Received mine on Monday. I gave myself a chance to acclimate to them before I made a decision, so here is my rating.
Pros:
Aesthetics are superb. The fan just looks good. The shape, grill design, and inset brushed logo all amount to a piece that looks good on any desk. The swivel design works quite well, the cord is well made and plenty long enough. These fans seem very solidly built as well. I don't imagine it breaking any time soon. Another thing I really like about the unit is the oscillation feature. It's a very smooth, wide angle sweep, and turning the feature on doesn't create any additional noise. I'm fairly certain this feature is powered by a separate electric motor in the base.
Cons:
Airflow rates at a solid fair-mediocre on these fans. On high setting, you'd expect it to move more air. Given what it is though, a 5" or so fan, I can't complain too much. Low setting moves marginally less air but with about half the noise. Bottom line is I think people are just expecting too much from a fan this size. It sounds like, well, a fan. The buzz is a LITTLE louder than I'd like, but overall, not as bad as it has gotten a rap for. If there's anything I would revise about these fans, it's the design and placement of the controls. The rolling off/low/high switch is a bit stiff to allow changing modes with one hand, and the oscillation switch is in the rear, but not a huge issue. I'd have preferred just a potentiometer on the front with a toggle switch.
Conclusion:
The fans earn the prestigious rank of "exceptionally average" in my book. Where they excel in form, they fall only slightly behind in function. Overall though, I'd say one of these units has earned itself a permanent place on my desk. Running on low setting the noise is low enough to not be troublesome, and it moves enough air to keep my face cool and my hair blowing ever so slightly in that classic sexy way. And with the total price coming to just $25 for the pair, I can't complain. The other may very well end up on my nightstand, or even as an air circulator for my stereo cabinet.
*SUMMARY* Seems to me that because of the cool looks and name, people were expecting these to be some kind of desktop goddamn whirlwind machine. Set your expectations realistically, and you won't be disappointed.
