Does this come pre-loaded with the "LOTR Fan Film" described in the writeup, or do we have to go to sellout.com for that?

I have a HP DV4 series entertainment notebook with a Core 2 Duo and the cooling fan is really loud. I have read complaints from other people as well about the noise from their HP entertainment laptops. Unfortunately fan-controlling programs like Speedfan does not work with the HP BIOS.

To all the number pad aficionados out there, I ask... Do you buy these 17" gaming laptops for mad late night Excel data entry sessions?

A friend of mine has one. Be advised it's really large and heavy. You will not want to be carrying it around every day, unless you're training for something.

I'm supposed to buy something? But we're having so much fun with things as they are, I don't want to ruin it!

this reminds me of the $650 hp hdx16t deal that i got in on... 1080p, bluray, 2.2 duo intel... but i have the nvidia with hdmi... great box so far.. found my first dead pixel...

this is my first HP (second compaq) and it's pretty solid (win7 vs vista is part of the reason)

2 questions:

1. does this have those glossy feel keys? i don't really like those.

2. looks like there are 3 ports where you would plug in headphones and a mic...what's the 3rd one for?

If this had a tv tuner it might make a good HTPC.

For all those late-comers that will bash the Blu-Ray on a 1600x900 screen - go search the web and realize that 1080p is indistinguishable on a screen smaller than 32".

That means - this 17" screen with Blu-Ray is just as good as a 32" screen. And the HDMI port means it can pump 1080p signal just fine to a capable flat 1080p panel.

The human eye has limitations; it's not the laptop's hardware specification.

Great price for the specs.

Excellently built. One caveat is the power adapter that some of the HP are problematic. We have two and one of them is dead after only a year.

No great replacement available unfortunately.

Here is the link to the 90W the 60W ac adapter do not have any better reviews:

http://www.shopping.hp.com/product/computer/categories/ac_adapters/1/accessories/NW199AA%2523ABA;HHOJSID=TlhCL2qCzyKlN2CL0dJmY22l0D3NpqlPp2pLhQxLQKgBrppqMQSm!1492049792

I question why this huge laptop only takes a 60W. Our dual core 15 inch laptop takes a 90W.

BTW... HP laptops run very hot. I don't know about this one in particular but the DV5z's will burn your skin.

PEACE

There are 2 headphone ports. No need for headphone splitters if you're watching a movie with a friend

Important question: Does this output audio over HDMI, or just the video.

Otherwise you'll watch your Bluray in HD, but have to listen in stero. If it doesn't include the audio in the HDMI signal you'd have to connect with a 3.5mm -> RCA stereo cable. I'm not even sure how many home theater receivers can do this (watch video from one source and listen to audio from another), let alone how many people will be able to figure out how to do it correctly.

EDIT to make this more clear:
HDMI can carry audio and video - that doesn't mean it always does especially on cheap/older video cards or chipsets.

Read the Wikipedia section on HDMI in PCs.

This was a big issue when I was thinking of building an HTPC a few years ago.

Product Description wrote:8-Cell Lithium-Ion battery for up to 5 hours and 15 minutes run time

Why bother with the 1/4 hour - just say 5 hours and be done with it. The last 15 minutes will be unproductive since it will complain constantly about what little power you have left.

The keys are a little slick/soft, but still very usable. The number pad on the right side is a frickin' life saver if you do any sort of data entry at all.

I currently have a dead HP Laptop, and I was planning on getting a new motherboard for it. Should I do that, or spend the extra $200 for this refurbished notebook?

Or should I just stay away from HP all together? Decisions, decisions...

Fun fact: HDMI is two things: The video signal that your DVI monitor uses, and audio. Many laptops and desktops only output VIDEO over HDMI, meaning you'll need to specially configure your home theater receiver (good luck figuring it out if you're not good with electronics, I'm not even sure how many can even show video and audio from different sources)

Video settings and audio codecs are built in. The output is to the HDMI cable (sound and video) the home theather receiver is in charge of dephycering it. We have no problem with either output to tv directly.

Actually, it's indistinguishable if you're sitting several feet away. Since many people will watch a laptop from a lot closer (say, on their laps), it is possible to see a difference.

Still, the picture should be quite nice.

Read some reviews about laptop breakdowns first. According to at least 3-4 different sources, HP has the highest breakdowns of the major brands. Asus, Toshiba and Sony, in that order, have the fewest.

They include 2 headphone ports so you have a better chance of plugging headphones into the correct port.

I have a very similar model and I LOVE it. I may be a minority here, but I really like the slick keys too. I've been using this (earlier model) for over a year now and the build is REALLY solid. Plus the slick keys don't wear down like some of the cheaper ones do.

I think I'm going to pull the trigger and buy this one. Well worth the upgrade.

Not on this laptop he wasn't, this video card can't handle new games, and DEFINATELY nothing like Mass Effect 2.

Many computers will only output the video over HDMI and not the audio, so it's not a question of the receiver since there's no audio for it to decode.

Thanks for the answer!
