We've had an exilim for over 4 years now and it's been great, but doesn't support SDHC so I'm in for one to upgrade.

Thanks.

It's not going to replace your camcorder. And it's not even close to quality of a Flip.

We watch it on our 17 inch laptop monitor, though, and it's decent.

with my 64-bit version, I just throw the card into the card reader on my computer. Easier anyways then bothering with plugging in and turning on the camera for download.

I would like to know of the quality of its macro capabilities, are they good? is it worth it?

my situation is that im going to the Sonoran Desert to document Sacred plants of native americans and wanted to be able to take macro pictures of each plant. quality is a concern, but so is the reliability of the camera because I am going to be hundreds of miles away from any technical support for weeks. you may ask why i dont get a known legit camera for my task, but im a poor college student.

I've had this exact camera for about a year and am already looking for a new one. It's absolutely falling apart, and I took great care of it. My zoom sticks and one of the buttons for scrolling through pictures/the menus no longer works and registers as the up button. The battery life is also terrible...I had to charge it every single day while I was on vacation with only what I'd say was moderate use. Also the battery no longer pops out like it's supposed to and sticks so I basically have to pry it out every time I charge it.
I wouldn't recommend it to anybody.

This is an issue with all optical zoom P&S cameras. Interfere with lens travel and they will run off the rails. It isn't any different from any other brand/type.

When it comes to mechanical things your average person is in spoon. Maybe a warranty is the way to go if you are not careful with things and the company will honor it. But zoom lens mechanisms don't just break by themselves. keep them clean and never let them get bumped when they are moving out or whacked when they are deployed and they'll last.

Oh, and don't drop them. These cameras have moving parts and DO NOT like being dropped. I'm surprised any warranty would cover this. If it does, they are going to lose a lot of money as many cameras develop this same problem -sometimes it's because the battery is low and doesn't have enough juice to run the lens out on dirty rails but people are too daft to try a new $5 battery...

What is the maximum SD card this will take...does anyone know?

I've read the entire manual and can't see where it says what the maximum is. It just says "SD or SDHC memory card."

Right now the maximum size SDHC is 32Gb and I don't see why this wouldn't take that if it takes any SDHC. But I would go out on a limb and say that this camera will take any SD card that costs less than the camera itself.

This Camera was just announced last March at the PMA 2009 Trade Show in Las Vegas and showed up in stores a bit later. The SDHC 2.0 format has been around much longer than that. If this camera CAN'T take the 32Gb SD cards then Casio just dropped the ball here.

I just bought a Casio EX-Z33 as a second camera, how does this compare?

I used to have a Casio Exilim EX-Z80. I sold it on eBay after it was very well used... because I thought I wanted to upgrade. I bought a 10MP Olympus on black friday.. and I HATE it.

My favorite thing about my previous Casio was that it had an "eBay" shooting mode. Automatically made lower resolution pictures... it was handy. That, and the fact that I dropped it on the floor about 5 times and it still worked perfectly.

So, needless to say, I'll be selling the Olympus that I've used less than 10 times on eBay, and I wooted one of these earlier today.

Heh. That's the primary reason I can't Woot this. I came very close a few hours ago but decided that the purple was way too light and showy for my taste. Dark purple is okay but not this pinkish purple. Even red is fine. And I'm a New Age sensitive male who loves chick flicks, cries at movies (more so than my girlfriend), fawns over my kitty, has stuffed animals, many g.ay friends, etc. But a pink camera ... no way!

It says purple, but it shows pink. I need a camera, but I don't want to haul around a pink one. Purple is slightly less emasculating. Perhaps I am color blind or my idea of purple is much different than others.

I have a similar Casio Exilim. I had lots of problems with the battery. The battery would short out if left in the camera too long without use. If you go extended periods (>2 weeks) without using the camera, you had to take the battery out. I went through 4 batteries in one year. Luckily, Casio's customer service was extremely helpful. They said they were aware of the problems with the batteries and sent me a new one at no charge each time. When my latest Casio battery bit the dust and I had to get a 4th (my warranty was expired) I went to Batteries Plus and got one by Rayovac. The Rayovac battery doesn't seem to have the shorting problems that the Casio batteries had, but if it does Batteries Plus also has a 1-year warranty on all their batteries.

Also, another downside is that you have to have to remove the battery to charge it and every time you put the battery back in the camera you have to reset the date and time. It bugs me.

I had a 5MP Casio Exilim that I got several years ago. I think it lasted about 3 years and ~5000-10000 photos. The tiny screws on the bottom came out and disappeared one by one. After this, the ribbon cable for the LCD came loose, so I could not see what I was taking pictures of. I opened it to try to fix it, but ended up damaging more things and just sold it on eBay as broken for parts. When I did have the camera, though, it took excellent pictures and was very fun to use. I would recommend it to anyone even with its reliability issue. I've had friends with similar cameras of different brands that didn't even last a year, so 3 years must be good for a digital camera used that much.

So if you buy a spare battery, and swap batteries instead of waiting for the first one to recharge, will the camera hold the settings for the few seconds it takes to swap them...?

How can you tell if it sold out or not the next day?

I'm new to woot. My GF usually does all the wooting in the family but I had to jump in on this camera in case it was gone before she got home. Is there a way to see? I'm only interested. Maybe it will be re-wooted in the future?

It did not sell out (though it was very close!). You can always tell from the #1 page in the forum entry for the item (ala here), it has all the neat-o stats on a sale.
