Correct me if I'm wrong, but a while back, they stopped allowing you to purchase 3 Bowl of Cereal for a buck each, and just determined that everyone purchased 3 Bowl of Cereal and thus everyone who got through would be purchasing 3 BOCs for $3 plus shipping. Well, I got my BOCs in one box and it included a total of 4 items ... a high school musical clock, a tshirt, a fold-up picnic basket and an octopus extension cord, of which I had just bought 3 during the woot-off. Either they are getting stingy with their BOCs or I got ripped off.

According to the android forums a mini USB will work for charging.

I bought 3 and it was only 6 bucks - who cares? take the gamble and get the Woot moving!

It should. The 500mA output it's rated for might bo too low for some power-hungry devices (like a hard-drive based mp3 player or digital camera), but the Eris only has a 1300mAH battery, so this should charge it without a problem.

The Mogul, Hero, Droid Eris, Touch Pro's 1 and 2 all use ExtUSB, which will fit a Mini USB charger like the one up for sale. They all use the same 1.0 Amp HTC charger.

It's very common for smart phones nowadays to use 1.0 Amp chargers, which is double the power supplied by a standard USB port. And ten times the 0.1 Amps of power supplied by the charger up for sale.

Yes it will work with an Eris. While the Eris does have a unique shape a standard USB also works in it. I use the same charger I used for my Blackberry on my Eris and standard USB hooking to laptop

That's not true..Droid Eris has a uniquely-shaped plug, but it uses the USB Mini-B standard and fits a standard USB Mini-B cable in addition to its unique cable. I charge my Eris every night with a standard Mini-B cable.

It will DEFINITELY charge the Droid Eris. I use micro-USB charger that was from a Moto to charge my phone at work. As for speed, I'm not sure, but I do know the power contacts match up. You can't sync to a PC without the proprietary USB cable, but this is a charger, you couldn't use it for that anyhow.

Never mind what I said above about 0.1 Amps, reading fail. The output of the charger is 500 mA or 0.5 Amps.

Most smartphones should be happy with that amount of juice, although I have seen my roommate unable to charge his Palm Pre with anything less than 1.0 Amps. Which is a failure of the Palm Pre - smart phones should still be able to charge with 0.5 Amps, but it will be slower than with the original 1.0 Amp charger.

tjsynkral wrote:Sorry, but you're half wrong on that one.

The Droid Eris has an ExtUSB port, but a USB Mini B will plug right in.

Some other newer HTC phones use Micro USB which is a smaller plug and Mini USB does not fit.

But, to repeat myself one last time for clarity - 0.1 Amp is probably not enough to actually charge a smart phone.

good news it puts out .5 Amps. which would be the same as using a usb port to charge your phone. and is plenty for the task of charging ones smart phone

My LG env3 from Verizon tells me every time I plug it in that I'm not using the official cable, but it does charge.

This is wrong. The Droid Eris has the same 'unique shape' as all the other Droid phones, which this (or any other) Mini USB charger will fit without a problem.

Edit: I misspoke. I should have said HTC Droid phones, the Motorolla Droid does have a proprietary connector that won't work with Mini USB.

have you ever had a usb->mini-b cable, plugged it into your computer with your motorola Q, and found out you need to install drivers BEFORE you can even charge it? when the same cable can charge practically any mini-b device (cellphone (HTC), camera, ps3 controller, etc...) no problem?

it's because motorola decided to f*ck everyone over by reversing a couple pins in their connectors, just to be "different".

that's why mini-b AC adapter by motorola typically only charge motorola devices, and not others (like an HTC cell phone, a Kodak camera, ps3 controller, etc...)

blackberry made it so it takes both regular mini-b and the backward-asstastic motorola chargers.

A few facts:

1. This is not a Motorola charger. It's an off brand that just has a miniUSB output

2. Moto never reversed pins. They added a few, but did so in a backwards compatable manor. If you use a regular cable, you can only get the standard charge rate. If you use their special cable (and associated wall wort), you can get a fast charge (2 hours vs 10 hours). The reason it requires drivers, is that it has two states in the phone. A high power transfer and a lower power charge. It uses so much current in the transfer phase, that it needs to turn off its charging. So it uses drivers to negotiate the stage its in.

You have it wrong.

Motorola phones (specifically the Razr) shut off the charging function when a USB data connection is detected. Installing the Motorola driver re-activates charging on the phone.

Motorola chargers do not attempt to make a USB data connection. Only the +5V and ground wires are connected. When the phone sees that no data wires are present it accepts the power. That's why cheapo adapters from eBay will charge a Motorola phone.

If they tried to reverse the wires people would be crying bloody murder, because they tried to plug a standardized USB wire into a standardized USB device and fried that device.
