Anyway, this is a better deal than from Apple themselves. Check it out: http://store.apple.com/us/product/FC086?mco=MTM3NzY1NzA

That's the refurb from Apple, so it's a direct comparison.

Also keep in mind that they usually release an updated version of the iPod touch in early September.

While the items are identical the WARRANTY is 4 times longer if purchased at the APPLE site.

You can get on any wifi network with an iPod touch. Starbucks specifically isn't free - they partnered with Boingo to provide wifi in-store, which means you have to have a paid Boingo subscription to use their wifi.

Not exactly. Woot's warranty against defects isn't the same as Apple's. If the iPod is less than a year old, it's still under warranty. Period. You can take that sucker into any Apple store, they'll look up the serial number, and if it's under a year old, it's under warranty. It doesn't matter if it belonged to someone else prior, and it doesn't matter where it was purchased. The warranty will still be intact.

I have an internet radio question about this iPod Touch.
Assuming I am in the presence of a WiFi connection, can I listen to all of the same internet radio stations that are listed in the itunes app for PC/Mac?

Actually, in my area at least (SoCal) Starbucks has gone with completely free and open WiFi at all their stores. That started July 1, 2010.

I have a subscription to Sirius, including the Internet option and 'There is an app for that'. I have the Sirius app and allows me to listen to that. I also have Pandora Radio on there which allows you to listen to whatever specific type of music that you like.

All the pros are already on my jailbroken iPod Touch with 3.2 or something like that.

But on another note, the first con is false, because I took my friend's iPod Touch and jailbroke iOS4... May have been the phone jailbreak but it works. It did take a bit of searching though. I was looking between blackra1n and redsn0w.

It's not an iTouch according to Apple, it's an iPod Touch.

Anyone know if there is a good and affordable synch tool from the iPod to Outlook? I'd love to have one, but, I rely on Outlook on my PC for all my email, contact and calendaring.

NightGhost wrote:My personal review, updated:

We are a family of 4, and we own 4 iPod touches. When I first got mine, I was thinking that it was nice to have an mp3 player that could also surf the web. Then my wife and I went to the movies, and she dropped the cover to my ebook reader, and couldn't find it in the dark. A nice guy behind us said "don't you have the free flashlight function on your iTouch?" and helped us find the cover.

Of course, you can read ebooks on the iPod touch too.

Later that day we had to drive to an office, and my wife panicked because she didn't know how to get to the address, and had left her GPS at work. iPod touch to the rescue again. Note that the Touch has a GPS-like feature that uses WiFi.

It even has an app ($10) that lets me watch TV broadcasts from my Hava Titanium HD (got it on Woot!).

I was never an Apple fan, but...

that only begins to explain why the iPod touch is my favorite gadget.

And many of the best apps and games are free, or very inexpensive. I've been playing the Texas Hold-em game lately.

I also like 5-0 Radio, which lets you listen to local police and emergency broadcasts. I get the game scores with the CBS Sports app, and of course, it has the great Woot app!

I've also been using mine to listen to audiobooks. And today I used it to settle an argument about local street names.

You can see movie ratings with the imdb app, and then see where they're playing with Flixster. And sometimes you just want to set an alarm...

Lately I've been listening to the BBC broadcast of Lord Of The Rings on it.

And if you want accessories, such as speakers, alarm clocks, docking stations, etc. - there are many more made for iPods than for any other company's players.

It's much, much more than an mp3 player.

I recently bought the Seagate Dockstar on Woot and can view photos from my PC on my iPod Touch. We keep it docked on a tabletop radio and listen to streaming Pandora Radio all day.

The Touch is indeed a great little device.

And again, there is NO comparison between an Apple refurb and a third-party refurb. Paying Apple an extra Jackson (or even Grant) is worth having a new case and battery. Buying ANY woot refurb is a crapshoot, and should not be done if you care at all about the product's appearance. (If the refurb netbook I ordered is any indication, no one even checks the cosmetic damage before accepting it for sale. Or it was dragged behind the delivery truck to my home. Either way...)

It doesn't take away the double click iPod control, it just moves it. Double click the home button to bring up multitasking, then swipe your finger from left to right. There are your controls.

Actually, iOS 4 leaves the 'double click' ipod controls in place when the device is locked. It only changes the functionality to the task manager (i use that term loosely) when the you're unlocked, though if you swipe to the right after double clicking you should still be able to acces the ipod controls without opening the app proper.

Was thinking of biting for use with Skype but it looks like even with IOS4 you would not be able to multitask. Will wait till a true 3rd gen technology ipod touch comes to Woot. I understand Woot's "current generation" to mean 2nd gen technology which Apple sold as 3rd gen to low-end consumers (to liquidate inventory?).

bitethat wrote:LOL @ current generation... you lost track too huh Woot?

There's a lot of confusion, what with some vendors calling this 3rd gen, and some calling it 2nd (since it came out with the 32Gb and 64GB 3rd gens, but it's the same as the older 8GB model).

So Woot did the right thing. If they said 2nd gen, people would avoid it as an outdated model, and if they said 3rd gen, people would complain that there isn't one.

sterhill wrote:are there any hidden costs to use the wifi email, maps, net, etc? what is MobileMe?
Thanks!

MobileMe is apple's cloud and sync service - it used to be iDisk and now they sync with apple applications. Not expensive, and you can sync with nearly everything else (e.g. google calendar).

everything else is free, but some better apps cost a few cents, but I'm going entirely free. Skype is free for the app. The built-in features don't have any hidden costs, but some things will send data back. You need to do the oo.apple.com to opt out.

Hardware is a different story:

It does not come with a microphone - so you might want one for voice memos, or a full ipod headset for Skype.

The stainless steel scratches easily, and I worry about the front, so a case might help to. And an extra USB adaptor and/or car charger - the battery is not user replaceable.

You can do bluetooth A2DP for stereo, but you might also need one of the fancier A/V cables if you want to watch video or other things on a larger screen.

(overstock.com often has sales and coupons and has these fairly cheap, but some products have lower quality, YMMV).

If the serial number shows it to have been originally placed into service over 1 year ago then you only have a 90 day warranty. Otherwise you have whatever is left of the original one year warranty from the date it was first sold or 90 days whichever is longer. If you buy it at the Apple store you get a "fresh" start on the one year.

Not sure if it has been said already, but in iOS4, double-clicking the home button does bring up the multitask bar, but if you the swipe your finger to the right (moving you to the far left panel of the multitask bar) you should find the iPod controls there. Double-clicking while the iPod/iPhone is 'locked' will bring up the music controls if you locked it while playing music.

Word of caution: I found this by installing iOS4 on my 3GS, so I'm not 100% sure it will work for the touch.
