Here is what they go for on amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Apple-touch-Generation-Previous-Model/dp/B001FA1NZK

Most sell for over 200 no matter where you look. So its a good pretty solid deal.

This is about $30 less than the 2nd generation model on amazon.

Tons of reviews on Buzzillions. 4.7 star average (which is insanely good).
http://www.buzzillions.com/reviews/apple-ipod-touch-8gb-3rd-gen-reviews

I do a daily woot blog where I talk about the woot, link to CSEs, find reviews, etc. A few people have told me it's useful. Google "useful linkage" and there it is.

It's not actually physically a 3rd generation. It just has OS 3.0

Very Important:

The 8GB 2nd gen and 3rd gen are identical in every way.

This means you will NOT be able to upgrade this to 4.0 this summer.

Nah, I'm just too tired to read the product description.

Would you prefer a cnet review? (Don't have that one in there, huh? Huh?)

Jake was right. The 8gb 3rd generation iPod Touch's are not as fast as the 32gb and 64gb models. Which means you wont be able to have multi-tasking when iPhone OS4.0 comes out.

Wrong. This 8GB model will NOT run 4.0. It is still a 2G inside, it just has the 3.0 software on it.

Are these things durable? They are so thin and seem extremely fragile. I have a 120g Classic and it has lasted me almost 3 years.

No idea which version this one ships with, but you know you'll at least be able to upgrade it if it doesn't ship with 4; the 1st and second generation iPod touches aren't being given the full iPhone OS 4 upgrade.

So add another 20 bucks... just sayin'... they don't free-upgrade the OS for the Touch, only the iPhone...

One DIRE question....

Is this Jailbreak-able??

joebrooks

quality posts: 7 Private Messages joebrooks

The hardware in the 8GB iPod Touch 3rd generation is actually the same as the 8GB iPod Touch 2nd generation. The only difference between the 2nd and '3rd gen' for the 8GB model is the '3rd gen' comes with the iPhone OS3 software.

iPhone OS 4 will work with this device, but it won't have multitasking.

Let's review.

iPod 1st Gen Devices: iPhone OS 3
iPod 2nd Gen Devices: iPhone OS 4 - No multitasking
iPod 3rd Gen, 8GB Model: iPhone OS 4 - No multitasking
iPod 3rd Gen, 32GB & 64GB Models: iPhone OS 4

Yes. Obviously you cannot do videocalling, but you can make audio calls as long as you have a set of headphones with a mic. And IM works too.

iPhone Developer here. There's a lot of misinformation flying around in these comments about this iPod Touch and iPhone OS 4.0 compatibility, so I just wanted to clear things up. This device *will* be able to upgrade to iPhone OS 4.0 when it is released, but it *will not* support all features of the OS, including multitasking and potentially others. This iPod Touch has the exact same hardware as the second generation iPod Touches, they just continued selling it as a "3rd Gen" iPod Touch to give customers a cheaper alternative with less memory.

Source: http://www.apple.com/iphone/preview-iphone-os/ (see the bottom of the page)

"iPhone OS 4 will work with iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and the second- and third-generation iPod touch this summer, and with iPad in the fall. Not all features are compatible with all devices. For example, multitasking is available only with iPhone 3GS and the third-generation iPod touch (32GB and 64GB models from late 2009)."

Serves him right. Probably the same s.o.b. that makes the decision to put up Bowl of Cereal's during my drive home from work or sneaks them into Happy Hours in the middle of a Woot Off.

But if it'll help I'll send him some Wite-Out. I hear it's a collectible these days and professional writers are all over it!

Not really, but you can run skype on it and some applications allow for text messaging both via wifi. Also people will only be able to call you through skype.

We are a family of 4, and we own 4 iPod touches. When I first got mine, I was thinking that it was nice to have an mp3 player that could also surf the web. Then my wife and I went to the movies, and she dropped the cover to my ebook reader, and couldn't find it in the dark. A nice guy behind us said "don't you have the free flashlight function on your iTouch?" and helped us find the cover.

Of course, you can read ebooks on the iPod touch too.

Later that day we had to drive to an office, and my wife panicked because she didn't know how to get to the address, and had left her GPS at work. iPod touch to the rescue again.

It even has an app ($10) that lets me watch TV broadcasts from my Hava Titanium HD (got it on Woot!).

I was never an Apple fan, but...

that only begins to explain why the iPod touch is my favorite gadget.

My first iPod touch was a 1st gen refurbished model. It worked great for the 2+ years that I had it. Sold the 1st gen it when I got the model for sale here new and think I only lost 50% of its value. It was still in perfect working condition and battery life was still reasonable, so Apple refurbs really do hold up well.
The good: The 3rd gen was a nice upgrade since it has the internal speaker and the volume buttons on the side.
The random: It comes with the voice recording software, but you have to attach a microphone for it to be useful. It's supposed to be faster, but in general I haven't noticed this to be true. It also won't immediately accept input on the password screen when I turn the screen on (have to wait about a second before entering my passcode otherwise it just ignores my finger taps) and the 1st gen didn't do this.
The ugly: The bottom right corner of my screen feels lose and makes some clicking noise when I press on it (proving it's a little lose). The 1st gen didn't do this, and considering it was larger and I never bothered to put a case or screen protector on it I would have expected more problems with that one. The 3rd gen I immediately got a case for and screen protectors, but it seems to have more cosmetic issues already.

And $179 brand new from Amazon. No tax at Amazon vs tax at Apple. Free shipping at both. Bottom line, $30-$40 cheaper at Amazon than Apple depending on where you live.

There are several types of cases that can help if you're prone to drop things, such as a snug-fitting silicone jacket that covers the back, or a leather case with flip cover that protects the whole device.

they are surprisingly durable, nevertheless i would recomend investing in a rubberized case for it and also a screen protector, just dont use it like a football and be careful (as one should with tech, and it will be fine
