Headsets pretty much are speakers. Did you mean to say the headsets have a microphone? Unfortunately, the 8GB model doesn't take a mic, so you're taking about some very lonely skypersations.

p.s. there is a nifty texting app, though. During a recent hospital stay, my cell phone ran out of charge, and I was able to text my wife from my iPod touch.

They are $180 NEW at Walmart...

Need to drop the price a bit more Woot? For $30 more I would have full warranty and a new device.

Wrong. It will run 4.0. I'm running 4.0 on my 2G 32GB right now. What it won't do is multitasking. Only the 1G iPod Touch won't get the 4.0 upgrade.

NOT TRUE!

Apple does not sell this as a 3rd generation iPod touch regardless of what OS they are shipping it with. They continue to sell it but very clearly only label the 32 and 64 GB versions as 3rd generation.

http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_ipod/family/ipod_touch

http://support.apple.com/kb/SP570

Woot has got it wrong and is incorrectly advertising this as a 3rd Generation iPod Touch, which it isn't. The difference isn't just memory; the 3rd gen also comes with BlueTooth 2.1 + EDR.

Its completely worth it. To be honest, I think it makes for an awful ipod. I still have an 80gig classic ipod. However, I've had a gen 1 ipod touch (this one is newer) an I use it daily. The apps available even for free easily make this a great product. I check my email from it before going to bed. Do facebook updates. Check out the woots using a woot app. Can get driving directions using maps. I play games on it all the time. Its a fantastic product.

You CAN use a Headset with this. Any headset that would work on any other iPod will work for this.

You misread my post. You can use a standard headset with 3.5mm jack. What you can't use is a headset with a microphone - those only work on the 32GB and 64GB models.

I have deep, puncture dents on the rear and scratches on the front. I've had it about two years. They're durable enough but not as much as, say, a Blackberry Storm.

iPod Touch 2nd Generation and above can use a headset with mic.

the Wifi on here is the best feature.
you can load your email adresses and check email.
of course you have to have an internet connect and a internet signal to do that, it doesn't work off a 3g or 4g network.
drive around checking maps?
hmm

the music feature is okay, i just wish the volume was louder.
I have the lego speaker from the box of crap as mine is a 1st generation.

That's not what the salesman who sold me the 8GB model told me (I have the 32GB, which came with a headset w/mic). I think you just made the rest of my family very happy!

edit: Looking at Google, I think I see what confused my salesman - the 8GB can't do voice control.

For another 30 bucks you can get a brand new one from Best Buy. That comes with a 1 year warranty, and you can buy another warranty that protects it for 2 years including drops and accidental stuff.

I'd just go with Best Buy on this one.

Apple site is quite clear that the 3g will be able to upgrade to OS4 while the earlier generations will not.

Not all salesmen are as informed as myself. The 32GB 3rd and 64GB both include a headset, and that's probably why he didn't know.

Yup, 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB 2nd gen models can all use a headset. It doesn't need to be the Apple headset either. I've used the headset from my Blackberry Curve and one from a Nokia N800 without issue.

Any 3.5mm stereo headset should work just fine. The only drawback is that you won't have volume controls. Also, there are companies that make microphone adapters now to allow you to use any headphones as a headset.

Mine survived a cringe-worthy drop. The case popped off and the backing is pretty scratched now, but it's certainly still in working order.

Yeah, not really any deal here. Just a standard price for a refurb, older generation Ipod. Can't blame Woot though I have never in my life seen an apple product (even a refurb) marked down to any kind of significant savings. Apple's just expensive.

A Skype-in number and their monthly unlimited calling plan is certainly cheaper than monthly cellular phone service. Worth a shot I think. However, it's limited to where you have WiFi, meaning you couldn't drive and talk on it. I assume as such anyways.

I've used this ipod for several months now, and it is incredibly durable. I can't say how many times I've dropped it and it hasn't even scratched the screen. It will generate a little wear and tear over time, but it's definitely worth the offer here. You could also buy a case for extra protection, but that's unnecessary in my experience.

Probably. But not warranted by Apple. Here are the ones guaranteed to be refurbed by Apple, and they come with the same warranty as new, including the Applecare option for a 2nd year.

http://store.apple.com/us/product/FC086LL/A?mco=MTcxMzIwNDM

Although, as mentioned, the new barely cost more. Usually Apple refurbs are the way to go for iPods, but this one is too close to new in price.
