I live in an older house, and this only fit on one of our doorframes. It is very convenient to be able to use... but, not so convenient since it is attached to a closet off the guest bedroom. Just know if you have old, bulky but beautiful colonial/victorian doorjambs, you will not be able to use it.

These are really great for dorm rooms, and they're completely stable (unless you try swinging yourself across the hall with them...)

I have one of these, works real well.
Only problem is i have to tighten the nuts on it every once in a while, otherwise it becomes a bit wobbly.

Yes!!! A great buy! I have one of these and paid $30 at Target, then got a $10 gift card back, but it didn't come with the straps. Those cost me another $8.
It's sturdy and stable and has not done any damage at all. And yes, fine for P90X.
Nice!

This really started a fitness makeover for me. I saw great results after a few weeks of just the iron gym, and it was kind of a gateway to weight training, fitness, and getting in shape.

I had to install a small piece of wood on the other side of the trim above the door because it was to high. In order for it to grab the door the trim has to be 2-4 inches or so high and have a "lip" on top.

Some people laugh, but pull-ups are hard!

I have rounded wooden moldings around all my door ways. I tried one of these and it started to mash my moldings. I took the bar off and rigged it to my floor joists in the basement instead.

I picked up the Perfect Pullup set off Woot last Fall, and let me tell you, while you think it would be janky, it is not. I'm 170 and it held me fine. The apartment I lived in at the time was extremely old, and the perfect pullup was as sturdy as ever.

I can only imagine that this Iron Gym would work as well. I say get one!

$15 is a great price for this, but I much prefer the Iron Gym Extreme, which lets me do wide-grip pullups:

But this cost me $40 and I still have to order the ab straps for $8.

While I wish this thing was able to fold up for better storage, it has been pretty nice. The overall awkwardness of the piece means it doesnt fit under most beds and takes up a good amount of closet space.

I have one of these and it really works well to distribute the weight evenly across the door. I weight about 200 and my flimsy doorframes barely creak when I use this.

Make sure you have about a 1 inch lip at the top of the doorframe otherwise it can slip off. I used this in my parent's trailer and it only had a thin stip above the door and it liked to slip off. On pretty much any normal doorframe it is awesome.

g19fanatic wrote:am wondering if there is a weight limit...

I read that the limit is 300 pounds, and it that sounds about right. Both because of the likelihood of your doing a chinup while weighing more than 300 pounds and because of its construction.

Though it is made of steel, the bars aren't solid, they're hollow and held together by bolts that you apply yourself. Plus, as many other people pointed out, there's your door frame to think about.

I used it when I weighed ~230 pounds and am still comfortable using it at ~190. I only use it for a select few P90X routines and pushups. Using it for proper dips and such, like the website thinks you might, is pretty much impossible due to its very low profile when placed on the ground.

Something else that I haven't seen mentioned, yet: I have white molding around my door frames, which is common for most homes, and the black grips that also act to soften the Iron Gym's blow to your woodwork will rub the paint black.

Anyway, I'm a 1 year owner and even if it did break, I'd still buy another.

Yes, you can use it on the floor for crunches, ab curls, sit-ups, etc. You just need to find a doorway with no obstructions on the sides, lay the IG on the floor with the long straight bar spanning the doorway, with the IG on the opposite side of the doorway from where you are sitting. The doorframe will keep the bar from lifting or pulling toward you as you crunch away.

I've had my Iron Gym since about one week after the first IG commercial I saw--I think it's part of the 1% of "as seen on TV" products that aren't utter garbage. Don't get me wrong, it IS made rather cheaply, and it doesn't fit very many doorways, but in my case it gets the job done. I weighed as much as 210 lbs, and while it did get a little flexy doing deep pushups, it has held up well and I have no fears of it breaking.

Now I pretty much only use it for pull-ups, as it makes pushups way too easy, and the ab strap exercises don't "do it" for me the way that various crunches, planks, etc. do. I guess that could be a selling point for someone who hasn't done pushups in a long time, as you won't immediately get discouraged. Pull-ups are also a lot easier to get into if you use the neutral hand position for the first couple of weeks, and that is something that many other pull-up bars lack.

In for 1. When we moved we forgot to remove the mounting brackets for a bar that my son used regularly. I like the fact that this will allow him to do the same exercises, and then some and does not have to be screwed into the door frame =)

Silly me. I wanted one to use with P90X, but I completely forgot my basement has a somewhat low drop ceiling - there isn't enough clearance to pull my head above the door. Glad I went downstairs to doublecheck the door before I purchased.

Also, this appears to require door TRIM - it does not attach to a door frame as the post suggests. The trim is the visible decorative part around the door. If you do not have trim (or if it is rounded metal on the top and not flat), or if it isn't nailed in with extra, extra nails to support your weight, this might not be for you.

Just look at your intended door carefully before buying this.

Great deal since it includes the ab straps which most do not come with and they sell for 29.99 + more for the ab straps. I have a knockoff brand and it works very well. I have used it for situps, pushups, fending off attacking crickets, mortal kombat cosplay, a babyseat, a portable roller coaster harness, and i'm actually in starbucks right now using it as a laptop holder. No other product gives me that perfect angle to stalk celebrities while browsing woot like the iron gym.

I bought one of these last year to go through the p90x workouts. It works great. I use it for both the pull up routines and the pushup routines. The only problem is you can't get very wide to do wide grip pullups. I have been tempted to get the extreme for that reason alone.

hmmm... if only man made some kind of gloves or grips to prevent callouses this wouldn't be an issue!?! ;)

i had one of these. the frame was constructed well. however, after much use, it started making serious indentures in the molding where the pads are, and also a nice big rectangle above the molding in the rear, where the brace is.

Bandrik wrote:I've actually owned one before. These are actually pretty damn good. They really work well, remaining sturdy in a doorway.

Only thing was, my apartment's doorways were extra-wide, so this wasn't wide enough to fit, so I bought a different one that did. But the iron gym worked fantastically for a friend who DID have a more standard doorway width.

In short: recommended.

I bought this product and had the same problem of extra-wide doorways in my apt. Which one did you buy that did end up fitting?
