Tarantino wrote:People have recommended pcdecrapifier (google it) to uninstall all the trialware that comes with your computer. You can do the same thing with [start] settings/control panel and depending on what OS your using, probably programs & features. You can uninstall whatever you don't want. HOWEVER, do so carefully. You many not know what it is, but it could be important. Uninstall, reboot.

Unless something is not working, leave it alone, driver wise. Unless you're a gamer or avid user of a specific piece of hardware, updating the drivers is best left to experts, or at least a geek. (Go Geeks! woohoo!)

As for the OS, I'm assuming it came with Windows 7. If it did, you're as good as you're gonna get (insert linux joke here). If it's Vista (I'm sorry) but Vista isn't as bad as people make it out to be. It's not great, and Win 7 is better, but Vista is passable.

The only thing I AM going to recommend to do first is to make the backup disks. If you didn't make the backup disk and you repartition (useless on a laptop in my opinion since the largest HD you can get is a 500gb internal, IIRC) [start] programs/ recovery manager / recovery disk creation. (Yours might be in a different place, but that's where my HP put them) If you bust that recovery partition, you'll have to buy a new Windows OS to install.

Doesn't it come with Windows OS CD ? I was counting on reinstall the whole OS as soon as I receive the laptop.

Got mine today... opened it... turned it on... and nothing...... over two hours on the phone with tech-support, and allot of arguing with them about warranties (I didn't buy it through HP) they determined that I need a new hard drive. I.T. said to send it back to them and they put me in touch with the "Sales Dept." They said that they cant help me and sent me back to I.T. So finally I.T. is sending me a new hard drive and star up disk, "free of charge" which I will have to install myself... and if I don't send back the bad hard drive within 3 days I will get charged for drive. OK, 90 day warranty minus the 6 days for shipping. and now for the 5 more day (fingers crossed) for the new hard drive and start up disk, that leaves only 79 days of warranty left. I was hoping to watch some good movies and enjoy a fast computer (for a change), but all I got was a wast of time and money. I guess I get to go to bed annoyed, disappointed, and a hesitant to get anything else on this site.
I'm sorry if this post is a little harsh but I'm am tired of spending good money to get a hassle, runaround and a poor quality good.

Good Night and Good Luck... You will need it

Mine was waiting for me when I got home from work today. It turned on just fine and didn't have even a fingerprint on it. Nice new computer. I purchased a similar hp laptop about 6 months ago, but wanted this one to use with the 37" Vizio I bought from the recent woot-off. I intended for this to be a media center. Gonna stick boxee or XBMC on it and use it as a dvr/netflix/internet/game/blu-ray player.

I was most excited about the blu-ray feature since I never had one before. Tonight I even drove to the nearest store that was still open and purchased a few BDs to play. I get home and hook it up and press play and I get an error. HDCP is serious b.s.

I contacted HP support - spoke with a guy in india who was pretty nice and did what he could to try and figure out how to get it to work. He was unsuccessful. Still - as annoying as it is to get outsourced phone support, I don't think hp's is all that bad relative to other companies.

Anyway - I was able to get the video error to go away, but I can't get the audio to work. I will probably have to buy another piece of hardware. Annoying.

Oh, and I was informed by support that I still have like 101 days left on my warranty somehow.

RoguePope wrote:You're referring to HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection). This is the protocol that determines whether the hardware in place will allow for the playing of copyrighted HD content. HDMI & the GRFX card are compliant, as long as your TV is HDCP compliant, (or whatever you are connecting the TV to via the HDMI cable) NO PROBLEM.

I believe in the case of a laptop, you need to have the path established and live before you start the HD content. (BluRay disk) So make the connections, transfer your viewing to your HDTV, then put the disk in and start the movie!

So I ran into this problem - my Vizio is very much HDCP compliant. Getting the video working was still a challenge anyway because the monitor and the tv had different resolutions. Had to turn off the lcd before playing the BD.

Still, the audio says that it isn't HDCP compatible through the HDMI. I'm thinking this may be due to the downconverting to two speakers? Anyway - this HDCP bull**** is really irritating.

I just got this delivered. When I turn it on sometimes it hangs just before it gets to windowns and won't boot all way. I then have to turn it off and back on. It does this a few times and eventually comes up fine and works fine.

Has anyone else had this problem?

There are no other devices that it should be booting to (no usb drives, nothing in the cd drive).

Thanks.

got mine the other day.
at first i thought it was pretty great.
then when i was sitting on my couch with it, I realized that when the lid moves around the screen cuts in and out.
Contacted HP and they are sending me a coffin to send it back in.
Also, the blu ray player doesn't work out of the box. You have to update the software, but even that isn't very straight forward.
If HP sends me a good replacement I'll be happy I guess.

That's funny. When I talked to them about my warranty they informed me that I only had 45 days left on it... and to get it corrected I would have to fax the warranty dep. a copy of the invoice, but I never got one in the box. All I have is the confirmation e-mail and I really don't think that will work. Witch probably means that by the time the part arrives and I am able to fix it there will be around 38 days left in the warranty. That is quite a bit different from the 90 days that was stated.

Spent a week anxiously awaiting the arrival of this laptop. I've got no sound. I did like 2 hours of steps and still no luck. i'm going to have to send it back. I even reinstalled Windows 7 on it and that didn't fix the problem. SO FRUSTRATING!!!

HP would not let me send it back the next morning in the box they sent it to Woot in to ship to the customer. Now i have to wait 4 days to receive and send back the broken refurbished computer. Plus another 10 business days to fix it than the additional shipping days. So all in all from the date of purchase it will take over a month to receive this product. HP support has been less than accomdodating and has given me plenty of attitude for being upset at receiving a broken product. I'll never buy HP again.

Got mine last week. Rented a Blu-ray movie, hooked up to the TV. Worked perfectly. Even figured out the neat slot to store the remote. Only wish it had the TV tuner on it.

So I got this back from HP. I would say I was actually pretty pleased with how they handled this. Laptop is not doing what it did before, so far no other complaints.

Thought I'd check in and report that my laptop works wonderfully. *knock on wood* There have been no issues so far and I'm very happy with it.

Thanks to all who helped me with the decision.

I guess I can consider myself lucky! I've enjoyed my new HP so far. Just one annoying thing though, when I use my Powerpoint with a projector, my computer will radomly turn off the signal to the projector leaving only what I can see on my computer screen. I then have to reset to allow the projector.

What a hassle since I am in the middle of a class when I use my Powerpoint. I haven't checked to see if the resolution setting on the projector matches the one I am using on my computer. After checking that, I'll report back and tell you how it works.

Be blessed!

This laptop turns out to be a complete piece of garbage.

The Woot offer comes with a 90-day warranty. Standard warranty is 1 year from HP.

If this laptop or other Hp laptops go on sale here again, DO NOT BUY!!!

This is the fifth HP product I have bought that is poorly manufactured, cheaply buildt, and does not work as advertised.

I'm buying a Mac.
