Picked up one of these on an Amazon deal a while back. Use it with my PC and my Mac flawlessly. Easy to set up, easy to use.

Not 100% on this but I don't think all of the features will work on Linux

Amazon link here.

Very good reviews, and Amazon sells it for about twice the cost.

I got a guy on my ventrilo that says that the 5 ink system in this thing is stupid as f**k, and that if ANY of the 5 run out, you can't print *ANYTHING*, including BLACK ONLY, until it is replaced.

If true, that's got to be a deal breaker.

I have a Pixma MX300 that I bought refurbished. It works great. So that's my thumbs-up to the brand.

I have two MP620 printers (similar to this model) and they work great. They are much better than the HP printer that I previously owned that broke 2 weeks out of warranty.

Hey! Something I can talk about for once with some experience. This is a decent all around machine for your average consumer. Your average consumer. Don't expect this thing to wow an office.

I have always preferred a printer that uses an ink cartridge for each color. I would hate to throw out a cartridge with ink for 2 of the 3 ink colors still full. I'd prefer separate cartridges for separate colors.

This is by far the most valuable piece of information I could possibly think of needing to make a decision on this printer.. Thank you!

Come on, moderator! The Woot boards are known for their good-humored discussions, including those not entirely on topic!

Why are you deleting those that are both clean and are very much on the topic of all-things-Woot?

Good reviews on google and it seems everywhere else and lowest price from a reputable dealer is $112 for new. Including shipping it looks like the lowest is around $140. Seems like a good buy so far

Great for photos, wouldn't recommend it as much for B&W documents. It prints SLOWLY. 1 page every 6-7 seconds or so.

It's been 20 years, I am going to copy that floppy.

Canon printers are great if you can afford to feed them...

MWPollard

quality posts: 15 Private Messages MWPollard

Many ink jet printers don't allow printing if any cartridges are empty. That's not unique. Five cartridges make for more accurate color. And separate cartridges mean you only have to replace the empty ones.

Yeah, that would be a deal breaker for sure. I had that same issue with my Epson. After awhile I just gave it away, literally, and bought a HP printer/fax/copier/phone all in one unit as well. I love the two cartridge system HP has, one for color and one for B & W and you can still print B & W even if the color one goes out. The money I am saving on cartridges has more than paid for the HP unit. I don't care how good this Canon is, the cartridge situation is going to drive you nuts.

Happy wooting.

Buying a printer is like buying a car. Most people consider the price without researching the maintenance and mileage (i.e. maintenance and ink consumption)

Very happy with my wireless Canon. Wireless setup is easy in Windows 7 but difficult in Windows XP.

People still buy ink printers? The gadgetry is nice, but even with fill-'er-up ink kits this is a pass for me.

I actually have owned this printer for the past 6 - 8 months. Yes it will warn you that ink is out but you can just click through the error and it will still let you print regardless if a certain ink is out.

Trust me I've done it many time when colors are out but I'm only printing black text.

Sure it's a little annoying getting the ink out pop up when you know it's only set to black and white but it will still print.

Good scanner, good printer. Each ink cartridge is about $12 at brick and morter stores.

I replaced a 12 year old HP with the Tri color cartridges that still even being this old was $85 to replace both black and color.

Will someone help me find out if the power supply can support 220V?

I am stationed outside of the US, but am looking to get a printer when I come home in a few weeks.

Thanks!

To all wondering about the separate cartridges...it's a pain in the ass. It seems to be a good idea, only having to replace one color, until you realize that you are spending ~$40 per cartridge just like you would with the multi color ones. That and unless you select greyscale mode, you use the color cartridges no matter what.

Oh, and the colors used most for black and white printing are the more hard to find (read expensive) ones.

This is true of the majority of inkjet printers, it's nothing unique to this model. Just buy a set of replacement carts before the instant that you actually need them. It tells you how much is left in each tank, so it's really not that difficult.

Or, better yet, invest in a Continuous Ink System (usually known as CIS or CISS). They cost about the price of one set of tanks, but they hold the equivalent of 50-60 tanks of ink. If you do go this route, I'd recommend that you look for ones that say "with chips"...the chips make it so you don't have to override the printer's ink sensors. It'll work either way, but the ones with chips are an easier way of doing things.

Hint: Search eBay for "MP640 CIS*"...the ones with chips start around $70. One set of Canon-branded ink carts for this printer will run you about...$70.

I stayed up for this?!?

My Pixma has the same color system and it will continue to print when a color is out so whoever said that is wrong.

My epson on the other hand won't work when any of the colors are out.

My pixma is the best printer I've owned. It's too bad that so many people are taking one person's word inaccurate word about this.

Consumer reports rates this model 8th out of 63 tested. It received a rating of 70 with the highest printer(hp) receiving a 74 and the lowest(lexmark) receiving a 48.

4x6 photo cost = .50 @ 1 pages per minute
8x10 photo cost = 1.70 @ 1.8 ppm
text cost 7.7 cents @ 7.7 ppm

Sounds like a go to me if you are in the market, pull the trigger.
