I know this is a little more than $10 cheaper than the refurbished 8GB ipod touch on the Apple website, but doesn't the one from Apple come with a better warranty. Going to buy one or the other, just trying to decide which is the better deal.

We have one of these, and one of the new 32g models. I haven't noticed a performance difference between the two. I've been really happy with both.

To put this thing's performance into perspective, this Ipod touch has surprisingly comparable voice service signal strength to a 4G Iphone being held at the bottom. Not too shabby on a device without phone capabilities.

thanks WOOT!!

Concur... In for one.

Was trending toward the Apple refurb until the tax difference came up. This should be great for my (soon to be) 9 yr old's birthday. She's continually smeagol-ing after her brother's iPod touch.

And if it does not work out, it seems eBay-ability makes this virtually a no-lose investment!

With the easy to find 20% off coupon code for Square Trade. The refurbished ipod from woot with the extended warranty is still cheaper than what you're getting from apple directly. Decided to buy from woot.

Too bad I just bought a Refurb 16GB Zune for $122.

For the price, it might be worth getting this too for direct comparison.

Yeah I hate figuratively downloading books.

A device with this small a screen doesn't make for a good reading experience. I have a smartphone with similar screen and use the aikido e-book app. Sure it works in a pinch if I have nothing else to use, but I wouldn't call it enjoyable by any stretch of the imagination.

Anyway, this is a better deal than from Apple themselves. Check it out: http://store.apple.com/us/product/FC086?mco=MTM3NzY1NzA

That's the refurb from Apple, so it's a direct comparison.

Also keep in mind that they usually release an updated version of the iPod touch in early September.

Here are some sites that tell what it can and can't do, with "how to" links.

iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Supported Bluetooth profiles

About Bluetooth in iPod Touch

Does Apple's iPod touch have Bluetooth?

and a YouTube video (warning - it's somewhat annoying to get though)

10 minutes is verrrry long for a non-Box of Crap order. But then again, Woot did some server maintenance and everything is slow today. If it still hasn't gone through, you might try emailing them for help.

Ouch! I just lost my itouch to a pool, but sadly the 8GB won't hold all my crap. I'd have jumped on this right away if it was a larger model. Dang it. Well maybe I shouldn't be so picky.

There aren't any fees as long as you're not using premium WiFi hotspots (ie. McDonald's). But that isn't iPod Touch specific and applies to any WiFi device. MobileMe is a premium (a.k.a. not free) service provided by Apple to sync your data between Apple devices.

Agree. I have had mine for 18 months now and have never paid for any wifi fee. In fact other the original 2 to 3 OS jump 18 months ago which was 15 bucks. All that I have paid for using my touch are paid apps. The great most apps have a freebie trail app so you can check it out before you pay for the full blown version.

As for the question above about the size. Sure bigger is always nice (that's what she said). I have the 8 gb 2gen touch and other than some time having to dump an album to hear another, I have had little issue as for the size or the speed rating of the processor.

Uh, no - but Apple's marketing folks are pumping their fists in victory. Their confusing "3rd generation" campaign blurred the hardware lines and sadly misled a lot of folks.

The 8GB iPod Touch got left out of the hardware upgrades; it has the same guts as the older 2nd generation. Only the larger 32GB and 64GB 3rd gen siblings got new hardware.

CNET's iOS4 chart give the details on what's in and what's out (no multitaksing or BT keyboards here). Apple says "Not all features [of iOS4] are compatible with all devices. For example, multitasking, custom wallpaper, and Bluetooth keyboard support are available only with iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and the third-generation iPod touch (32GB and 64GB models from late 2009)".

Whatever happens, it sounds like your daughter will be getting one . You can get another one by creating a new Woot! account using a separate email address and credit card (btw, this is also a good way to convince Woot! to ship to separate addresses).

Until today I was perfectly happy NOT having an MP3 player, secure in my knowledge that, for me, it would be a waste of money...

And now, after reading all of these posts, especially yours, I find myself yearning for, no...craving for, an iPod Touch...

So PLEASE, just STOP IT and let me wallow in my ignorance of what I am missing!!

hey bro.. every day when i get home, I sync my ipod touch or ipad, go out into my garden (yes, i'm avid), plug my iDevice into my powered outdoor speakers, and listen to PTI and Around The Horn everyday..

I feel the ESPN love bro, and theres's literally buttloads of ESPN podcasts. Time to bring you into the now. :-)

KeplerNiko wrote:Some quick input:

This "3rd" generation iPod is 3rd generation insofar as it's the exact same hardware (more or less) that was previously sold as a 2nd-gen iPod touch, prior to the release of the 3rd-gen iPod touches that are capable of multitasking and doing all of the fancy new iOS4 features.

The hardware of this "3rd" gen iPod touch is otherwise the same, so it can't do any more than any other 2nd gen iPod touch with iOS4 can do.

It's currently only the *larger* capacity 3rd gen iPod touches that have the newer hardware and support multitasking and the custom wallpapers.

Next, my experience with refurbs (Apple products) has been positive. I got a refurbed 30GB 5.5-gen iPod (classic) via woot! and had no problems with it (though the serial number was apparently supposed to be matched up to a black-colored one, while my iPod was white). I've also bought a refurbed MacBook directly from Apple, back in 2006, and it's still going strong. I've had many more problems with Invicta watches, which weren't even refurbed (one through woot! and one through another deal site).

Finally, THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS AN "ITOUCH"! It's iPod touch--nowhere in any official materials is the iPod touch ever referred to in that way. That misnomer came about simply as a mistaken way of referring to the device, using the same convention as the "iPhone." However, it's not correct! Such a device does not exist!

Actually iTouch was never used because Logitech has a patent for the name. I know, because it's the software that came with my keyboard :P

If you want to buy a SquareTrade, also be sure to google-search for some coupon codes. Sometimes you can get as much as 30% off the listed price, and up to 20% off for an eBay item. I bought one for my old iPod video, and it helped me when it just suddenly died - they replaced whatever was broken door-to-door in about 4-5 days. However, I have noticed that their current prices have SOARED since 1-2 years ago and are literally about 4x the cost of what the used to be.
