Is this Mac compatible? Something like this would be super-useful for some of my old VHS cassettes at home.

From the website:

VCR 2 PC was designed for use with PCs running Windows, and is not compatible with Macintosh computers at this time. However, the finished files created with the included software can play on a Macintosh using QuickTime 8.

Do you get those lines that VHS can sometimes make on your TV screen with a converter to your computer?

This is a great price. According to pricegrabber.com the lowest is around 80.00. Next to Woot that is. Great way to get those old VHS tapes of old family reunions over to your computer. Way to go Woot! to get this price.

Yo, over here!

Will this player defeat Macrovision, thats the method that keeps folks from copying VHS tapes that makes the copies unwatchable.

No Matter where you go, there you are!!!!

Got one in my Santa's baby of the cosmos... Easy to install, easy to use. Probably the easiest way to move VHS to your computer.

Easy to use, and great price, but only fair quality of transfer.

Audio is Mono only, and not HQ, either; you can see it in the photo of the output ports.

I'm supposed to buy something? But we're having so much fun with things as they are, I don't want to ruin it!
Purchases: 18 / 11 (nobody cares what, so I won't tell you);
Brownies of Cannabis: 1 / 12 (Thanks, Wootalyzer! -- would it help if I called them something else?).

If you already have a good VCR you should consider using the money on a video capture card that could be used for much more than just VHS tapes.
For example: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3584099&SRCCODE=GOOGLEBASE&cm_mmc_o=VRqCjC7BBTkwCjCECjCE

This would have been nice to have 3 weeks ago when I had to use my Tivo to convert all my VHS to Digital. Only took me 3 full days to do about 12 hours of VHS.

I know with audio cassettes you used to be able to record with high speed dubbing to copy quicker and the output was virtually flawless. Is this capable of recording at a high speed, or will you have to record at real-time (SLOOOOW)

In this digital age, it's almost worth it to buy the new media rather than WAIT for the old media.

Most any question that will come up can be answered by reading the previous sellout.woot discussion from the last time this was sold.

What resolution does this record the VHS into?

WOOTSUPPP!!

quality posts: 12 Private Messages WOOTSUPPP!!

I only see one audio input/output connector.
Does this mean my stereo tapes will not be converted to stereo thru USB?
Using the built in tape player or another source?

Got it from this. ^

I love it, it works well, and all the drivers and such are online, so you don't even need a CD drive for the CD that comes with it.

It converts pretty well, although it plays sound while you convert [haven't figured a way to mute the program] and it converts real time.

It's best to leave out to convert a movie on the computer while you go out or do something else. Even better if you got hours of recording of a show on a tape.

The UI is real nice and simple. It also converts videos from camcorders using jacks.

I'd read the old sellout.woot, it's chock full of info.

It converts to mpeg. It's easily convertible, so I don't see why that's a large problem.

I got this last time, it works great! It doesn't come with a video editor just the recorder..{you need to find something to cut and combine} but the picture quality is the same as it was on the tape. Finally I get to throw away all of my tapes! I will be passing this one around the family. great item, never thought I'd buy a VCR again.

I purchased ION's USB turntable a while back. (before being offered on woot, even)
It was a GREAT turntable and very easy to use, I'm sure this is too...
Just make sure you research the formats it copy's to.
Will it work with Win7? Does it crash with Vista? If I have XP, am I safe? Why do I have 98 and nothing works anymore?
That being said, My turntable is Linux compatible ;)

i really hope this works! if it has any degree of quality, i'll be a very happy camper--it isn't fun to move dozens of boxes full of VHS tapes, and i'm just not willing to let all of my old TV programming go. knowing that i have every episode of "law and order" commercial free helps me to sleep at night, and since only 8 of the 20 seasons are out on dvd right now, i hope this converter keeps me deep in dreamland for years to come.

so wootchawootchawootchawant?! you're so funny with that money that you flaunt...

ION makes neat stuff.

Too bad they don't worry about putting quality into that stuff.

I take it that it is not HiFi Stereo, or even Linear Stereo. Just Mono.

traewatkins wrote:Will this convert PAL .... Id love to get a cleaner rip of my Song of the South VHS

According to the website there is a PAL version. This ain't it.

From the maunal: "A VCR 2 PC purchased in the US will only play NTSC tapes. If the VCR 2 PC is purchased outside the US in a country that uses the PAL system, only PAL tapes will playback"

Running it on a Vista Home Basic on a Netbook currently.
On Amazon, one person noted it worked with 7.
It's XP compatible, not sure about 98. :P

@Superninja: It's perfectly fine, it keeps quality, and if you're looking for something that converts VHS to HD video files, tell me when you find one.

@Audiorents: Yea, somewhere in the sellout.woot topic, it states it's mono
