Anyone else have a very slow woot page? I saw the "we are doing maintenance" screen earlier. Now it's just slow. Although http://deals.woot.com/ is just fine.

except the 2nd gen 32gb pwnd the 2nd gen 8gb & 16 gb versions. then, 8 never got a 3rd gen(this is still second), 16 was discontinued(and its price transferred to the 3rd gen 32gb), and the 3rd gen 32gb & 64gb(64gb added in 3rd gen, and took the price of the former gen 32gb). 3rd gen only exists as 32gb and 64gb, both of which exponentially pwn the 2nd(aka current) gen 8gb.

I'm having the same problem. Thrice my order was denied via PayPal. I've given up. I ordered from woot! just a few days ago (and eagerly awaiting my Beanie of Crabs) with no issues. Something has changed or something went wrong during tonight's maintenance.

iOS4 Software Update

"Compatibility

The iOS 4 Software Update works with the second- and third-generation iPod touch. Not all features are compatible with all devices."

"For example, multitasking, custom wallpaper, and Bluetooth keyboard support are available only with iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and the third-generation iPod touch (32GB and 64GB models from late 2009)."

$149 with free shipping & 1 year warranty from Apple for a refurb

Just to clarify, iOS4 will not come pre-installed, but you can upgrade to it on these. But you will not get most of the cooler features, and even some of the basic ones like orientation locking, since they put that in the multi-tasking menu which you won't have on this device.

That's the refurb from Apple, so it's a direct comparison.

Don't be so hasty, because actually this one has a 90 day warranty, and the Apple store offers a full one-year warranty. apple free shipping, someone said...so 15 bucks for an additional 9 months...worth it? I just bought the refurb nano on Apple store...

But can it multitask?
It would seem not since the page for the iOS 4 says "iPod touch 3rd generation 32GB and 64GB (late 2009)"
http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/ios4-software-update.html
Alot of people don't think that ipod multitasking is a semi-sham, but really it does add alot of functionality not having to go back to the home screen and then restarting the app if you want to check something

Only by the grace of god was my wife sitting next to me when this contraption came up. Some force-too-late thankfully confirmed the deal on whatever this thing is. Sounds like a small magical telephone that can't make a telephone call to me.

Anyway, yes, this appears to be a smokin' deal, whatever it is, per ounce.

I understand that, but most equate iOS4 with all the features. Have you seen 4 on a iPhone 3G? I wouldn't recommend it on either this iPod model or the 3G.

That's the refurb from Apple, so it's a direct comparison.

Also keep in mind that they usually release an updated version of the iPod touch in early September.

I'ld pay the extra $15 TO Apple for the extra 9 months of warranty- especially on a refurb. Plus i double the coverage with my Amex, so that's 6 months coverage from Woot vs. 24 months coverage from Apple. Apple ftw!

Yeah, this wouldn't have worked for the last 2 months here. In fact, even STORING it here, would invalid the warranty!

Bought one of these last time around for $150. It's even more of a steal now. I'd advise anyone who thinks they might want this to get it, it's definitely worth the money. Mine arrived right on time and was in great condition. I was so happy with mine I sold it so I could buy the 32gb alternative that came up on woot a week later. Some caution though, with this model you will have older hardware(slower runtimes occasionally), no voice control, and with iOS 4 you won't get wallpapers or multitasking.

Almost pulled the trigger. But... Apple.com has the same unit for $149. This includes the 1 yr. warranty, which will cost you 19.95 additional with squaretrade. Then the kicker is they guarantee a new battery. I didn't see anything regarding a new battery in the woot output.

No - as willgame4food shouted, there is no 8GB 3rd generation. I have a 3rd gen 32GB that does the multitasking; my son's 8GB model will not (bought at the same time).

From Wikipedia: "The 3rd generation iPod Touch with iOS 3.1 was announced and subsequently released on September 9, 2009. It is available with 32GB or 64GB of flash memory. Apple also continued offering the 2nd generation 8 GB version."

Yes - some stores have badged these as 3rd generation. But cnet says: "the 8GB third-generation Touch is technically identical to the second-generation model."

Hmm...I never knew about preformace. Must be something new.

Regarding multitasking -- 2nd Gen iPod Touch by default will not get multitasking when upgraded to iOS4.

But it doesn't mean you can't have it. All you need is some hacking. I tried on my 2nd gen ipod touch and it works well -- not as smoothly as on iphone 3gs but definitely useable.

Again, after all it's a hack -- do so at your own risk:

Apple should come out with an Apple Garbage Can to compliment all of their products. It would be compatible with all Apple appliances!

For the people I purchased these for there is no reason for voice capabilities which is only difference I can tell between the 2nd gen and 4th gen.

The 4th gen might be a little faster, but again, that makes little difference to someone that has never had an iPod Touch before.

Some quick input:

This "3rd" generation iPod is 3rd generation insofar as it's the exact same hardware (more or less) that was previously sold as a 2nd-gen iPod touch, prior to the release of the 3rd-gen iPod touches that are capable of multitasking and doing all of the fancy new iOS4 features.

The hardware of this "3rd" gen iPod touch is otherwise the same, so it can't do any more than any other 2nd gen iPod touch with iOS4 can do.

It's currently only the *larger* capacity 3rd gen iPod touches that have the newer hardware and support multitasking and the custom wallpapers.

Next, my experience with refurbs (Apple products) has been positive. I got a refurbed 30GB 5.5-gen iPod (classic) via woot! and had no problems with it (though the serial number was apparently supposed to be matched up to a black-colored one, while my iPod was white). I've also bought a refurbed MacBook directly from Apple, back in 2006, and it's still going strong. I've had many more problems with Invicta watches, which weren't even refurbed (one through woot! and one through another deal site).

Finally, THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS AN "ITOUCH"! It's iPod touch--nowhere in any official materials is the iPod touch ever referred to in that way. That misnomer came about simply as a mistaken way of referring to the device, using the same convention as the "iPhone." However, it's not correct! Such a device does not exist!

I don't know what "Current Generation" means. Current Generation is 3rd Generation. There is NO 8GB 3rd Gen Touch. Look at the Apple Store Touch overview page, iTouch Comparison. The 8GB Touch is listed, but note that ONLY the 32GB and 64GB say "3rd Generation" under the storage amount. Having owned both 2nd Generation and 3rd Generation iPod Touches, I can say that the 3rd Generation is DEFINITELY worth it. With 3rd Gen you get a processor which is twice as fast (and even at twice as fast, it is only acceptable - for me 2nd gen was too slow), battery life which seems a little better than 2nd Gen, and Voice Command/Voice input, which gives me the capability to use Skype to call anywhere in the world with my 3rd Gen Touch and Sprint MiFi card. Add to those major differences quadruple storage (8 vs. 32GB), and you get so much more.

On the Apple site, it is only $14 more, and the warranty is from Apple for one year, as opposed to a 90 day Woot warranty. I might buy this one from Apple!

Oops! At checkout, Apple adds another $11.55 tax. The total savings with Woot $25.54 - but shorter warranty.

Fun description. And when you go to drop that dry ice in your metal container holding the tea and bloodstained letter from the future, and then you close it up, you might want to bury it real quick like, before the BBOOOOOOOOMMMMMM happens in your hand. Maybe in less than 5 seconds... It's this little thing called pressure. Gets kind of explosive.

Just sayin'
