scorp21103 wrote:And you too are mostly correct. You got the specs for USB pretty well, but to say that the car adapter could not possibly output what USB can is ludicrous! Most vehicles have a 10A fuse on the cigarette lighter/power outlet. You could comfortably draw 8A without blowing the fuse. A stock 5 volt linear voltage regulator, like the LM7805, can accept up to 35V as input and provide regulated 5V at 1 amp. Well within the USB battery charge spec and even higher than device draw spec. With a special circuit arrangement called a "crowbar" or "current bucking" arrangement you could get about 3A safely out of that LM7805 1Amp regulator (still at 5 volts regulated). Put a good heatsink on that regulator and you could probably get 5A out without risk. The total part count is about 3 parts stock arrangement (2 capacitors, 1 regulator), 8 parts for the crowbar arrangement (3 cap, 1 reg, 1 power transistor, 2 power resistors, 1 high current silicon diode). No gimmicks here, just electronics know how.

DANG IT!!!

Why couldn't these have sold out right away. I made it through the impulse to buy time period. You know that 5 minutes where you go "oh look at how fun those are" and then realize there is no use for them at your house.

But there they sat just staring at me, calling to me "Buy Me, Buy Me, Buy me".

I got up walked around said "I don't need you, flashing red and blue woot lights".

Came back and they were still there calling out, "You haven't bought anything from this Woot-off, you should buy me, Buy Me, BUY ME!"

So now i will be receiving 3 in the next 5 to 10 days....

Buyers Remorse... I think not. I will find a good use for these, that is my challenge.

The Black and Decker portable power units from the April Fools wootoff two years ago will run them fine.

Woot only ships within the US. Shirt.woot will ship to other countries. Wine.woot only ships to those states in the US that will allow wine to be sold on the internet.

Don't count on it. I've been here since 7/08. I've gotten one. Just one. And it had two High School Musical alarm clocks in it. They almost made the Sansa not worth it.

Weird - earlier in the thread, the word ski ttles came through unfiltered.
But now it's being filtered as pork rinds.

This site is so wacky - I love it!

I bought a pair of the normal orange Woot lights during the last Woot-Off. They are pretty bright, but the orange light covering for each light in the pair I got was weirdly scratched (like someone had scraped a hot soldering iron across the sides.) The motors are noticeable but not terribly loud, just enough to let you know they are running.

All in all, this is a fun item, and the laughs and stares it gets at the office are definitely worth the small price.

P.S. These work nicely with an Apple iPod/iPhone USB power adapter cube if you don't want to tie up a USB adapter on your computer.
