I thought everyone should be aware of this deal. No Blueray player but 6 GB ram and a 1GB Graphics card and its brand new and $30 cheaper!

Who even needs an RJ-11 port anymore anyway?

This HP has nearly every jack imaginable, including a RJ-11 telephone jack. It's right next to the power jack on the right side. Okay, it's missing a serial and parallel ports...

As for needing an RJ-11 port, it comes in handy when traveling in areas with no broadband. In very remote areas, where there isn't even dial up Internet (hence no email), one can use the RJ-11 to send/receive faxes and files as long as there is a telephone connection. Heck, it doesn't even have to have to be that remote. My parents have no broadband or WiFi so any kind of data transfer would necessarily go through their telephone line.

Ignoring the New vs Refurb aspect, Woot's laptop is a better deal. For $30 more, you're getting a larger display (often the most expensive component of a laptop), higher battery capacity (6 vs 8 cells) and the ability to play Blue-Ray. As for the 6gb, that's a weird configuration so it's probably maxed out at 6gb. This laptop can be doubled to 8gb.

I'm a bit mifffed because I bought this 3 weeks ago at the last Wootoff, and this version has a slightly better processor. Mine has a AMD Turion M600 running at 2.4ghz while this has an M620 running at 2.5ghz. Damn.

The plusses: The Bluray is awesome. The screen is amazing. Large 500 gig HD.

The CONS:
B-A-T-T-E-R-Y - Life is AWEFUL.
Hard Drive is 5400rpm and slow

If you want a desktop replacement for entertainment this is awesome... Not for heavy gaming and multi tasking.

No, it has a Seagate Momentus 7200.4 ST9500420AS 500GB hard drive running at 7200 RPM. That makes it as fast as any desktop in its class. I di a lot of video editing and conversions on it and it runs pretty fast, no slower than my duo core desktop.

Is this laptop any good for playing games? How powerful is the listed graphics card, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200? Or is it more suitable for watching Bluray movies?

When you wrote, "Of course somebody has to ask this, so...," I thought at it was gonna be the inevitable, "Does this work with a mac"?

Yeah..I felt the same way when I bought the Intel version without HDMI. But it helped me get this one brand new by talking my wife into me giving the other one to my daughter. Now we all have HP laptops. And they are rock solid!

You expect a laptop to be 1080??? Good luck with that. It has an HDMI port, so you can connect it to your home TV to display your Blu-Ray discs.

This seems like a decent machine for running Media Center, but since I already have a home unit for that purpose I do not need it.

It's actually the coolest-running laptop I've ever owned (except for netbooks). One possible reason is its size. This has a 17" screen, so the base is correspondingly much larger than your 14" laptop. Larger base means less concentration of heat in one small area. Your Turion may also not be the mobile version which generates less heat. Some of my earlier laptops used standard power-hungry and hot-running CPUs.

I think with Win 7 Home Premium you could run Media Center all by itself without worrying about the XBox.

It has HDMI output which works like a charm. Even comes with a serviceable remote control (that stores within the laptop) so you can operate it like a standard Blue-Ray player when attached to your 1080 TV.

When I researched this laptop the most common negative comments were about its speakers. I ignored them because sound was not my primary concern and frankly, how bad could it be? I mean, it uses Altec Lansing speakers, one of the top names in portable audio. Well, let me tell you, it's pretty bad. Not so much sound quality but sound volume. Even at maximum on all settings, it's lower than my netbook and other el cheapo laptop on medium. And of course, sounds distorts when set to maximum.

On the plus side, it has every port necessary minus serial and parallel ports. It's also missing Firewire. But it makes up for that with eSATA and HDMI. I can;t imagine going back to USB2.0 for file transfers after having been spoiled by eSATA. It makes HUGE difference.

Would love to get another of these, but I'm just not willing to buy one for the thief that keeps stealing laptops out of the mail.

Out of four of these that I've bought (3 from Woot, one from CompUSA), I have received ONE... so I'm out $1800 and the post office and the MPO (Military post office) don't seem to give a damn....

Regarding Gaming Ability:

This is not a gaming machine. The description may mislead some to believe that this unit has a dedicated graphics card; it does not: the graphics are integrated.

To those looking for an amiable gaming solution in this price range I would recommend investigating a used or refurbished Dell XPS 1640, or like system . . . the Inspiron E1705 (provided it is loaded with correct equipment) is not a bad choice for those on a budget. The Microsoft Cashback program is soon to expire but could be used on eBay to get such a system at a reasonable price.

btflorey wrote:Funny how much opinions can vary in the complete opposite direction--that's all this is--an opinion as you provided no source or shred of proof to back up your claim which is exactly what you just ridiculed the previous wooter for.

Actually, _opinion_ is a fairly serious legal term. We do not live in a world dependent entirely on fact (how easy this would make life!). . . Fact and Truth are not the same things, but both are important. Anyway, _opinion_ is no term to throw about lightly or as a 'mere' thing. An opinion may be considered good or bad . . . that's not to say that facts do not accompany good opinions, however, being founded upon fact does not designate an opinion 'good' either: sound logic is also important.

This is just something I would like to clarify . . . an _opinion_ of mine, if you will.

Same here my 2yr old HP is a rock solid turd with a melted mother board. Scored a new Toshiba from Costco for $450.

I work computer repair and find it humorous that no matter what brand you pick I'll hear two people swear by them and two people swear at them every day. Sometimes your notebook works for awhile, sometimes it doesn't.

For me, I've had an HP for a little over 5 years. Still works great.

So, those of you who got this during the last Wootoff - how long did it take for it to arrive? Hoping my current beast will last that long...

I bought an HP in January 2002 that I am still using. The only thing I've had to fix at all is buying a new battery. My old HP even took a year of he** in Iraq with no issues. So, I'm excited to receive this one!

I have usually had good luck with refurbished products in the past. The Blu-ray/DVD drive on this HP Pavilion laptop is probably defective. Makes a horrendous noise and takes 10 minutes to load a DVD. Blu-ray movies will not play at all. I was on the phone with HP technical support last evening for 2 hours without success. Looks like this one will have to be returned. Does anyone have any suggestions?

When I tried validating windows on this new laptop, I was notified that my windows product key is invalid. Since there isn't a contact woot phone number, what do I need to do now?

The warranty for this item is through HP- have you tried to contact them (here)? They should be able to figure out what's going wrong with your machine, though please do let us know if you have problems when talking to them.

Been a great laptop although the charging cable was broken and had to be returned. After waiting almost three weeks to get it I had to wait another week to get a replacement charging cable in the mail from HP. Great deal though. FYI, Found a backpack at the army surplus store with a padded pouch that fits this laptop perfectly in digital cammo BTW.
