Anyone know if this model can do a good, consistent omanual focus? TIA!

carmispicer wrote:30fps = blurry if it is an action seen (soccer, horse racing, track)

30 FPS has nothing to do with blurry video. The standard frame rate for movies, tv shows, and just about everything is 29.99 FPS. The blurry-ness of video comes from the actual shutter speed of the camera. in photography for hand held shooting 1/60th of a second is considered the minimum to eliminate the motion blur from shaky hands. according to the stats this camera will go from 1/30 to 1/10,000 while shooting video so it could generate blurry video in theory on its lowest shutter speed available and depending on the subject 1/10,000th should be enough to catch formula-1 tires mid-race quite clearly.
hope that helps a little.
here's a wikipedia article about it.

Does this camera have an audio input? Looks like a great camera, but using only a built-in mic wouldn't be ideal for some situations.

Good description of a totally useless focusing device. Thank you! I currently own a Samsung HD video camera and it too uses the same manual focus joystick control. It's impossible to keep a moving object (or even a stationary one) in perfect focus, and the autofocus isn't much better. Prosumer HD camera, here I come... $$$$$$$

What's the alternative?

The Kodak Zi6 HD Pocket Video Camera (similar to a Flip), which I bought here on Woot for $69, has HD at 60 fps. Incredibly smooth video. Also has 30 fps HD mode, as well as VGA.

And if you want a point-and-shoot, the Casio Exilim EX-FS10 offers an astonishing 1,000 fps burst video mode (imagine how much memory it uses) at reduced resolution. Great for science experiements. It can also do the standard 30 fps/60 fps in HD. Amazingly, I found it recently for about $109 NEW.

Far from it. I shoot video of radio controlled model aircraft. They move fast, cover a huge range of distances and you usually only get one chance to get that cool shot. At a distance no video camera autofocus system can pick out the model from the background and the focus "hunts", blurring the image in a most unprofessional manner.

FLIP vs XACTI

akeenersense wrote:How does this compare to a flip?

I assume that you mean the HD Flip...

Regardless, they satisfy different needs. The Flip and similarly flat rectangular cameras (i.e. Kodak Zi6/zi8, Creative Labs) are incredibly convenient. They fit well in any shirt pocket, and offers easy viewing of videos without needing to adjust anything. And you can shoot within seconds. However, simplicity comes at a price. The Flip, especially, has virtually no adjustable features. Nor can you pause while recording so you often end up with hundreds of little clips. And those small cameras are fixed focus and has no optical zooming. Digital zooming is generally awful.

The Sanyo is based on real camcorders. It's bulkier, and you'll need to pull out the screen to do most things, but you get lots of features like auto-focusing, exposure levels, and 30x optical zooming. And although the Sanyo doesn't offer it, many of these camcorder style recorders also have optical stabilization, which is superior to digital stabilization. This Sanyo only has digital stabilization, but it's still superior to what you'd get on the best Flip. Many of the Flip-like recorders offer no stabilization at all, although several HD models do provide digital stabilization.

Finally, some Flip-like recorders don't have the ability to use memory cards, i.e. the Flip Mino is limited to built-in memory.

Email service@woot.com ASAP. The best way to do this is to Forward them the confirmation email you received after placing your order. That email has your username and order number. They've always been pretty generous in terms of adjusting or canceling orders. They will generally reply within 24 hours although weekend requests may not be answered until Monday.

If worse comes to worst, simply refuse delivery. Woot will refund your total purchase price, including shipping. Just don't abuse the system!

I bought this when it was offered last wooting.

I've received a lot of interest about this camcorder since I've had it. Most often, people comment on how small this camcorder is. When they see the video displayed on a monitor, they love the high resolution.

This thing really shines when shooting outdoor video; indoor video, on the other hand, leaves something to be desired.

You're gonna need an SDHC card, too. You can get about 15 minutes with the included card.

My brother even liked this camera so much that he told me to buy him one when it comes up for sale, so.. I guess I'm in for one!

I don't have the patience to do any authoring so I can't recommend anything feature-rich. But if you simply want to convert your videos into viewable DVDs with as little work as possible, I've always relied on ConvertXtoDVD3. It'll convert virtually anything to DVD, including RMVB (Real Media) which is rarely used in the US. You simply drag the files to the program and press Go. The quality is excellent as long as you don't pack too much. But if quality isn't too important, you can even squeeze about 10 hrs worth of video onto one DVD an d it's still very watchable.

The downside is that there really isn't all that you can do in terms of chapter insertion, fonts, etc. You can adjust things but if you want to really customize things, look elsewhere. On the plus side, ConvertXtoDVD3 is relatively fast.

BTW, if you simply want to play the videos on your own TV, many DVD players can read AVI files directly without conversion. I'm not sure, but I assume that the Sanyo uses the AVI container and a standard codec. In this case, simply copy the files directly onto a DVD without converting.

Good point. I generally just reply or forward the confirmation email that Woot sends me with each order. All the info is there.

I prefer sending an email to the Write Us because email gives me more control, i.e. I have a record of the email in my outbox.

I bought this last time it was on here. Cheap camera for messing around with my friends. i filmed my friends skateboarding so you can see how it handles fast motion.

the youtube video is compressed to an mp4 format, but the raw video was actually very good quality.

i am pleased with the camera, especially for the price

I don't have the Sanyo so I'll only speak in general terms. In addition to increased graininess, low light performance generally also means a lower frame rate. That means choppier videos which is really noticeable when there is fast movement.

I'm a Mac guy and don't know a lot about video formats.

The video format on the description page reads: "Video: Conforms to ISO-standard MPEG-4 AVC/H.264." The specs also indicate that the camera is compatible with Win XP, Vista and 7. Perhaps the Mac won't recognize the camera if it is USB connected, but it should be able to recognize the SD card. So my question is... can a Mac read, edit, or write video files in this video format? Or do we need special software? (Commercial or open source would be fine...)

Any advice to a guy who can make RAW, TIFF and JPG jump through hoops but doesn't know a thing about video would be much appreciated.

I am in the market for a video camera too, but I had a bad experience with a Sanyo tv, which I took back and got a Sony, (really wanted a Samsung but couldn't afford it) so I am a bit at odds whether to go for this or not. I really like the extra battery, but I too would like something that shoots 1080 but again the price is great... so like I said, I'm at odds. Anyone know of anything else around 200 right now?

I bought one of these the first it came up on Woot.

I'm very disappointed with it and I recommend you not waste your money on it. It doesn't focus worth a damn. Pictures are blurry in the wide angle range all the way through highest zoom, even on a steady platform.

I purchased it solely for the 30 times optical zoom which was a mistake.

I also have an SVP T-500, and although it's configuration is slightly different and only 3 times optical zoom, it's a much better camera (sharp well focused pictures) for a similar price.
