I don't quite know what to say here. I'm sure most of what comes to mind would promptly land me on posting "probation".

I enjoy the fact that it currently is easier to successfully complete your "random" transaction due to the "unaware factor" of many wooters, however, in my opinion it is in pretty bad taste to attempt to "keep all the happy hour bags" to ourselves. It seems quite selfish to me.

You've been here quite a long time now and I don't know how successful you've been in the past. I'd imagine your frustration at not being able to get these is at the root of this idea of yours. I've only been here since the beginning of the year. This is the second time I was successful. I have experienced the futility at trying to score a Bowl of Cereal when all the wooters are wooting... it's a bear.

I love woot now... especially during a woot-off... it's hard to believe that online shopping can actually get the adrenaline pumping. But I'm hooked already. If I had first come to woot and was being actively decieved by other members, I would not have hung around. I would have felt like new members to the club were not welcome.

I'm just as guilty as the next guy during a woot-off when someone pops in on the forums to only ask if they have missed the Book of Crap. I will tell a different lie each time asked to throw them off the scent. I feel they should have to put in the same effort that I do to get one. I'm not sitting there hours on end to be some "whitesquare's" bag lookout. I feel that this behavior is all part of the game though. I would expect to be lied to if the roles were reversed.

Your proposal sounds very unfair to me though. It could discourage new people from embracing woot and ultimately will make woot less successful. That would hurt us all.

I am not a goody two shoes (does anyone still say that?), if you have ever followed me in the woot-off forums you'll know i'm a caustic sob that would cut your throat to win.

If woot suggested that a kitten milkshake at the beginning of a woot-off would somehow help me, I'd be headed for the SPCA.

It is not necessary to hide it. And not cool, really. Most who do not know what the Happy Hour is (yet) probably do not know what "World of Woot" is either, but those who come looking shouldn't be shutout. I'm glad you figured out what the Happy Hour is, but try to keep in mind that this thread was not your only opportunity to figure it out--not be a long shot. You would have figured it out eventually.

I believe that any attempts to hide the thread would just result in fewer participants in the unboxing posts. That means less fun overall. Let's keep the thread titles welcoming, please.

I just wanted to say "case of the Mondays". I actually agree with you. Have a good weekend! I have to go smoke in a bar/restaurant...today is the last day in Michigan to smoke indoors...and I do not even smoke.

To go off on a tangent...

I'm kind of torn on this. I used to smoke but love it now that I don't have worry about stinking like smoke after going to a bar or restaurant. However.... I also believe the free market system could have produced a solution. There were bars that went smoke free before it was set into law. That IMHO is the way to go. People will choose to go elsewhere if other places are offering smoke free. And people have a choice of where they work...smoking or smoke free. I say let the owners decide.

That is completely different. Someone drinking alcohol doesn't directly have an effect on the person next to them. You cannot compare the two.

GO WOOT for sure. I am not a fan of the government's control over such issues. I am really torn on the issue as well. However, when it comes to another person's health, I have no problem with them outlawing smoking in restaurants when someone wants to just enjoy a good meal and not inhale smoke. I don't see the problem with people going outside to smoke...

Indeed. Iowa's Clean Air Act (no smoking) was a fantastic piece of legislation. Many bar owners were overjoyed at the new law. They wanted to make their establishments smoke free, but were unable to due to a loss of business. If anything, outlawing smoking made the market free-er.

I couldn't agree more. My two buddies who own a bar also think the same exact way. Neither of them smoke but were hesitant to make the bar smoke free due to a possible loss in sales.

The worst offenders aren't bars, they're restaurants like Applebees where they put the bar/smoking area in the middle of the restaurant and the non-smoking tables around it. Sure you can't light up in the non-smoking section, but you sure are going to get some lungfulls of tobacky.

Anyone looking for a chuckle should read the bushnell gps thread that was up when happy hour started and our new bags were sold.

It's amazing how many people apparently don't even read the other people's postings and were oblivious to what was happening.

I got a kick out of the fact that Snapster was there at the "magic" time. It seems like he was curious how things were gonna go down.

We were scrambling to buy bags and others were posting things like "will this work with a mac?" lol.

Doubt you have anything to worry about... I've known about the Happy Hours and bags of crap that occasionally show up in them since the first Happy Hour. BUT, this is the first Happy hour Bowl of Cereal I've been able to get (got to Processing and In Line a few times but never won). I did not know about the World Of Woot boards until I asked in the screaming monkey thread where to post stuff like our Bowl of Cereal weights and pictures when they come.

So, if I'm typical, if you don't know about happy hour, you probably won't know much about this forum location either.

My 2 cents on this "is it fair?"

Woot is a good, fun company. They like to spread the goodies out over all their customer base, which is, to me, pretty fair. It's like supermarkets who accept newspaper coupons, and give discounts to frequent shoppers - they're rewarding customer loyalty.

We don't all have the same way of coming to Woot. Some of us use all their access points - web, twitter, rss, etc. Some choose one. It *is* a choice. A lot of people were saying "I don't want to use twitter!", but there are plenty of ways to access happy hour without signing up to twitter.

It's all fair, IMO. And at the end of the day, we come to woot for fun stuff AND good deals, and we get both. I like a little challenge!

On the otherhand, this is my 2nd HH bushel of corn I scored. The last one had 300 bags, and definitley took a couple of minutes to sell out. This one with 1500 was still pretty easy compared to most, but it sold out pretty quick.
I think the happy hour is beginning to catch on, and definitely having it during the woot-off didn't help. Oh well, fair chance for everyone I say.

So, let's see - you found the way to your next BоС from one of these threads, but now that you're in a game, you want to keep everyone else out?

That doesn't sound very nice to me! I may understand somebody who actively tweets, and found this place from twitter by first reading appropriate Woot newsletter, then following woot on Twitter as intended to be upset, that non-tweeting folks are getting alerted. But trying to shut down the very door through which you jumped onto the train seems outright mean if not rude to me!

That is not to mention, that legitimate users won't find the thread unless its name is self-descriptive. And the whole fun of BоC experience is not just getting the goods - it's the whole process, including waiting, then grabbing it, then expecting, and then unboxing, and of course sharing with the community!

I cast my vote for keeping this thread, and all future threads wide open and obvious to the public, with self-descriptive names and encourage everyone to look at fellow wooters hunting for the next BоC as friends, not foes!

Yes, they eat into our chances - but they also add to the fun and raise the satisfaction levels from getting one! The BоC wouldn't have been so fun if you could just go and buy one at your leisure.

Sometimes, one of the items in your box is a letter from Woot (check my sig). It means you get the BIIIIIGGG item. Not every Bowl of Cereal offering includes a letter winner. The letter item comes via FedEx freight in a second shipment. Not every letter is a cool item (again, check my sig). The letter winner has been the guy to get the big TVs or pallet of action figures or pallet of wax.
