They're not always interchangeable.

Just remember to cut at a right angle across the grain for a wood steak (or perhaps a wood stake) and with the grain to get a wood fillet.

If you cut diagonally across the grain, you get a woody.

Ordered these last time Woot had them and love using them. Soaked for about 45 minutes (weigh them down in a pan of water) and cooked fish the first time around. Excellent cedar flavor infused in the fish. Personally, my experience is that you use these once and toss them. Worth the purchase price for sure.

Can these be used aboard pirate ships?

Sailor: Perchance I may have pilfered a few of your pieces of eight, Captain, but in return, I have prepared for you this fine smoked salmon - a culinary delight worthy of the most pampered monarch.

Captain: I won't hear such language aboard me ship! Lads, have the rogue walk the plank!

Lads: But the plankee's missin' Cap'n! Dunno where she's gone t'all!

edit: almost forgot: aaaarrrrgghhhhh!

Never, I repeat, Never, put wood items used for food in soapy water. This includes wooden spoons, cutting boards, and these lovely planks. They absolutely absorb flavor from whatever comes into contact with it. Use 'em, toss 'em, next.

Wouldn't wooden spoons, cutting boards, etc. get a wee bit costly to replace if you tossed them out every time you used one?

Texans selling cedar planks... I never thought I'd see the day. I happen to be an expert planker from up here in the Pacific Northwest. My favorite method I call Danger Planking. I let the plank start to burn on the bottom. As noted in the desc., use a squirt bottle to put out any big flames. Your salmon will have a cedar smoke flavor with an unbelievably moist texture. If done right juice will shoot out of the fillet when you cut it.
Planks work best for fish lean meats. Try chicken breast and pork tenderloin medallions. Beef tenderloin might work, but most steak just gets tough.
I never reuse them either, but they make great kindling!

When tossing, I am only referring to the planks for sale here, not the spoons or cutting boards as you are not cooking them on a grill Spoons and cutting boards get clean using hot, hot water only. Olive oil is and excellent way to season them after and it keeps them from drying out.

These can also be used in a regular oven, not just on the grill. Alder planks are also very nice.

As regards soaking these - I do quite a lot of smokehouse type stuff. If you have some inexpensive whiskey or bourbon it can be added to the soaking water. The wine mix is really good for salmon, but bourbon adds a very different (and good) taste too.

Silly question perhaps, but what would happen if you used this with a George Foreman?

Problem with olive oil - any vegetable oil really - is that over time it breaks down and/or goes rancid. The best stuff for seasoning wooden utencils is mineral oil. And yeah - I am serious.

I understand that you CAN do it. What I was wondering is if it tastes good. I've mainly only seen people saying they cook fish on it, so that is why I asked. I don't know what cedar tastes like so I wasn't sure if people generally like it with things other than fish.

I think "barbecuing" must be the Texas word for "grilling"...(?) Unless it has something to do with the smoke thing.

If you're willing to take the time to chop one up at the end of its life, you could get one more use by adding the chips to a smoker box.

reserve 2 ea. for seafood, lamb, poultry, beef, veggies, and pork.--

Don't wash with soap.

Soak and brush to clean.

Don't be reluctant to soak in water + beer or wine.

Only use natural lump charcoal.

Settle for cedar.

Wish they were pecan-wood.

Serve the 'rustic' dinner on em to your guests for greatest impact cause they look cool.

Repeat.

Got 'em last time - love 'em. Cooked some of the best salmon we've ever done on them.

My fire was extra hot so the planks were a one-time event - charred and burned enough that they can't be reused.

But - the burning gave off smoke which is one reason the salmon was so tasty.

They were a bargain the first time - even more so at this lower price.

Highly recommend.

You can use these in the oven, too. I did the other day when it was raining. About 40 minutes at 325 degrees will do it for salmon. The plank held up better in the oven than the grill. Didn't even come close to catching fire

Used these on Father's Day for the first time - it was actually my husband's gift. We normally pan sear, than bake salmon, but using the planks gave us the most moist, tender salmon that I ever had - unbelieveable. I know that people say that you can reuse the planks, but it was all fishy afterwards, so I just chucked it.

They had these at costco a few weeks ago for $1.41 each plus tax. My father uses these regularly for cooking salmon and loves them. I've priced them everywhere, and this is the cheapest I've seen them, so long as you order 3 sets and only pay the shipping once, which puts them at around $1.22 each.

I was really hoping these would pop up before Father's Day - my dad is a pretty avid fisherman and loves throwing salmon on these things. Even though it's a bit late, I am glad they came back around. This is a great price for grilling planks and I kicked myself for missing them the first couple of times they showed up here. Thanks Woot Gods!
