This is really beautiful. But hardly a bargain price. - ok its a bargain for the brand, but there are some very lovely butcherblocks out there for much less.

I'm hoping Woot has made a typo... because a if this is a John Woo chopping block with samurai blood stain and gun powder etching, I'd buy it for twice the price and feel soo nice. I don't know who John Booze is.

Now that's a classy thing. Unfortunately for the price I am going to have to stick with my junky plastic one from Target.

Doesn't this seem like the sort of thing the Fight Club Narrator would have in his condo?

It's probably an epoxy that is much harder than the wood, won't seperate as long as you reapply the wax regularly and don't put it in the dishwasher. But as has been said previously, anyone with basic woodworking tools can make the same thing for $15. I made a larger rectangle one for my wife with left over maple from the kitchen cabinet project.

Well, it depends. Does your company like you? If so, yes they would use this. If not, they would likely just use a table and a dull butter knife...

I still don't see the need for an avatar on Woot. It is just more digital information that has to be downloaded and thus slows the loading of the forum pages.

About as useful as this Woot-off is.

Wood is NOT sustainable!!! It is renewable, trees can be grown again, but it is not sustainable. Trees are being cut down faster than we are growing them.

NoodlesKnowles wrote:the best surface to cut on using high quality knives is wood, any other type will dull your knives 100x faster. if maintained properly this would be as non porous as any other cutting board, but it does need a lot more maintenance, kind of like a cast iron pan, great tool, but needs a lot more maintenance than a non stick pan

You are extremely right, I read up more on all of this and I was still under the impression that this was a glorified cutting board.

to those who say they could build their own, I'd challenge you to try. It is MUCH harder than it looks and buying that much walnut would cost you about $30 at a retail lumber dealer anyway.

From the comments, I can tell that most people here, "don't get it". Just like with the knives, which are both amazing and an amazing deal (seriously, *try* good knives once and say that they're not worth it!), this cutting board is arguably worth the money. As for the knives, you should all feel lucky, I cannot "qualify" for the woot! discount as I'm left-handed and have no option but to pay full price, grimacing every time I see how lucky the right-handed, cooking wooters are!

What makes this expensive is that it is end-grain, which affects the durability, flexibility, and softness of the wood. A good cutting board will not dull or ruin your expensive VG-10 knives, such as the Shun knives frequently found here on woot. Furthermore, a good board can last almost as long as a cast-iron pan, that is to say, practically forever.

That said, I know little about walnut boards. I'll do some research in case this board appears again at a later point, or hope that they'll offer a maple version...
