, but this poor schlub might have more of them. Just search for my auction and send him a message (here comes the deluge). Or, you can wait for Woot to disappoint and then find it.

quality posts: 0 Private Messages Splicer1

No breakout box/cable, then I have no need for the 650 as I only want it for the capability of transferring 8mm camcorder tapes to DVD and need that cable. But if I have to pay $23 + shipping, the bargain is gone. I can buy a DVD recorder off eBay in that case. I will need to cancel, as I suggest any and all 650 buyers do if they will be using this feature.

When does BigD think we will know if the box/cable comes with? If it needs to be canceled then I would like to cancel before it gets shipped in the first place. This is for a Christmas present to myself, so I can make DVD's for my wifes b-day in January.
