Thanks about the cord length. One more thing. Is it easy to remove from and put back into the mount on case people shorter than me can properly take vids or does the camera adjust enough?

The one, the only... XKape

Does it download like the kindle?

My fridge is aluminum up front. I'll just use duct tape.

I would recommend letting it cure for 24 hours.

The specs mention battery type CR2032. Is that just for keeping the clock and calendar correct?

bought this the last time it was on woot and it broke 5 minutes after turning it on. I ended up sending it back to the manufacturer (11 bucks shipping) to get it fixed and am still waiting for it. fakon.

Will this do photo slideshows? That is, can I use this as just a regular photo frame?

I guess one could check the power requirements and then fabricate a battery power supply (e.g., a 9V battery or 4 AA batteries) to power it. That seems far better than being chained with a cumbersome cord.

Rant: What's up with people asking about video quality? Come on people, this is a convenience item that goes a step further than outdated audio memo makers. This uses video. Quite cool I think. Who gives a rat's pitoot about video quality.

What, you want to play movies on it, while getting your couch potato trail mix for the long trek back to the sofa?

I know, I know, for $30 you want a TFT display, external A/V connectors, an HDMI port and at lest 8GB internal storage, and for good measure, an SDHC slot that can handle at least 32GB chips.

And while Woot is at it, they should quit being skinflints and toss in a free 32GB SD chip.

I am in for one. I am going to mount it on the toilet wall so I can talk to myself. Beats reading magazines. Also plan to use it as a toilet diary so I can memorialize major events.

Here's how I attached the message center to my refrigerator:

My fridge isn't very tall, so the unit is in the upper left corner next to the hinge. The thin power cord runs up the back of the unit and across the freezer door hinge and is hard to see. I DIY'd the mount, however. The unit comes with a rectangular, plastic mounting "plate" for walls where two holes may be drilled. Two protruding nubs on the plate lock into receiving holes on the back of the message center. (Yes, I realize that this sounds like biology class.)

I drilled a new, single hole in the center of this plate. Next, I took a hook from one of those shoe racks you hang over a closet door. Mine had a flat, J-shaped hook bent at 90 degree angles to be flush the the top of the door. I bent down the curly end that used to hold the shoe rack. I drilled a hole in the center of the 1.5 inch-wide hook and ran a tiny nut and bolt through the hook and the message center's mounting plate.

The hook is the exact right size to hold onto the top of the freezer door. I slid the message center into place and it was secure! (I did add two little adhesive-backed foam rubber pads to keep the unit snug and prevent it from teetering on it's single bolt.) The advantage of the single bolt is that it's easy to level the unit.

I just don't trust the very thin two-sided tape that comes with the device...

I hope this is helpful.

I picked this thing up a couple of Wootoffs ago. The LCD and camera are passable but the microphone performance is so poor that it makes it impossible to understand the video messages. The firmware is clearly a little under developed; as an example, the video displayed while recording is at the wrong aspect ratio (it stretches to fill the screen), but plays back in 4:3 (the proper ratio).

This is admittedly pretty minor, but the dry erase marker was dried out already when I opened up the box. It just compounded my negative experience.

They did have some good ideas; you can input the names of people of your household and leave messages for particular people, but if you can't make out the words that are being spoken, this thing is pretty much an expensive whiteboard that requires a cord. If you want to show pictures, spend the money on a digital frame instead; you'll be much happier with the picture quality.

Try again Audiovox; my roomies and I were excited at the prospect of this device but you failed to deliver a usable product.

Anyone happen to know if the power adapter supports 220 volts? Or is it 110V only?

If someone answers this I'm buying it:

If it can do slideshow, how fast can I make the slideshow? I'm looking for 1-2 seconds fast.

I want to use this a work and if there's something important have the screen flash something like INFORMATION in black and white. Would that work?

EDIT: Answer is 5, 10, and 30 seconds for the slideshow. Almost fast enough.

Per the manual, the battery will only keep the clock and your stored data while the unit is unplugged.

It must be plugged in to work.

It's been in my office ever since then. I should just sell it.

$10 plus shipping!! LOL

I'll probably eBay it, but seriously biggest waste of money.

I bought this item the last time it was offered. I love it. I took it to work and use it to communicate with my employees. They like it as I can address messages to them specifically by name. Even the people who are a little camera shy like to see the messages left for them even if they don't use it themselves. The camera is not good quailty but this item works great and today I bought three more. Woot Woot!

Didn't we decide on the previous woot that this wouldn't work well on a fridge at all because of the power cord? I'm just saying...but that's the manufacturer's problem and not woot!'s!

I bought this last time from Woot. I managed to get this on the fridge door with the wire hidden pretty well.

No the audio and video is not super quality, but we've had a lot of fun with this in our house.

The pictures montage is nice... but this doesn't handle pictures taken vertically well. (ie: if you held the camera sideways) I had to re-format and crop a few times to get it right.

I bought 3 of these previously and installed one at my house on the wall near my desk. I use it all the time, loaded with pictures of the grand kids in the internal memory. It turns on at 7 am and off at 10 pm. It's been great so far. Gave one to each of my kids and they also enjoy them. For the price..........it's worth it. Almost tempted to buy 3 more as everyone who comes to my house thinks it's neat.

I bought this for my kids because they played with a video recorder in a museum and enjoyed it. They did not enjoy this because it took too many steps to record and watch a video and the buttons are hard to push. So I tried it in the kitchen and found it simply was never used by anyone, including me. Nobody wanted to bother going through the tedium of creating and reviewing messages because you have wade through layers of menus and screen selections. The interaction design on this is nil. Stay away unless tedious and annoying things tantalize you for some reason.

Can I use this as a cheap video player for long car rides for my kids? i.e load up a video on an SD card, plug it into my ac converter and let them watch lion king during our trip? or is there some technical hurdle that wont allow this?

Could someone please answer the repeatedly asked question about supported video formats? The manual is mute. Many of the firmware-challenged picture frames are motion jpeg only. If that is the case here this is truly junk. Does the firmware even have a "play video" option?

First of all THIS IS A GREAT THING! I got one last time and it has been running continually since then. The A/V functions, message and calendar all work just as they should. I mounted mine on the kitchen wall, (the unit has every imaginable mounting ability you can think of), and use it to display my photos from a 4GB micro SD card in an adapter. I also tested the internal memory for several weeks and it also works great. My wife uses the countdown timer and alarm for cooking...We really like it!

I bought one of these on a previous woot. It arrived defective. Once booted up and warmed it stays on for about 5 seconds at a time and black for minutes in between. I had to pay to ship it back to them in NJ to get it fixed. It isn't heartwarming to have to pay more than expected and wait many weeks longer to get what you thought you were getting at a deal and soon. We are using it now and while no high-fidelity gadget it doesk give a fun way to leave messages for the gadget minded household.

I wonder if there is a way to have it blink or somehow indicate that there is a video message for today (based on the calendar). For example, I record a birthday greeting for my wife...will she only know about it if she goes to the calendar?
